Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

TIME CHANGE FOR CORNELL

A email just went to all season ticket holders that the Cornell game Saturday has been changed to 4:00PM due to the Blizzard warning.

Also, got an email this morning for a Parking Alert that due to snow and the athletic department being stupid enough to schedule a basketball game one hour before the hockey game that parking will be difficult but claims that parking will be guaranteed to holders of season parking passes. They still however have not installed signs for ADA spaces on the back end near the elevator for those of us who are a bit gimpy.
Going out the door now heading to Boston and hoping I do not have to turn around and drive home drive home having found no accessible parking.

(note: the Athletic dept email did not mention how stupid they were to schedule the conflict with basketball, I added that)

Did they also move up the time for Basketball? If not, the basketball fans will now arrive two hours after your start instead of 1 hour before. I am actually starting to feel for your team and your fans with all the rescheduling of this game and the Beanpot games.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

All forwards back. Lines looking good. Still no McNally but this is as good as it is going to get for harvard on the health front.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

FYI, some tickets have opened up for tomorrow's Cornell game. We just grabbed a pair behind the Crimson bench. Let's hope the T keeps running long enough for us to get home.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Talk about a badly needed win. The Crimson finally skated at near full health as only McNally and Blackwell were missing. If we ever get those two back for the playoffs....

Tonight's game was somewhat of an oddity in that if you look at the shot totals, you would think it was a very even game. Quite the contrary. Harvard had the better of the play and much better puck possession all night long. Our skating was great in the first period, okay to great the rest of the way. But Colgate really didn't offer much in the way of opposition as they spent a lot of the night chasing our forwards.

Sean Malone got things going when he skated over the Colgate line, fired a wrist shot that hit the back boards and bounced out to his stick whereupon he promptly fired a wrister past Hamilton, the Colgate goalie, from almost parallel to the goal line. It was one of the goal scorer's seeing eye specials. Moments later, Malone was at it again going down the right boards and slipping a pass to Luke Esposito who tipped it by Hamilton.

The second period saw more skating from Colgate and some flurries when they had a PP but nothing of consequence. With one tenth of a second remaining, Tyler Moy slammed home a beautiful goalmouth feed from Jimmy Vesey.

Phil Zielonka closed out the scoring for Harvard with a nice move down the wing cutting to the middle and firing a wrist shot that hit the crossbar and dropped behind Hamilton. Colgate scored on a PP midway through the third wrapping up the scoring.

Harvard had some glorious chances in this game. Malone could have had his second on a partial breakaway, Tyler Moy had the move of the season when he completely undressed a Colgate D and skated in front in a stuff attempt that Hamilton smothered in the crease. Moy had other chances as did Criscuolo and Zielonka.

Two observations. The Crimson at times appeared tentative not wanting to engage physically. There was something off about their play even though they dominated puck possession. It was strange - their jump wasn't there all the time and they tried to make the perfect pass instead of going to the net. I'm wondering if this losing streak has gotten to them mentally. Second, their D zone breakouts, while much better tonight, need work. As does the PP. They tried five forwards (Malone, Kerfoot, Vesey, Moy and Criscuolo) but instead of going to the net, they cycled and didn't really get any close in chances. Need a physical presence in front.

But heck, we won and that's what counts.

Bring on the Big Red. We owe them.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

The men's b-ball game has been moved up to 4pm starting at the same time as the hockey game. Parking is a disaster. The lot was full by 5:15 tonight and if you don't have a season's pass, you are out of luck. The MBTA is a roll of the dice at this point. Not sure if I'll go - the game is being televised by ESPN3 so I might just couch it. Wussy I know but wind chills are starting to bother me.

As Skate 79 mentioned, they decided to move up the basketball game to the same time as the hockey which will produce a similar problem to today for parking, I reall the Army term for a problem like this but will not use it in this forum as there may be ladies present.

The email from Harvard said they guaranteed parking for people with the season parking pass. It appears however that early in the evening they stopped checking passes and collecting money and at 6:20 anybody could drive right in.

I had received an email today from the Harvard disability office that there would finally be ADA signed spaces at the end where the new elevator is but there were no signs and no spaces there tonight. I finally got the very last ADA space at the front end away from the elevator and braved the stairs. Happily I did not fall. I should note that ADA requires that the ADA spaces be the spaces closest to the most accessible entrance. Harvard has them exactly at the opposite end from where they should be.

Sorry to whine about a problem that only a small number of hockey fans have to deal with. I love hockey but do not want to mess myself up more than I am now by falling down the stairs. Fore the Cornell game I may drive up and if there are no spaces safe for me turn around and drive home listening on WHRB.

You're not whining. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Harvard has not done a very good job of clearing spaces for people to park, much less navigate around the perimeter of the rink. As I was searching for parking last night, a bus almost backed into my car even though I honked my horn alerting him that I was directly behind him. Where he was attempting to go is beyond me. One of the event staffers who was supposed to be directing traffic was totally clueless as to what was going on.

I get that scheduling multiple events will occur from time to time but someone has to have the foresight to stagger them to allow for enough parking given the conditions. BC is doing it with their men's and women's hockey games today. Why can't we do it for b-ball and hockey?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Is SUNY Ithaca in town this afternoon?

Let's get 'EM boys!

Almost. We left a point out there. Thought for sure after Vesey's goal that we would close the deal. Cornell gets away with a lot of stuff and we were a bit undisciplined and ragged. But it was still there for the taking. Mentally, we don't look as sharp as we did earlier in the season. Our D zone breakouts aren't as crisp and our passing isn't as fluid as it should be. Team needs to right itself for next weekend's North Country trip if we have any hope of finishing in the top four.

We really miss McNally. No two ways about it.

Yes. Donato seemed pretty disappointed with the result given the play and also was upset that the refs allowed Cornell to turn the game into a wrestling match as opposed to allowing folks to skate. Cornell's style of play comes from the top so it is no shocker of how they try and play.

Still looking for a video that shows the infraction that resulted in Vesey's 5 minute major. Donato was very upset about the call and given Vesey's track record, surprised to see him get a 5 minute major. He just doesn't take too many penalties.

Was anyone there that can speak to the call? Did Vesey drill the Cornell player between the numbers or was it one of those situations where the Cornell player turned his back last second and put himself in the dangerous position as the soon to be hit was leveled?

Haven't seen a replay, but as I watched it live, I was shocked that Vesey would make such a silly, unnecessary play. He was standing alone in front of our crease, and then just skated hard below the goal line and drove the Cornell player right into the boards. I don't think the view I saw really showed whether the Cornell player turned or not, so maybe Vesey thought he could get there in time to get in a clean hit. Even if we give Vesey the benefit of the doubt on that, I was surprised that he'd give up the good position that he had to go down low and start banging along the boards when there were already a couple of Harvard players down there. Just struck me as an odd thing for a leading-goal-scorer-type to do, you know?

I think Vesey has a temper and can lose control. He took some liberties against SLU that I thought could have been called. He is extremely talented and his play sometimes shows severe frustration. He's not an angel.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Only caught the third period as I was at the bball game, but my wife was there for the first two periods and thought Harvard played better in those than in the third. I don't have a problem with Cornell's play; that is the way they've played for years, and although they can be chippy, they outworked Harvard in the third period and generally were the more aggressive team. Also, if they hadn't bought 75% of the tickets, the rink would have been a ghost town. So, thanks for coming, Cornell, it is always fun.

How so? I have yet to see him lose it despite getting knocked around by other teams. Cornell brings out this style of play because of their physicality. Just ask Quinnipiac how they feel about playing them. Sorry, I'm not seeing what you are seeing.
