Hacker nonsense

Re: Hacker nonsense

no one click on them as some people evidently are from some ridiculous reason.

A lot of those "views" are probably either the spammers themselves or otherwise originating from their activities, as opposed to standard-issue humans browsing the site. I wouldn't read too much into those numbers.

Once the posts get deleted it won't matter anyway.

Re: Hacker nonsense

I think I have gotten the spambots that were on the first page or two of most sections in the forum. More spambots are likely to appear in the future. Please continue to report them and otherwise leave them alone...unless you really do need movers in Mumbai...

Re: Hacker nonsense

Why the sudden appearance of all these spammers? Couldn't they have been doing this earlier?

They did, then the registration process changed. Then they tried some more but were thwarted by the registration process. Now the registration process has changed again because of new forum mods, or fewer forum mods, and they can't manually approve users going forward the way they could in the past. So now we have the return of thread spammers.

It's been a toss up for us between making it quick to register or locking things down and approving each registration manually. We're testing a forum anti-spam service that shares spammer profiles such as email address, IP, etc., plus content that we installed Wednesday evening. It might return some false positives, but so far so good.

I have seen other forums using vBulletin make one answer one of several simple questions pertaining to the forum before you post each time. Something like "How many players are on the ice at one time for each team?" It's a bit of a pain, but could that work here?

What if there's a PK in effect, Ralph? ;)

I tried that. I had a set of four questions and one would randomly appear when you tried to register. It was effective for a bit but was soon defeated by the spammers.
