Re: Headline News Thread

It would have been fine. They have earthmovers on it right now.

Gotcha. And if they get this done in a week, I'll be impressed. Parise help you tomorrow with this weather. It's whiteout where I am, can't imagine the ZOMG WEATHER drivers during rush hour.

@dwallacewells: NBC news in LA is reporting that the wildfires are now burning down Rupert Murdoch's house.

Re: Headline News Thread

It was a new type of train coming from a new terminal.

From the coverage:

The derailed train is Amtrak 501, which is on its first day of early service and left Tacoma moments before the accident.

At 7:57 a.m., Sound Transit tweeted a photo of the train and said, “New @amtrakcascades neighbor looking (thumbs up) on the first day of service from new Tacoma Dome Station.” The tweet has since been deleted.

Big news story in Politico: https://www.politico.eu/article/obama-hezbollah-the-secret-backstory-of-how-let-off-the-hook/

Obama administration overrides a DEA investigation of $1 billion (yes, billion) drug ring run by Hezbollah in order to appease Iran.

One Obama-era Treasury official, Katherine Bauer, in little-noticed written testimony presented last February to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, acknowledged that “under the Obama administration … these [Hezbollah-related] investigations were tamped down for fear of rocking the boat with Iran and jeopardizing the nuclear deal.”

One thing to keep in mind is that the problem isn’t completely with Amtrak. The rails are owned by freight rail companies. The government has also continuously pushed out the deadlines for PTC for these companies time and time again. Amtrak obviously doesn’t have the capital to build these systems.

So I still point the blame firmly at the government and the freight companies.

Just another reason why this country is dying.

Of course - a Democrat did that, therefore it's "appeasement". If a Republican had done it, you'd be calling it "negotiations" or "a tough diplomatic choice".

Nice try, Mr. BSABSVR.

Re: Headline News Thread

X Files, for real.

WASHINGTON — In the $600 billion annual Defense Department budgets, the $22 million spent on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was almost impossible to find.

Which was how the Pentagon wanted it.

For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, deep within the building’s maze.

The Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the program, which it says it shut down in 2012. But its backers say that, while the Pentagon ended funding for the effort at that time, the program remains in existence. For the past five years, they say, officials with the program have continued to investigate episodes brought to them by service members, while also carrying out their other Defense Department duties.

The shadowy program — parts of it remain classified — began in 2007, and initially it was largely funded at the request of Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who was the Senate majority leader at the time and who has long had an interest in space phenomena. Most of the money went to an aerospace research company run by a billionaire entrepreneur and longtime friend of Mr. Reid’s, Robert Bigelow, who is currently working with NASA to produce expandable craft for humans to use in space.
