Another aspect of lack of fan support.

Leaving Bright this evening after the Women's game (beat Colgate 2-0) I turned on WHRB to listen to the men, It turns out they were broadcasting a soccer game. This despite a commitment "to provide complete live coverage of the entire Harvard football and men's ice hockey seasons" according to their website. In addition to the this in the spring when playoff games sometimes occur on Saturday afternoons 'HRB broadcasts opera from New York City rather than a Harvard team in a playoff game.

I would love to know how the band decides when and where to appear. They seem to have totally abandoned hockey. The do add the the spirit at games, far more than the bad music played far too loud that now accompanies the games.

Since they couldn't afford to travel to last night's game, and so instead aired the "championship" for men's soccer, may I suggest: http://whrb.org/donate.html

I'm sure you can specify that your donation go to the WHRB Sports department. Please feel free to patronize the local businesses that air ads on WHRB too and let them know you heard about them during a WHRB hockey game - then maybe their ad revenue could go up. As for the Met Opera, well, WHRB makes about 3x more on the Met Opera ads than hockey ads, so that's a no brainer. And now with Ivy Digital, the athletic dept. no longer pays WHRB for the use of their feed because they are paying for pro broadcasters instead. And lastly, the college gives them no funds. So again, see link above :)


As for the game itself...Everson and McNally got the start. Michalek looked sharp until he tweaked something making a save in the 3rd. We gave up a shorthanded goal coming out of a 5 on 3 PP and we generally made it much closer than it needed to be. Princeton was big and physical but I thought lacking in skill.

A couple of non-conference games coming up, let's beat BC and UNH.

They couldn't travel to Princeton from Hamden, CT?? Since when? I get that the soccer game was huge and it was easier to use the equipment from the football game to broadcast the soccer game but I'm not buying the travel excuse. We had no such issues when I was doing games and we also got zero support from the University. I do understand the emergence of the Ivy Digital Network and I wonder how long it will be before they start to encroach on 'HRB's ability to broadcast games. I hope that never happens.

Good win Saturday night and hopefully with Everson and McNally back, we can start to get some stability back there. No question that Teddy is riding the frosh up front. Hope that it gets better every week.

Beating BC would make our season. Right up there with beating Cornell. Looking forward to the game.

I imagine they couldn't afford the hotel to stay in Hamden and travel to Princeton and it's not feasible to go back to Cambridge on Friday night and drive down Saturday. When I did it, I stayed at my house to cut the hotel cost out. We had a lot more east coasters so a lot of our travel costs were cut by staying with families. I also wonder at what point they switch to doing basketball over hockey - at this point, they might get more ad money for it. I do know they had some unexpected costs over the summer - there was an issue with the equipment that I'm still not sure has been resolved. I know for a while they were doing a lot of broadcasts over ethernet cables and not through phone lines and standard radio equipment. I imagine they are trying to budget to get back to doing the latter. I did tell them that for next year, if they are in a similar situation, I'd happily drive over and make a return to the airwaves.

For an example of how bad it's gotten - when I was an admin, they asked if I'd consider our crews not getting reimbursed for meals on road trips, when we were spending $10 between 2-3 people on McDonalds. I told them the only road trip we'd do again in that case was every two years for football at Yale because it wasn't worth driving 7 hours to Clarkson and have most of our costs come out of our pockets. Thankfully the issue was dropped, although we still paid out of our own pockets every now and then. Hell, they subsidized only a 1/3 of my parking costs and the only reason I had a car near campus was for driving to broadcasts. And I was a heavily subsidized financial aid student so that was a sacrifice for me.
And the dept.'s cash flow has gotten worse since then.

But enough insider stuff. I agree, we looked more stable defensively. A win over BC would be great, although if it comes in February in the late game, it would be even better. Shame that Kerfoot is out.

Michalek in net. Glad to hear Kerfoot is back. The Crimson early report of his injury was clearly inaccurate. No shock there.

This is definitely worse than I thought. When I did the games for 'HRB in the late seventies, I used my car as well for trips to Dartmouth, Brown and Yale. For Cornell, SLU, Clarkson and RPI, we rode the bus with the team. Coach was really great about that and he was so accommodating for us. We didn't play Union or Quinnipiac as neither school was D-1 at that time. Other games involved Providence, BC, BU and UNH as they were part of the ECAC back then. So we either rode the Green Line or used my car. I was never reimbursed either and gave up asking when the 'cry poor' from the admin got old. I was so passionate about doing the games that after a while, I didn't care. We rarely had back to back on weekends so there were no hotels to pay for. Meals came out of our pocket.

It's a shame that the University can't wake up and join the 21st century and support the radio station because it really deserves it. It is one of those extracurriculars that is so much fun and creates memories that last a lifetime. I know that basketball is all the rage within the University but hockey put us on the national map and in some respects, the international scene with our Olympians from the past. We have a proud history and it deserves first class support.

I will say, we've been the ones over the years that have not even asked about riding the bus. They leave so early on Thursdays that it was hard to justify how much class would be missed. I had to be creative with my schedule just to avoid missing too many Friday classes, so missing Thursday classes for long road trips would have been too much. We also would take Amtrak to games like Yale and Brown when I was there and we were lucky enough to have a good relationship with some of our road supporters that we could hitch a ride back, especially since the train usually wasn't running at the end of the game (at least in New Haven).

Last night was not a pretty game. Still some work to be done. At least it wasn't a conference game. Glad Kerfoot is back. I wonder if Girard's puck handling is better against speedy teams because he can help Harvard break out of the zone more easily. Either way, we were pinned back a lot of the game, especially in the 1st. 17 shots against to 3 taken!

A lot of coach speak from Donato in post-game, but he praised BC's skill, particularly "13." Also said he sees his team improving and likes the skill and compete level of his team this year.

The fact is that despite wins over UNH and BU in the past few years, Harvard just can't compete with Hockey East. We're not on that level. And frankly I'm getting tired of people writing and talking about all the talent that we are recruiting - if that were true, we would be doing a whole lot better against teams outside the conference, never mind inside the ECAC. It's one thing to beat Bentley. It's entirely different when you go head to head with BC, BU, UNH and now Providence and beat them. That's the measuring stick and it has been far too long since we have been able to compete with these schools.

We really don't belong in the same 'neighborhood' as these other schools until we can prove that we can beat them consistently, not just once every six or seven years.

Skate, the fact of the matter is Harvard does get very good recruits. Recruiting and coaching are two entirely different things.

Getting outshot 17-3 is not simply a matter of poor coaching. Nate Leaman is having success in Providence yet there were Union people who wanted him out as coach and were probably happy that Bennett took over. How are they feeling now? I'm not saying that Teddy is the be all, end all of coaches. He certainly has had enough time to establish a winning program. And I posted earlier that if Harvard is one and done in the playoffs this year, it might be his final season behind the bench. But I'm also not convinced that we are as talented as people think we are.

Seriously? I suppose some Union fans may wander in here and give their opinions, but I'd venture that they're more than happy with Bennett's .663 win% (compared to .522 under Leaman), two ECAC titles (zero for Leaman), three NCAA tournament wins (zero for Leaman), and one trip to the Frozen Four (zero for Leaman). I bet they're feeling pretty good about Bennett "now."

I was going to go the opposite way and wonder who exactly wanted Leaman out. I mean, they've been a lot better under Bennett but a lot of that started with Leaman's work and they had no way of knowing they'd improve this much.

Yes seriously. On the Union board, I saw numerous complaints directed at Leaman's ability to coach and run a program while he was there. Frankly, I was stunned to see these comments. I'm sure they are happy with Bennett. That's the point; they wanted someone new.
