Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

I think Vesey has a temper and can lose control. He took some liberties against SLU that I thought could have been called. He is extremely talented and his play sometimes shows severe frustration. He's not an angel.

He's a hockey player, not a gymnast.

That said, the amount of liberties that other teams are taking with him are part of this. He is the 'marked' guy for Harvard and teams are doing all they can to disrupt him and get him off his game...much of which is after the whistle and behind the play.

The same could be said of Hughes during the QU game. Many better players play with an edge and they feed off of it, or it gets the better of them, and sometimes they become a target because of it.

Bingo. Look, every great player takes some form of abuse. Laney and Scotty took their fair share of hits - hell, Denver deliberately went after Scotty in the NCAA semis in Providence in '86 - a knee on knee hit and he was definitely targeted. No two ways about it. Teams will try and push the limit of what they can get away with to goad the player into a penalty or try and hurt them.

This is where Kevan Melrose was so valuable to the team in '89. If you tried to get under the skin of our skilled players, Kevan would make sure your team's stars paid the price.

Not according to Mr. Law and Order Coach Bill Cleary. Bill vocally and repeatedly said there is no room in college hockey for an enforcer. He even said that the same night Kevan Melrose severely injured an SLU player on a vile cheapshot. Probably one of the most scary plays I have seen in college hockey. That player was all of 5'9" and 180 lbs, and 1989 ECAC Tournament MVP.

My comments about Vesey are that he doesn't let up on plays, even after the whistle, and on two occasions in the last game instigated contact with our goalie which, generally, is going to elicit a response. Lane was a Lady Bing candidate with his play. Vesey will never be that. Again, he is a fantastic player and gives every coach in the league a heart attack almost every shift, but he is a bit of a **** stirrer and moreso than most big time scorers in college hockey.

PS I agree he is targeted but I also believe you can't focus on one player when you got 4 other guys on the ice that are almost as dangerous.

Totally different type of player. Hughes is a grinder. Vesey is not. Hughes is a captain and looks after his team as well. I would never call Hughes an angel either. But I am **** glad he is a Saint.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Here's hoping by the end of this weekend, Harvard earned more points from the North Country than Dartmouth did and 3+ points plus would be the most preferable situation but that's going to be tough.

Vesey is 7th in PIM for Harvard with 13. Other than the 5 min major against Cornell he has 4 penalties in 24 games. Hardly a goon.

I agree that Billy hated the dirty physical stuff (one only need remember the '85 playoffs when Brad Kwong went at it with a Colgate player and Billy immediately jumped off the bench and pointed to his team to stay put). But even he would have to admit that one of the big reasons his teams made it to the Frozen Four championship game was the presence of a physical defender (in '83, it was Neil Sheehy, in '86 it was Jerry Pawloski and of course Melrose in '89).

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

So this is cool...College Hockey News is now collecting advanced stats. It's not Corsi/Fenwick because playing time is such a bear to monitor in college hockey but it is shot attempts and PDO. http://www.collegehockeynews.com/stats/team/Harvard/22/advanced,20142015

Two things I learned: 1) Harvard has been lucky thus far, although not to a crazy extent. 2) Vesey is a monster for this team. He accounts for over 10% of our total shot attempts.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

We really need a win, and we could really use St. Lawrence and RPI wins to go with it. The wheels have totally fallen off.

You can say that again. Almost like two different seasons. The first half was glorious with a style of play we haven't seen in years. Maybe decades. Then January comes and we morph into seasons past. Yeah, the injuries had something to do with it but I can't believe that McNally's loss could bring down the whole team. Not buying it.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

We are pulling for you guys the rest of the way...especially Monday which will be a big boost in PWR for you and us I would imagine.

Is it bad that I legitimately forgot we have to play BC on Monday? And coming off a trip up to the North Country. Sigh.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

I just looked at the standings and we are behind Colgate? We have beaten them twice this year. How is it we are behind them if we are tied in points and we won the head to head? What am I missing here?

You're not behind them, you own the tie breaker ... I am assuming they just organize it alphabetically unless someone goes in and corrects it, which they usually only do once the season is over and the final standings are finalized ...

This is the case.

FYI, The Big Red What has a much better standings page than the league site because it actually calculates tiebreakers. http://www.elynah.com/tbrw/2015/ecac.standings.shtml

And a really good playoff possibilities page. http://www.elynah.com/tbrw/2015/ecac.cgiframe.shtml The Sioux Sports one is good too, but it doesn't have the ECAC tiebreakers built in. http://siouxsports.com/hockey/whatif/index.php?confid=4

Of course this is all easier if Harvard just wins its two games. Also if there's a tie for fourth, Harvard wants it to either be between themselves and Colgate only, or between themselves, Colgate, Dartmouth, and Cornell.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Your destiny is in your hands ... two wins this weekend and you get a bye for the tournament.
