Goodbye, Lord Jeff

hmmmmmmmmmmm wonder who came up with that one, dont believe eveything you read,I dont for sure, my point is bigger than this naming episode, which I am sure there will be more, hopefully my high school does not have to change their name,The Braves......but the P.C. Bull**it that may ruin this country,or turn it over to those with initials for a name.I think its IS*** or whtever that jellyfish in the WH wants to call them.
What does a school called Indian River Central School with a nickname Warrior's do?

Re: Goodbye, Lord Jeff

Ya I mean Amherst's actions against the Native American's is documented historical fact so let's not even go there. And again, the school has said unequivocally that it's not changing the name of the school, and I'm pretty sure the town isn't switching names anytime soon either. Honestly, I don't have super strong opinions on the name one way or the other, but I find it funny that some people on here are basically arguing the school and the student body should keep a name they don't want just for the sake of not being seen to cave to political correctness. Backdraft21 even managed to bring Obama into it...
Relax.

The last time I went through Philadelphia was taking my son to visit Clarkson. Dairy farm, dairy farm, dairy farm, town. Repeat until you reach Potsdam. He was unimpressed. I thought he'd swoon at Gouverneur or Canton and excuse my middle finger as I drove through the east part of Canton. He chose a different college - as did all my sons. :sob:

The irony of this thread is that letter the school put out is perhaps the most level headed common sense letter ever written on this type of subject and political correctness. Yet, everybody is still going apesh*t over this...

You are correct. I had not seen nor looked for it until you said something. Very well done. And here's a link, in case others want to find easily.

Impressive letter indeed. I think people are quick to jump to the outrage because of what else has happened at other "elite" New England institution: the Halloween circus at Yale, the BLM library raid at Dartmouth, Williams disinviting a conservative speaker from an "Uncomfortable Learning" series, etc. I was never aware that Lord Jeffs wasn't an official mascot, as that's all I've ever seen Amherst referenced as. But, the reasoning laid out in the letter is encouraging.

With that said, two things about this debate annoy me as someone interested in history. 1) Judging 18th Century actions by 21st Century values (the use of biological/chemical warfare wasn't universally condemned until after WWI). 2) I find it ironic when people think they're being politically correct and enlightened in defending American Indian tribes and then grouping them all together. The Comanches are as different from the Iroquois, for example, culturally, linguistically, and politically as the English are from the Italians (even more so, actually).

And I guess there's a third thing. I understand that this is indeed a forum focused on DIII hockey, but I don't understand why people are so quick to shut down discussion about issues that affect the institutions that support and sponsor DIII hockey when the issue is something administratively, be it tuition costs, enrollment trends, or changing the mascot. Everyone on this board is a hockey fan, but most people here are also fiercely loyal to their school, and this forum gives us a venue to discuss these issues.

Re: Goodbye, Lord Jeff

Perhaps Amherst needs to go the Prince route.... "the hockey team formerly known as the Lord Jeffs"
