Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Complete game changer that might ruin the postseason for QU, major PWR points lost tonight at Harvard. I was watching the game on ILDN when it happened, not sure if he was arguing the officiating or the review of the powerplay goal that had just taken place? As the Ref was skating away, Rand said something that was the last straw and was bounced. The game was 2-1 Harvard at that point and quite competitive.

I was at the game sitting on the Harvard side directly opposite the Bobcats bench. Initially Pecknold was arguing calmly and his beef was that Krushko kicked the puck into the net. The replay showed the puck bouncing off Truell, sliding off Nathan's skate which was going towards the post but not in a kicking manner. Pecknold couldn't or wouldn't stop so the ref bounced him. It completely changed the tenor of the game and the Bobcats became unglued and starting taking stupid penalties and losing focus.

The numerous video replays on ILDN also showed a stopping motion, no kick, it was ironic that they reviewed it after he had been thrown out.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

For one period, tonight's game was an up and down affair with both teams getting good chances (Harvard had a few too many breakdowns at their blue line that let Bobcat forwards in all alone or at least unimpeded with numbers on their side. Then came the second period and all heck broke loose. As has already been commented on by posters, Rand Pecknold lost his cool after Nathan Krushko put the Crimson up 2-1. Pecknold, as I noted earlier, claimed that Krushko kicked the puck into the net. Replays showed otherwise and the game devolved from there. The refs lost control, chippiness went up and it became more like a tractor pull than a hockey game.

Harvard needs to show better discipline and focus although I will give them credit for cleaning up their defensive lapses in the first period and keeping the Bobcats away from Madsen (he played a great game BTW - two in a row for him). Krushko is starting to emerge as an offensive force and I would put him on the third line with Pelton-Byce and Lloyd. Kid has no fear in the corners.

The officiating by far tonight was the worst I've seen since the Pierre Belanger days. You remember him don't you? He'd call five penalties in a row on one team, then reverse course and call five or six straight on the other team. Billy used to tell me his hair loss was a direct result of Pierre's officiating. I actually think they liked each other.

Adam Fox played a regular shift but you could tell he had tired legs. The third period didn't help him especially when Sherman and Baughman went off for consecutive penalties. Hope he plays tomorrow night but I would not be surprised if Teddy gave him the night off.

The Bobcats play a disciplined style and are a dangerous team albeit not as skilled as last year's team. They will be a tough out in the playoffs but I get what people are saying about the PWR and their chances of going to the tournament. Tonight didn't help them but last week's win over BC had to help.

Oh well, bring on the snow and the Tigers.

I think the assistant coach or Clifton asked for the review. Not sure but at that point, they had nothing to lose. Clifton by the way didn't show much leadership taking an absolutely stupid penalty giving Harvard a two man up whereupon we opened up the 4-1 lead. The kid has to show more composure.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

It's bigger for Quinnipiac than it is for Harvard. Trust me. Harvard is an NCAA tournament lock barring a major second half collapse. Quinnipiac needs to this game more than Harvard does for its pairwise implications.

You guys beat BC last week. That has to help. I get that you are on the bubble but there is still a long way to go.

The long way to go is for you guys.........only because of your late start. Teams like Quinnipiac and my Saints only have 13 games left after tonight and all within the league. So the only good opportunities now for PWR are to knock off teams above you within the league. Not many of those opportunities left.

For Quinnipiac not many at all. Union and Cornell and thats it. For Saint Lawrence they have Union, Harvard and Cornell twice but they can't afford any slip ups.

I don't follow. We don't have any out of conference games left except the Beanpot. And we're #4 in the country. How is it a long way to go? Our schedule is what it is. All the Ivies start late - nothing new there.

Other than Union, the league doesn't offer us any opportunities to move up. If anything, we're in danger of moving down if we slip up against weaker teams.

How many league games will Harvard really lose down the stretch? I be shocked if they lost any more than 2-3 at the most and they have the talent and confidence right now to win out in the league regular season.

We still have to play at Yale and Cornell and those won't be easy games. Nor will the game at Union next weekend. Like many of the conferences, it isn't easy to win on the road. Fortunately our February schedule aside from the Beanpot is mostly at Bright Landry. That helps.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Given the weather, I'm taking a pass at going to BL tonight. The game is on ESPN3 so if you have the WatchESPN app, you're good to go. Surprised actually that the game is still on as the height of the storm is hitting us now through 10pm tonight.

Ref took game away from players on both sides last night. At this point in season should never be that many whistles or penalties. Hockey needs to play. Rand had every right to ask for review. Harvard PP deadly. Paul Pearl has done great job to tighten it up this year. Fun game when 5 on 5 to watch....but 1 ref took away 2nd period. Good luck to Harvard iwhen you get man up....deadly! Fun to watch

Of course he can ask for the review. But berating an official to the point where you get kicked out does not help your team. I agree that the officials lost control of the game and that's a shame because both teams deserved better. Officiating in the ECAC has gone downhill in the last ten or so years.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Last night's game had the feel of last season's RPI game at Bright where we poured 55 shots on Kasdorf and lost. We had our chances to put this game away early but we let Princeton hang around way too long. Should not have come down to the empty net goals. Except for the final score, this was disappointing any way you look at it. Might have been some hangover from the previous night.

That said, we got the four points and in the end, that's all that matters. I don't know how Fox made it through this weekend. He's going to need some major rest this week. Hope that Teddy gives him a break during practices this week. Kid is a stud.

If I am the Calgary Flames I would do everything in my power to make Adam Fox a one and done.

It does if you're making a valid argument AND trying to inspire your team. I'm not condoning what Pecknold did, and in this case it didn't work. But I do think at that moment he was trying to rally the troops.

It was only one official that let game get out of control. Pecknold forced to take time out in order to grant review....makes no sense...McDonald must have received coal in his stocking for Christmas. He continued to blow whistle on both sides all night. Teams never had chance to play hockey. When they did it was fun to watch. The difference in this one was the Harvard PP....impressive...Paul Pearl good addition to bench. Harvard should get deep in playoffs and hope they win Beanpot. BU is loaded with talent

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Why? Not even close to NHL ready and he is in perfect spot for his development

Agreed. Given size, likely to be a 3 year and maybe a 4 year player. Fox was made for college hockey. Future potential hobey baker player, just like Mark Fusco back in the early 80s.

If Fox maintains his current trajectory this year, he will certainly be freshman of the year and likely 1st Team All ECAC....unless the homer media decides to gift it to an upperclassmen. No D has better numbers than Fox this far in the ECAC.
