Really good story on the Beeb about the rise of radical political parties in Europe. They covered radical right groups in Sweden and France and the wackadoodle world of Greek politics where the top two parties are now a neo-Nazi party and a radical left party.

Only a matter of time until some of these nutbars come to power and then GWOT will be a little less Akbar and a little more Breivik.

These wingnut movements happen in Europe every time they have an entire generation of impressionable, disaffected, underemployed young people who give them power. See: 1780s France, Weimar-era Germany, etc.

I heard today that Fiat (Italian company) now owns both CaseIH and Chrysler.

As I roll along on Firestone tires (Japanese owned) past a 7-11 (Japanese owned) and a Trader Joe's (German owned), I realize I may need some Alka-Seltzer (German owned) and Dial soap (German owned) back home, and I ask myself, "Who won World War II?"

What practical difference does it make if the profits go to the zaibatsu rather than Warren Buffett? The world is so interconnected that they'd both make the same decisions regarding plant locations, employment, and the like anyway.

American made is far more important than American owned.

It's the game they play. If it's about socializing risk and privatizing profit then it's vital to protect American ownership. If it's about workers' rights and environmental protection then it's vital to realize that the market is global and regulation is not competitive. Heads they will, tails we lose.

The only change of significance in American politics since 1980 is it used to be the mission statement of the Republicans, whereas now the Dems are getting more and more corrupt. Exactly what you would expect if you allow the rich to buy Congress. It's now a race: can we get the Court back in time to roll back the predators, or will the Dems have simply turned into predators by the time they do get it back?

Wellstone's sudden death really screwed us on the Iraq war deal and until Warren came to power we've almost had nothing on the national stage. Sanders is close but he's too radical to get the national traction we need to quell the oligarchs.

The thing about Warren is, she might. Today, anyway, she is the real deal. If she actually ran for president I'm sure the process would grind her down to slime the same it's done to every major party candidate since TV began.

Gillibrand is going to be an interesting case, and not just cause OMG SHE IS HOT!!! She seems to be coming from the right place, but she's also a savvy politician and she's already cast a few votes that were pretty obviously the triumph of pragmatism over principle. So basically she's Hillary except probably not quite as sharp, and nowhere near as sociopathic since that's impossible.

Oh, and... a short skirt and a long jacket.

Their attack on the school in Peshawar was a direct attack on the Pakistani military, most of the children there were children of the military and many of the teachers there were wives of the military. Even other Pakistani terror groups have condemned that attack.
