The rapey-rapey stuff didn't help our image, either.

Did they wind up in Guam? My wife was working on that issue for a while and there was a big controversy among the locals -- half of them wanted the business and half of them had 16 year old daughters, too.

Guam, Hawaii, Australia.

My hope is that they keep getting pushed off to some base in South Carolina. When they're all sitting in one base with astronomical amounts of hardware, it should be frightfully clear that 3 million (or whatever) soldiers is too many.

I would just prefer to bring them home. I suspect they would prefer that, too.

But good luck getting us out of East Asia. We're going to be stuck there for all our lifetimes, barring some WW2-UK empire-ending event.

Panetta is talking about how there's no silver bullet for Al Queda.

Don't think that's news to anyone. But there is a better way here. Some think in terms of irradicating AQ and bring strategies to do that. IMO that's a mistake. It needs to be approached as though its a herpes outbreak.

You start by not alarming everyone by talking about it constantly (just like telling everyone you have herpes) which is a big improvment in the current strategy. Then its the reach/outcomes or symptoms of AQ that need to be addressed with the hope that it burns itself out. With that, policy will be much more effective.

Ironically buried in an article called 'Analysis: Obama falls short of meteoric expectations abroad'...is a survey of international opinion of US leadership in global affairs. And although the 'analysis' seems to have missed it, Obama did extremely well:

A poll released last week by Gallup and conducted across 136 countries showed 46 percent of respondents had a positive view of U.S. global leadership. That has fallen gradually from 49 percent in 2009 immediately after Obama's election, the highest since Gallup began polling on the issue in 2005. It remains well above the 34 percent recorded in 2008, the last year of the George W. Bush administration.

That is exceptional in that its nearly within the statistical margin of error...and is being compared with the starry eyed days immediately after an election. Very few presidents can hold serve throughout there presidency...globally the president has done that.

Foreign policy is the Dems' strong suit in this election. It's a different world. ;)

The tracking polls over at PollingReport have the election running around 50-50. So even though the environment has changed, the political IDs are still sunk in concrete.

man, what was he thinking...you don't go taunting bomb-building fanatics, especially on the eve of their greatest humiliation....

yeah, right, one of the apologists will tell me it's actually a shrewd move to egg them out of hiding....

funny how the intelligence apparatus that found and killed Osama was already in place when Obama took office, yet this is the only thing that isn't Bush's fault.

Monty Python meets US 21st century politics.....

Must take a crappy leader to call out the enemy.

Yeah, except for that whole part where Obama had bring back the resources for the Bin Laden man hunt after taking office, since your glorious leader diverted them.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

This is great news! It turns out that the latest version of an attempt to bomb an airliner with an "undetectable" bomb was foiled by a double agent who posed as a suicide bomber! If this now makes the terrorists suspicious of any potential recruit, that's a temporary good thing....especially as you cannot ask a suicide bomber to do a test run to check him/her out first.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Romney's foreign policy knowledge is minimal.
"An alliance not undergirded by military strength and U.S. leadership may soon become an alliance in name only,"

Honestly, if we cancelled NATO and made alliances with Britain, Canada and about two other nations, it would have the same effectiveness. We're talking about nations that couldn't project power into the Balkans or Libya without the US holding their hand.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Apparently the most stupid and pointless current war on Earth is, for once, not ours.

The real battle isn’t India vs. Pakistan anymore, but Each Side vs. the Unlivable Mountain, with its hundred mile an hour winds and negative-50-degree temperatures. The oxygen level is half of that at sea level. You can only hike at night because the sun’s heat makes avalanches more likely during the day. You get to shower once a month in the summer, and never in the winter, so you get lice, you fall into giant crevasses a hundred feet deep and ten feet across and die. And to top it off, idiot talk show hosts come tape episodes and eat all your **** food.

Over 3,000 soldiers on the Pakistani side have died since this all started, and most of them succumbed to the mountain, not India. Just this past month, an avalanche killed 138 of them, and now there’s growing sentiment on both sides of the war that this isn’t a smart war to be fighting.
