Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Actually 95th isn't terrible if you're on 65. But 105th is pretty far south relative to bbdl-country.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

The worst part is the 10-65 intersection, the 2 stoplights after 10 headed north are the worst. South of 10 is smooth sailing, and once you get past the airport it frees up again.

With that said, I've been going up University, to 10, to Hanson and north lately, because I can usually do it in about 5 less minutes.

It just seems to me that that is when it starts to open up a bit, because there's no one really there. After 120th? Where the old MGM was/supermarket is? That really opens up then.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

125th/main/242 is where it really, really opens up. After 109th is where everyone usually starts hitting 70.

It opens up there because that is where they took out the stoplights and put in overpasses, the next stoplight (Bunker Lake) usually backs up a little bit but it is usually not too bad. That is where it was backed up yesterday, it was backed up to the exit to Cub foods, and took me 45 minutes to get from the Cub area past Bunker Lake.

I saw a commercial for that the other day--I don't even know what to think. It's upsetting.

Work.

I'm due for a pretty big bonus because of my work with a particular client. Normally, the bonus is issued once my company receives payment on the invoice. Our business development department sent an updated contract (it renews automatically each year unless there's a 6-month notice that its being terminated) and was told (by business development) there was a verbal agreement that the updates were okay and the invoice was sent four weeks ago. I did all the work for the client for the past week or so, sent it out today, and then I get an email at 5pm saying we hadn't received a signed contract or a payment on the invoice so I won't be receiving the bonus. Our business development people are dumb.

Rant over.

This is grinding my gears. I've had weird problems with my contact lenses the last 3 weeks. Sometimes when I get to work, they're all foggy. If I change them, they're fine - but I've already had to do that 2 days in a row. I've been wearing lenses for 15 years and never had this problem. Drops help for maybe a minute or two, but then they're foggy again. Only happens in the morning. When I take them off, I can see stuff all over them - that wasn't there when I put them in an hour earlier. Anyone else have this problem?

Yep. Your eyes are depositing more protein than usual. Not much to do other than consult your optometrist. It sucks, I know.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Doing business with shady idiots grinds my gears. This is a long story, so I'll try to make it easier by writing it in a bulleted format:

