Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

Current vote leaders at this writing (all that have 2,000 or more votes):

Corban Knight, North Dakota, Senior, Forward 16,095 votes
Johnny Gaudreau, Boston College, Sophomore, Forward 13,053 votes
Frank Slubowski, Western Michigan, Sophomore, Goalie 4,642 votes
Mike Seidel, Minnesota-Duluth, Senior, Forward 3,203 votes
Greg Miller, Cornell, Senior, Forward 2,919 votes
Ryan Walters, Nebraska-Omaha, Junior, Forward 2,878 votes
Drew LeBlanc, St. Cloud State, Senior, Forward 2,254 votes
Eric Hartzell, Quinnipiac, Senior, Goalie 2,002 votes

These goofy "standings" are an advertisement for why I don't think the fans should be involved in the voting since the fans’ vote accounts for a full 1 percent of the total ballot in each phase of selecting the actual award recipient. If they can't do better than this, it shouldn't be allowed to count at all, although 1% isn't enough of a factor to corrupt the process.

Frank Slubowski? He's only the 4th ranked goalie in his own conference. Mike Seidel? Ranked 36th in the country in scoring? A plus/minus of +1 for the season? Greg Miller? 16 total points on the season for a .500 team? He's not even in the top 50 in the country in scoring. Even if you are a fan of one of these player's teams I don't see how anybody in good conscience could cast a vote for any of those 3 guys. Anybody reading this thread can easily come up with at least a dozen more deserving players than these 3.

All the other players at least deserve a place on this leaderboard although perhaps not necessarily in this order.

The interesting thing about this list is that I can make a way better case for the bottom three players on it, maybe, than I can for the top 3 (really, the top 2 since Slubowski shouldn't be anywhere near 3rd).

My partisan viewpoint as far as Walters is concerned is this. Here we have the leading scorer in the nation, who plays on the top scoring line in the nation, playing for the WCHA's 2nd place team, a team that has a realistic shot at the MacNaughton Cup, all while doing this on a team picked either 7th or 8th preseason in the conference depending on whether you were asking the coaches or the writers. And, that team is currently the #3 offense in the country and has been in the top 3 every week since before Thanksgiving.

That's some pretty big scoreboard, as Romey would say.

As an aside, USCHO has written stories in the last week pontificating on the Hobey chances of Minnesota's Nick Bjugstad as well as Brett Gensler of Bentley, neither of whom have a snowball's chance in hell of winning it. Not even their own homer fans think so. Gensler has 140 total votes and Bjugstad has all of 106.

Of the names above. I'd have Walters, LeBlanc, Hartzell, & Gaudreau all tied at 1A's and Knight a close second to that pack. You can make great cases for any of my top 4.

What's everybody's top 5 or so, right now?
If Minnesota had the powers of the Swami and had the foresight to nominate Wilcox - It would be a very close race between him and Gaudreau. But of those who were nominated without a doubt it should be Gaudreau.

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

I'm going based on what I've seen. I've watched Minnesota 5-6 times this season, and Bjugstad has been the strongest player for Minnesota in those games. I don't know how Budish is on the second line, but he's probably been the second best. Wilcox has been strong as well. Plus, a lot of what Bjugstad does doesn't show up on the scoresheet. I just really enjoy watching him play whenever I watch the Gophers.

That being said, I'll defer to your knowledge of the team, and move him out of my top 10. Move up Danny Kristo to the top 5 and add Mike Collins to the next 5.
Bjugs at this point has a better chance of scoring with Lindsey Lohan than finding the back of the net. Very disappointing year goals wise for him.

He's on pace for about 20-25 goals. I'm not sure what you were expecting, but to expect a player to score more than that is unrealistic...even if he scored 25 last season.

I do wonder why he doesn't play a role more like Budish and try to score more on rebounds and the like. He has the size and power to be a force there. Or perhaps he does and I just seemed to miss those games.

