Another interesting matchup. Gretzky is certainly a great hockey player, and a strong athlete. However, Pele is arguably the world's greatest soccer player ever, and if you've ever watched Pele, you would realize just how athletic he was. The man was amazing with and without the ball. He was an excellent passer, and obviously perhaps the best finisher the sport of soccer has ever seen. Of course, it's a tall task to take down Gretzky on a hockey board, but if we are truly voting for best athlete, Pele has to get my vote.

An amazing detail that I noticed in that video, about 45% of the shots were right-footed and about 55% of the shots were left-footed. That is truly extraordinary! Most soccer players favor one foot over the other at a far higher ratio than that.

He gets my vote as well.

Also, a good test for me in some of these contests is, "can I imagine this athlete in another sport?" I can see Pele playing American football and being a devastating linebacker or another Jim Brown or Walter Payton as a running back, or a scary good tight end. Gretzky, one of the two greatest hockey players of all time....other than hockey? hmm...maybe soccer, given his vision and passing skills, another David Beckham perhaps.

Tough contest.

I think the scene from vision quest when the dude talks about watching pele makes this match up a no brainer
