Good refs

Re: Good refs

The problem with having one of your best refs take the supervisor position is that there's one less good ref on the ice. Sure Piotrowski (now CCHA head of officials, or whatever the title is) was often a target of fans, but he was one of our best officials. As much as I dislike admitting it, I think McInchak is currently the best CCHA ref.

Piotrowski? Ask ANY Maine fan what they think about him but make sure you get fitted to ear plugs first.

Re: Good refs

I remember that article about Don Adam when it came out, being a cop doesn't make him a good ref, let alone person. Just ask BU coach Jack Parker. Don't worry, when Parker was screaming mad at Walsh and Adam, I did yell over the boards and told him not to worry, they are sh***y refs for all-WCHA games too, one of the players smirked. :D So rather than dwell on the negatives (I once got threatened to be kicked out of a game by Todd Anderson for calling him a wanker and I once got flipped off by NHL ref Kerry Fraser at an Avs game), let me think of good refs in the WCHA.

I think Thul and Hunt are above and by far the most consistent refs, and being consistent is all I ask for.

I was told by a CCHA ref (happened in 1982 so I have no memory of who it was) to Eff of and die after telling him to "wake your azz up out there!" in a game at Ferris State.

Matt Shegos was the last ref in the CCHA who was any good, and I actually thought he was quite competent. Now, I honestly can't think of any. And I'm sure that for every one we name as being OK, some fan will have some memory of some horribly biased officiating against their team by that ref. I have to think of individual refs that haven't made my blood boil recently. Barry Pochmara maybe? He was awful at first, but has sort of grown into the job. I do think Tony Molina is a quality linesman. Stays in good position and isn't a complete control tool on faceoffs anymore, but keeps them fair.

My biggest issue is that the players are much more skilled now than in the 1970s and 1980s, and the coaches are much better prepared, but I have not seen a corresponding improvement in officiating. In fact the system the NCAA employs with their four man crews has made it worse and much more inconsistent.

I said this same thing a couple of weeks ago, and in keeping with my previous post, McIchak had one of the worst weekends I have seen in years. He was awful for two full games in our last series against FSU. Missed too many calls to recount, blew a play dead too quickly that cost FSU a golden chance, missed one of the most obvious too many men penalties I have seen in the season + ND has been playing in the CFIA... He was so awful it made me question why anyone thinks this fool is qualified to carry a loaded gun.

Re: Good refs

Living in Colorado, I think we have not only consistent, but actually really good, linesmen for both CC and DU. Other games in the WCHA I have been to (North Dakota, St Cloud State, and Mankato) I have also been happy with the linesmen. I went to a Miami game a few years ago, and was dismayed at the whole of officiating on the ice, so at least I can say I see good linesmen game in and game out.

Re: Good refs

I would never admit it in person, but after 30+ years of watching college hockey, I believe all-in-all the officials do a decent job and some are consistently good. I grew to appreciate Gravallese in HEA and Fitzgerald is probably my all time favorite. I have grudgingly adapted to the four official system, which was implemented because the three guys could not keep up.

Now, next time you see me at a rink I will likely have some choice words for the guys in stripes.

Re: Good refs

What a tough question! Regardless of where you live or cheer for across our great nation, it's certainly up for debate until the cows come home. My only comment to this would be... I hope that someday, there's processes and systems in place, across the country, whatever the league - so when there is an errant-officiated game - be it bad penalty calls, offsides, missed video replays... poor television timeouts, rushing faceoffs - whatever the case......that there's a mechanism to correct the problem - often times overnight, within about 20 hours or so. Rather than having people say, "oh THAT'S LIFE.....those **** reffs"......... that we get other resources in place to rectify the "so-called" problem....... because today, right now - it seems like all we do is put up with it, and hope the next night "turns out better". If something is not right - don't ignore it and hope it gets better..... FIX It - IMMEDIATELY!

Of course you realize that you're looking for four-hour games: one hour of actual playing time and at least two hours of checking replays ad nauseum in order to "fix it--immediately." And while we're at it, we might as well also replay all of the errant passes, missed-open net shots, botched saves, and coaching moves that backfire so we can fix those immediately too.

Let's not become such slaves to the tekkie gods that we remove the human element from the games. For the most part, the zebras know what they're doing and give it their best shot. Individual officials are going to have good and bad nights, just like the players. It comes with the territory. (Of course when they do have bad nights, it's my team that always gets screwed.)

Re: Good refs

Agree with the comments on Gravellese and Bernard. Fitzy too. One thing I've noticed this year is that the new HEA officiating boss (Dan Schachte) seems to be working in some young legs I haven't seen much of in the past, which means that he's probably gradually (and gracefully) easing out some of the guys who have lost a step in order to head off any Steve McBride re-incarnations. Good move in the long run but probably some bumps in the short term as the new guys find their comfort levels. Of the younger guys, Kevin Shea skates well but IMO, has a bad habit of judging body contact by how much noise it makes, i.e., clean hard checks become charging or boarding. If he can get past this, he'll be fine. Of the newer linesmen, Tommy George looks really impressive.
We had two of the new guys together at the Tsongas, Ryan Hersey, Geoffrey Miller, and I don't think it went well at all. Too many calls, especially early, really dampened the game and cut off any real flow. I don't know if someone chatted with them during intermissions but they did allow play to proceed more during the second half of the game and the enjoyment of the game increased as a result. I don't think it was just a matter of the players adjusting to the refs, but that's really a subjective observation on my part.