I don't think it would be that close. Wilcox would probably be Top 10 though. I don't know why Minnesota didn't nominate him, as he's played very well all year.

Oh, it should also be noted that fan voting means next to nothing for the Hobey.

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

Leading scorer in the nation. Johnny Gaudreau. 1.63 PPG.

Can't argue with this one at all. Thing is, is that something voters will take note of when evaluating these guys?

I don't think Walters can win UNLESS UNO wins the the WCHA, plus, he'd still have to be "leading" the nation in scoring, still, too.

edit: this is now 1.50 Walters and 1.55 Gaudreau as of tonight.

If Nate Schmidt keeps going the way he has lately, he is an attractive dark horse pick.

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

I've only seen him play in person once, but seen some footage and talked to people; whenever Gaudreau is on the ice, BC is a different team. His impact could also be noted from when he was absent, playing at the World Juniors, as BC's play was - I'm quoting a friend who watches them - more lackluster.

CBS Sports blogger Chris Peters, who does their "Hobey Baker Award Watch" each week has been changing his mind about who is in the top 4 like he has multiple personality disorder or something. Dropping guys on and off the list for no real discernible reason. "Showcasing" guys on his list, he says, because they haven't been in the top 4 before? Really? C'mon, you either deserve the award or you don't.

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

Jensen is a solid two-way player and would be an excellent candidate. IMO better than Dowd. But when voters can't watch games its about numbers and Jensen has very good numbers but not Hobey numbers. Same with B-Jugs, their intangibles don't show up very well.

That's why I think Hanowski has a shot. He is a goal scorer, scored 3 of the 5 at UND this weekend, reminded me when we were outscored 5 to 3 last year over the weekend against the Gophers, he had all 3 plus the first two in Wisconsin the next weekend. If he can get on a role he can have a chance. Sorry to say his goals are sexier than LeBlanc's assists

That's not the purpose he is writing it for! This isn't the Heisman debate, he is doing write ups for players across the country that we should learn more about and I am shocked you can find a way to badmouth that

Chris Peters is about as good as it gets for hockey coverage in the US. You need to take your meds and relax - chances are your favorite player (what's his name at UNO) isn't going to win the Hobey.

The only way he wins it is if UNO wins the conference and he is still leading the nation in scoring at season's end, the larger the margin, the better. Even then, I am not so sure. If SCSU wins the MacNaughton (which I think they are going to do), and LeBlanc can stick a few more pucks in the net along the way to them doing that, I think he has a real shot at winning it.

No offense to Chris because I like his work, but no way. Not by a mile.

Best hockey writer in the US in my opinion is Michael Russo. That can be debated, but whether Russo is more knowledgable about hockey and more talented at writing cannot be IMO.

If you want to say "best coverage of USA Hockey and the NTDP", you have an argument. But not many people cover that niche of the sport. But as far as hockey in the US in general, no way.

And again, not an insult to Chris. I like his work.

Re: Hobey Baker Award and the fan voting

"about as good as it gets" and "as good as it gets" aren't the same thing. this peters guy can be "about as good as it gets". that allows for someone like the guy you mentioned to be better.

I don't think Chris is even in the discussion of best. Hence the, "not by a mile" comment.

He covers a niche of hockey that didn't get much coverage before, and does a great job at it. For that I am grateful. But he isn't nearly as knowledgable or connected as many other writers out there. Russo only being one of many. I'd also list Brad Schlossman, Andy Baggott, among others who have covered college hockey or the NHL a long time.

No it can't... he covers hockey in the state of Minnesota. All those guys who cover hockey in other states, have the nerve to take attention away from MN! Can you believe the nerve?!?

I agree and FWIW that is what I meant. Whatever, as long as we establish he knows more than this butthurt UNO fan who thinks his favorite UNO player should be inducted into the HHOF in Toronto I'm fine with whatever corrections anyone else may have. :D

I can get on board with that :D