  • My house had a furnace and a water heater, both vented out through our chimney.
  • Old furnace was pretty inefficient, so we decide to replace it with a new, energy efficient one.
  • We get in contact with Company A, which is a local franchise/distributor for a national chain (Company B) of heating/cooling contractors.
  • Company A quotes the job, which is to include the new furnace, and power venting for the new furnace out the side of our house. Since this leaves just the water heater venting through our chimney, the quote also includes a chimney liner to ensure better venting and no condensation ruining our chimney.
  • Company A comes out to our house at the end of August, installs new furnace and power venting.
  • Partially due to our own ignorance (and in my case, the fact that I wasn't around when Company A was doing the install), we didn't realize that they neglected to install the chimney liner until we had a completely different contractor out to take a look at our chimney. Sure enough, he pulled an end cap off of the ventilation of the water heater, and you can see the bricks of our chimney on the other end. No chimney liner.
  • Mrs. EoDS and I try for two weeks to get a hold of Company A. No dice. No one answers their phones, and our contact doesn't answer his e-mails. And there were a LOT of phone calls. I left quite a few messages on their company answering machine, including some fairly angry ones by the end of this two-week period.
  • After two weeks, I try calling Company B. At first, I don't get anywhere. I talk to a person, she says she'll escalate the case to someone for me, and I should hear back from them soon. I give them my number and e-mail. This was on a Thursday. I don't hear back from them before I call back late on Tuesday.
  • Meanwhile, Mrs. EoDS uses some connections she knows from her time working for Pieper Power (a major electrical company in Milwaukee) to get a good reference for a quote from Company C.
  • I call Company B on Tuesday, tell the same old story again, and this time ask for a support case ID number (which they evidently don't have) and a confirmation e-mail (which they don't do). Again, the (different) person on the line says she'll escalate it to a particular person. I assume nothing will get done.
  • Annoyed, I hang up the phone, say "screw this", and look up the office location for Company A online. I take off early from work to go pay a visit to these guys that have been blowing me off for weeks. I get there, and the place is deserted. I mean grass growing in the parking lot deserted. There's a flatbed and a pickup in the parking lot, but they've clearly been there for at least a few days.
  • I walk next door to an auto repair shop, and decide to chat up with the proprietor. Here I get the story of Company A: It's a family business with a Sad-Sack Owner and his Dip-**** Son. SSO loves his DSS, because he never fired him, even though he's evidently useless. According to the auto repair guy, DSS once even tried to steal a bunch of equipment from Company A on a flatbed, but didn't strap it down properly and it fell into the street. There were cop cars there and everything. Auto repair guy even says I'm not the only one looking for him: their landlord in the building next door is looking for him too.
  • Auto repair guy gives me a card for the Landlord, and I give him a call. Me: "Hello, sir, I'm trying to track down one of your tenants." LL: "Which one?" Me: "SSO" LL: "[laughter] Oh, man, I'm sorry. He's been ducking me, too." Landlord has all the sympathy in the world for me, but because SSO/Company A are still his tenant, his hands are a little tied in terms of letting me know how to get a hold of him. He does say he'll give me a referral for an attorney, if I want one. I thank him and let him know I'd call him back if I wanted that referral.
  • The next day, I call Company B back, armed with my new knowledge of what's going on with their franchise in Company A, plus my annoyance at how their support service has been and an energy drink. I am assured that someone will contact me by the end of the day.
  • Mrs. EoDS gets a quote from Company C to do the work for $275, plus we've gotten a few other quotes from calling around.
  • Meanwhile, SSO finally reaches out to us with an e-mail. He says he's had to close up his business due to to illness, he's sold off all his vans and equipment, etc. He'd be glad to refund us $150 for the work not completed. We counter in our e-mail, noting that our lowest quote to finish the work that they quoted and never did was nearly double that. I haven't heard back from him since.
  • By the end of Wednesday, I get a call back from a rather nice guy from Company B, who represents them out of Waco, TX. Waco tells me he's really sorry for all this, Company A and SSO hadn't been returning their calls for 3 weeks, etc. I ask what we should be doing about this, noting that we have other quotes, and that we've filled out papers to deal with this in court, but would rather not go that direction if we can. Waco says he'll see if he can get a hold of SSO and let me know where we can go from there when he does.
  • I get a call back from Waco yesterday. He talked to SSO, and they've discussed some details about Company A dropping them. SSO is ultimately going to be responsible for making good with his existing customers, and he's going to talk to DSS (who is somewhere else by now and- inexplicably, I might add- still in the HVAC/Heating/Cooling business) to have him handle the situation. After Waco tells me this, I struggle not to laugh.
  • I don't hear anything from DSS or Waco earlier today. So I call and leave Waco a message. Waco calls back and says that he talked to SSO, who said that DSS had told him that he had already contacted us. That's news to me, but I don't know if he'd contacted Mrs. EoDS. I tell Waco I'll look into that, but that I'd be surprised if that were true.
  • I get confirmation from Mrs. EoDS that, of course, she has not heard from anyone but me. Naturally. Either DSS is lying to SSO, SSO is lying to Waco, or I need to start drinking more.
  • I call Waco back and leave a message. I tell him my options are either (a) I wait around for DSS or SSO to get off their *** and do something (not likely), (b) have Company C do the work and I just eat the money (like a fool), or (c) we figure something out where Company B gets billed for it and deals with SSO in whatever way is appropriate to them and leave me out of it.
  • Finally, good news. Waco calls me back, says that I can just give his information to Company C and they'll figure out the payment between the two of them. All I have to do then is schedule the appointment. I won't have to take anyone to court, nor will I have to threaten SSO or DSS with a baseball bat to their kneecaps.

I need a beer. And the foresight so that the next time I need something done, I know to just ask for them to power vent the water heater while they're at it.

I passed the Bar every day on the way to work. Never stopped, though.
