Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014
Talk about a badly needed win. The Crimson finally skated at near full health as only McNally and Blackwell were missing. If we ever get those two back for the playoffs....
Tonight's game was somewhat of an oddity in that if you look at the shot totals, you would think it was a very even game. Quite the contrary. Harvard had the better of the play and much better puck possession all night long. Our skating was great in the first period, okay to great the rest of the way. But Colgate really didn't offer much in the way of opposition as they spent a lot of the night chasing our forwards.
Sean Malone got things going when he skated over the Colgate line, fired a wrist shot that hit the back boards and bounced out to his stick whereupon he promptly fired a wrister past Hamilton, the Colgate goalie, from almost parallel to the goal line. It was one of the goal scorer's seeing eye specials. Moments later, Malone was at it again going down the right boards and slipping a pass to Luke Esposito who tipped it by Hamilton.
The second period saw more skating from Colgate and some flurries when they had a PP but nothing of consequence. With one tenth of a second remaining, Tyler Moy slammed home a beautiful goalmouth feed from Jimmy Vesey.
Phil Zielonka closed out the scoring for Harvard with a nice move down the wing cutting to the middle and firing a wrist shot that hit the crossbar and dropped behind Hamilton. Colgate scored on a PP midway through the third wrapping up the scoring.
Harvard had some glorious chances in this game. Malone could have had his second on a partial breakaway, Tyler Moy had the move of the season when he completely undressed a Colgate D and skated in front in a stuff attempt that Hamilton smothered in the crease. Moy had other chances as did Criscuolo and Zielonka.
Two observations. The Crimson at times appeared tentative not wanting to engage physically. There was something off about their play even though they dominated puck possession. It was strange - their jump wasn't there all the time and they tried to make the perfect pass instead of going to the net. I'm wondering if this losing streak has gotten to them mentally. Second, their D zone breakouts, while much better tonight, need work. As does the PP. They tried five forwards (Malone, Kerfoot, Vesey, Moy and Criscuolo) but instead of going to the net, they cycled and didn't really get any close in chances. Need a physical presence in front.
But heck, we won and that's what counts.
Bring on the Big Red. We owe them.
