That's not too surprising - what is surprising is that neither Yale or Brown are one of them!!

Not sure about Yale in New Haven, but Brown is in the most upscale part of Providence. But agree with you, you just have to be prudent anywhere, and anything can happen anywhere.

There are pieces of information here that do not fit. If the player did commit for 2014, she should have been admitted early decision to Harvard last fall. If that was the case, she would not be able to accept an offer to Cornell in January. Did she ever make it through admissions? We will never know whether this was an issue with admissions, playing time, or both; or whether it was driven primarily by Harvard or the player. I think it is time to bury this topic and simply wish the player well at an excellent institution. I don't forsee future Harvard recruits paying much attention to this at all.

This doesn't add up. Harvard has forwards coming next year who will have trouble getting ice time as we have Fry and Armstrong returning from a year off. Perhaps the Harvard coaches did suggest a PG year and of course, O'Connor is well within her rights to disagree and seek another school. I just find it interesting that this is the second player in the past six years to de-commit and head to Ithaca (Karpenko being the other). At least this gives Harvard the opportunity to find another D for 2015-2016. We are loaded on the backend next season.

And that all goes back to earlier and earlier commitments and the risk in them. This was one of the early commits for this class I believe (the whole class, not just Harvard) and back then the Harvard coaches may not have even realized all of the injury year-off/return and olympic/return players they would have. Of course, they also may not have cared...

You can never have enough great players. The men's team got both Chuckie Hughes and Allain Roy in the 80's. Princeton and Yale couldn't believe that Roy chose Harvard and split time with Hughes. But that's the way it worked out. Happily for us anyway.

I just sense that there is more to this story than what is being reported. I have nothing to back that up but it seems like it all came together rather quickly. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Cornell did a little whispering in her ear about playing time in Ithaca vs. Cambridge given Harvard's depth next year.

Actually, upon further thought, I do not believe this is correct. Harvard offers single school Early Action, not Early Decision. In Early Action, an admitted student is not committed to attend the school - they are free to apply anywhere else they choose (unlike Early Decision where they are committed to attend if admitted and the financial aid package is sufficient). She could have been admitted EA to Harvard and then applied to Cornell as part of the regular admission pool.... no harm, no foul.

In looking at the schedule, today's game against Quinny and the game against Clarkson in two weeks loom as the most severe challenges for Harvard. Not to discount the trip to Dartmouth (always tough) and Yale but I don't see the Crimson losing either game especially after losing to the Eli at B-L. Brown should be a W. SLU is at home and while that is no guarantee, we should also garner two points. So it's today and the game against the Lady Knights.

Amazing that the Crimson are actually in a race for the top spot. I just didn't think they had the talent or depth to hang in there. Shame on me for counting them out.

Thanks for your mea culpa. You've saved me, for one, from posting what might have seemed like a mean-spirited riposte to some of your earlier, very sour-sounding judgements. Check out today's NYT article link at the Sochi thread for an appreciation of just how much some teams other than Team USA have had to prepare to "lead up to Sochi," given everything else on their plate. Let's enjoy the ride, come what may!

Good article except that it is worth noting what happened to the Badgers after the national championship season and the Olympic year. Their record fell so I was not totally off base in questioning whether Harvard could survive this season. That and a short roster did not hold much promise for success. To say that they have overachieved would be the understatement of the year.

This Harvard team reminds me a bit of the 2002 Olympic year when Niagara and Northeastern each had somewhat unexpectedly strong years due largely to the great goaltending of Tania Pinelli and Chanda Gunn. The biggest difference between this Harvard team and 2010 Wisconsin was that Harvard kept its all-American caliber goalie while Wisconsin lost the greatest NCAA goalie ever (due respect for Raty, but I take Vetter for her ridiculous postseason stats).

Amazing Harvard can start 17-2-2 while getting outshot 590-543.

Does anybody know who was on the ice when Harvard killed a full 2 minutes of 5-on-3 near the end of the Q game? Quite a feat!

By preventing a Q win, they both avoided a loss to a TUC and also secured a point that may be critical in holding onto the top seed in the ECAC tourney and avoiding being pitted against Clarkson or Cornell in the semis.

Good question, but don't know. "Live Stats" not much help at the time, and those able to access the Q audio probably heard little or nothing about who was on the ice for the opposition --- a chronic problem with away games, at least in the ECAC. (The Princeton feed Friday night was ghastly: non-stop blather about the big H-P night of various sports and much hyping of Ivy Digital's ability to split the screen 4 ways to catch all the action, as if we were in Las Vegas. Little attention to the actual game itself.) Anyway, back to the question of the five-on-three. No doubt Sarah Edney, one of the most steady and savvy players on the ice, and at least one of the Parkers, I'd guess. But the Harvard PK is such that I imagine any of the other regulars could have equally contributed to the feat.

However the spoilt point may end up hurting if they lose to Clarkson. Presuming Harvard, Clarkson and Cornell run the table vs the other teams, the Harvard-Clarkson game looms large in determining the top seed.

The winner of Harvard-Clarkson game figures to be the top seed in the ECAC tourney. If I'm not mistaken, Harvard will get the 1st seed if that game ends in a tie courtesy the HTH tie breaker. Not 100% sure, but think that the only way for Cornell to slide into that top spot is for Harvard AND/OR Clarkson to slip up in another game.

Cornell and Clarkson both still face Quinnipiac, so lots can still change. For example. Harvard loses to Clarkson, Clarkson loses to Quinnipiac and Cornell runs the table you'll end up with Cornell 37, Harvard 36, Clarkson 36. If Quinnipiac manages to beat both Clarkson and Cornell, they can possibly still get in the mix for 3rd.

Great analysis. As usual, the ECAC comes down to most likely the final weekend before all is decided. I don't see that changing this year. No question the Clarkson game is huge but as I posted earlier, Harvard's game with Dartmouth on Friday and the rematch with Yale could be where the Crimson might stumble if they are not careful. I have a feeling that payback will be in order for Yale. Dartmouth is having an off season but a win over Harvard would go a long way towards easing the pain. Not that I'm advocating that mind you!

Her first trip to Conte was a rough one too, last year's loss to BC in the NCAA quarters. But she had plenty of company in sub-par play last night.

Wow - looks like White hasn't dressed for the last 2 games and now Mastel also..... injuries? Illness? That is going to be a rough end of the season with 4 D (including Parker).
