One exhibition game doth not a season make, but it was refreshing to see the 8 new faces buzzing around the rink last Friday and generating lots of scoring.
Let's hope that things come together in an interesting way this season.

No predictions on the lines and pairings for this week's Dmth game since a number of older players didn't suit up for the McGill match, but you might want to keep Gilmore and Jovanovich together.

Trivia Q-and-A: what is the nickname of Jovanovich's freshman cousin on the H men's BB team?

BTW, keep checking out NESN, which will televise a number of non-Ivy away games this year that ILDN won't cover.

Four take-aways from the Dartmouth game:


1. Neo-Grunge, Camo, Faux SEAL/SWAT - - - call it what you will - - - the new uniform is horrific. Looks like the team spilled out of a Humvee, not the locker room. Pure visual noise.

2. To identify an undergraduate player as the “property” of a professional team is ominous. This isn’t UNC bounceyball.

3. This is going to be an exciting, winning season.

4. The return of good hockey is going to unscramble a few brains and lead to the return of good taste.

1. Has any other team in any sport ever worn camo uniforms before? Utterly, unutterably, bizarre idea.....

2. Especially when the ostensibly "professional" property owner hasn't made a regular practice of paying its players. Note too that some players have been drafted by more than one team and therefore appear to have more than one "owner"

3. Interesting roster tonight. All 8 freshmen played. With Tse now playing wing, they seemed to use only 5 on defense. Dressing one short of the max number of skaters, you have to assume the other roster players are injured. Unlike most past seasons, all four lines played. And like the Frozen Four season, the top three lines appear to be pretty interchangeable, as the nominal third line included two of tonight's goal scorers, Laing and Hughes.

1. Norwich D3 hockey does....but they are the Cadets, kinda fits with the school's military background

The San Diego Padres wear camo uniforms for Sunday home games.

The Padres will continue the tradition of wearing camouflage jerseys for military appreciation during Sunday home games. Cassavell writes that Marine camouflage will take precedence over Navy camouflage in 2017, noting that the Navy camouflage "will likely be worn twice -- on Navy Appreciation Day and one other Sunday."

Gratifying game tonight on the road...all 3 goals scored by freshmen, 20 shots in the first period

Pretty much the same lineup tonight, still going with 5 defenders, 3 of them freshmen, 3 balanced lines with the 4th line getting the initial goal

The Reverse of the Medal

Yesterday's game was a mirror image of Friday's...everything in reverse...in both cases a much closer score than the run of play would have suggested, but with the teams reversed...the Harvard power play units that had dominated the sagging Tiger defense completely disrupted by Q's aggressive 'killers...

One pronounced disparity between H and Q was that, although H players had plenty of grit battling for 50-50 pucks along the boards, Q was picking up most of the loose pucks in open ice and immediately converting them into effective transition whereas the H players appear to need more time playing together to have a better sense of where teammates are and which way they're heading. Hope that practice will tend to make better, if not perfect.

A couple of H players had thoroughly bad outings and the character test for them will be whether they can leave that behind and quickly bounce back. Larcomb, though, has been consistently good throughout the young season.

Just about to post when I saw this. Agree on all but “Q’s aggressive ‘killing.” Hard to say.

A mixed weekend for Harvard. I think the team spent so much time back on their heels against Q because of the pace and intensity of the Tigers game, and this was the team’s (freshmen’s) first 6pm/3pm turnaround (though that didn’t bother Q). Physical conditioning is one thing, mental another. But it’s got to be tough for all concerned, especially early season. (Am I right in thinking only the ECAC uniformly has this less than 24-hour second game schedule?)

Who knew Q’s first goal was 5-on-3 until it happened? Announcer guy completely missed that second penalty. Who, what, when? And how many people watching the game need to be told incessantly what the score is, to say nothing of being told there is no score after 3 minutes of play, breathlessly, as if this were a roundball game? Also, absent other analytical remarks, what makes for a particular “fantastic” PK rather than the PP being dreadful? (Is this lackadaisical play-by-play and zilch color-person thing also peculiar to the ECAC?)

Perhaps it’s unfair to comment from the distance of screen viewing, but what I choose to call Blackbeard’s Lament (too many “thoughtless, uninspiring shots”) is never far from mind when watching one’s team lose. Is this part of conditioning too? But this is an exciting bunch. (Where’s Dani Krzyszczyk, btw?)

It was nice to see a return to sanity with the road uniforms. Apparently Harvard wants to play incognito only when they’re at home. :)

What did this young team learn last weekend? Well, 5-0 against Brown can become 5-3 in 3 minutes, given two 5x3s, and Yale can score an EAG at 18:56 for the tie. Hockey happens. Larcom keeps her cool.

They came off a bye week with some line tweaks, and were able to add a healthy, scoring Danny Kaye ;) Peper’s back also, but they’re still absent Warner and, critically, Heffernan. It would be nice to be at full strength when they take off the training wheels after this weekend with Holy Cross. BC lies in wait.

(Btw, the camo outfits were apparently sent back to Parris Island before the Yale game. Mercifully.)

A telling degree of new openness and candor this season from the HC of the HC, methinks. Not really striking for most, probably, but just newish, at least from Bright. (Almost like: ‘Dammit, we blew a four point weekend!’) This is no doubt standard (and tame) for the WCHA. But you can tell she thinks she’s got some horses, and she’s going to bring them along for a Derby run in the next year or two.
