HE Championship Game, Maine Vs BC

Re: HE Championship Game, Maine Vs BC

OK - so it wasn"t just me asking my television set "What in the hell is the ref doing THERE?!".

I don't think the refs tilted the outcome - BC won that game. However, I agree with many that the officating in the HE final four was an embarrasment to the league.

No, he's absolutely correct. Not saying it changed the outcome of the game, but Brian Flynn had the puck on his stick point-blank just to the right of Milner and not 10 feet from the net. He had top right post wide open, but he hesitated because Bunyon was blocking the goal and then by the time he shot, Milner was over at the post to make the save. Why a referee in that situation would be in FRONT of the goal line at all is beyond me...especially when you have two referees...

When was that? I have it on DVR and didn't see it the first time

Just watched it

First it was officer Bennedetto not Bunyon and Flynn had the entire effing net to shoot at

Well, it may have looked to YOU as though he had the entire net to shoot at, but you can't see the angle on TV. Obviously he was distracted because he hesitated. I'm not arguing about the outcome of the game - no way BC was losing that game - the point is that the official was out of position. You CAN'T be there when you are essentially blocking the line of sight of a player about to shoot.

I didn't DVR it so I can't go back and check it so I'll take your word on which of the two was blocking the open net. But it was definitely the shot that Flynn had to hesitate on and by the time he finally let it go, Milner had slid over. HEA referees tend to free-lance a lot on positioning since few if any of them have come up through the USA Hockey referee development program, which has done a good job with standardizing things like mechanics and positioning.

However, the (non) elbowing call on Whitney with about three minutes left is totally on Bunyon. Not only was no elbow ever thrown, it was a textbook perfect backchecking move in which Whitney used his speed to gain inside position on the puck carrier and bodied him out of the play. Absolutely, totally 100% legal. I've seen him make similar marginal or outright imaginary calls late in games when the outcome is still up for grabs.

Re: HE Championship Game, Maine Vs BC

I was at one of those 'wear-something-green' parties last night so I had the game on DVR. Started watching once I got home around 11:30.

Whenever I saw that 3rd goal, all I could say was, 'Holy F___,' and I NEVER swear. That was a goal I could (and did) watch a dozen times.

Yeah, that was one impressive pass. Johnny Gaudreau might be the best freshman I have seen at BC (along with Brian Dumoulin), since the 2000-01 season (both Chuck Kobasew and Ben Eaves).

Re: HE Championship Game, Maine Vs BC

as usual, Hockey East is BC and then everyone else. Clearly the better team last night.

I don't expect Maine to make it out of their NCAA bracket, even with Abbott back. I don't think Sullivan is reliable enough and Maine relies too much on their top line.

Re: HE Championship Game, Maine Vs BC

Congrats to BC, its pretty obvious who the better team is. The class of HE is once again Champs, seems to be a pattern going on here:). Hope Maine gets a good seed int he NCAAs, hopefully in the east and in Unions bracket:D

I think BU & Maine knocked themselves out silly in the late game and the winner had to play a well rested BC team. Plus BU knocked out one of your better players on your top line.

Again in the regional, you guys will play the late game against the tougher opponent.
