WaPo does not use the I word in its coverage.

It really is amazing how much violence in the world happens because people are unable to take a joke. Not just Muslim extremists, mind you (although that particular clique seems to be more sensitive than others), but humanity in general.

Clearly humanity failed in its early history. Just imagine how much more pleasant our evolution would have been if early cavemen required each other to have a good sense of humor before they were allowed to hold a club.

I see you and raise you the "T word":

White House Unsure Whether Murderous Rampage in France Is 'Terrorism'
'If based on this investigation it turns out to be an act of terrorism, then we would condemn that in the strongest possible terms, too'

Robin Williams does a bit where he was on a show in Germany and the hostess asked him "Why do you suppose Germans don't have a sense of humor?" 'Did you ever think it might be because you killed all the funny people?'

I think most of the people with a sense of humor probably got clubbed by those who didn't. We didn't evolve a whole lot differently...if it weren't for the rule of law, how long ago would Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert been clubbed to death?

My goodness! They aren't jumping to conclusions? What the hell is wrong with them? We have to invade Iraq at once!

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

I'm curious, if this really was the work of, say, a disgruntled former employee, why would we not be allowed to call that "terrorism"? Does the phrase "domestic terrorism" have some connotation that makes it unusable any more? And remember "environmental terrorism"? Do they have to be Islamic to be real terrorists?

OTOH, it's a good thing we didn't evolve to all look like Woody or Whoopie.

Because terrorism is a political tactic: to terrify people into submitting to your political agenda. The target of terrorism isn't the victims, it's the survivors.

A guy who didn't get a raise shooting up his office has no motive beyond revenge. That's mass murder, but it's not terrorism.

It could be terrorism...maybe he is trying to show his manager that he has the motivation to succeed :p

Terrorism usually denotes some sort of political or social movement behind the motivation and action. Domestic terrorism is just a sub-heading... war by other means. The real issue is once you separate out organized terror (like organized crime) from self-organized terror or individual-based terror (which is to say political motives, but not in specific concert with contributors) then you start getting into the borderline zones involving the mentally ill and the one-man crusades.

I suppose the categorization is more the degree of socialization involved.

edit: and let me say, the media continue to be absolutely craven cowards who seem to be more about interested in maintaining social class and their heads. They're running a lot of "don't kill us, we're not one of them" type comments today.

Really? I'd have thought the opposite: "now that they're killing US, it's serious!"

The Beeb was interviewing one of the (still living) editors of Charlie Hebdo, and he said "now of course you'll be running stories saying 'We're all in this together' but it means nothing because just like last time with Jyllands-Posten none of you will publish the cartoons, which means the terrorists win." The Beeb interview was none too happy with that sort of truth to power.

Heath really did make that movie worthwhile, didn't he.

The problem with the Nolan Batman movies is Batman's in them. Remove that character and they're interesting.

Gotham has the same problem. Punt muppet baby Bruce down the well and be done with it.

I completely disagree. I think you're missing something if that's how you feel about Gotham's Bruce. I could see an argument about Nolan's Bruce, but that's been well hashed out on this board.
