Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

General gear grinder.

People who complain that they are bored, yet have the energy to post 5,000 selfies a day to social media. For the love of... if you are bored, put the smart phone down, get off the computer, and turn off the TV. Go outside and take the world in. It won't hurt.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

People who remain in the passing lane indefinitely yet won't actually pass anyone (i.e., they drive at the speed limit or below, but refuse to pull over to the right, ever).

Then you get a dangerous situation of people trying to edge in front of them on one hand while the people who are stacked up behind don't want to let anyone in on the other hand. Just a big pile-up waiting for the right trigger.

Some states are starting to make left lane camping a ticketable offense.

The autobahn implements a slightly more forceful tactic: Mr. Racing Hero in a GT3 flying up behind you at 160.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I got behind some absolute worthless piece of **** in the left lane who had the following bumper stickers:
I'm not going too slow, you're going too fast
If you're tailgating me, YOU are breaking the law
Speeding is a crime

Among others. I like to imagine a particularly hot place I'm hell he"ll be spending time. I've never come across someone I hated so purely.

I'd have the driver sentenced to driving from Paramus NJ to JFK on a Friday and observe every traffic law as written.

They'd never make it alive.

AKA the un-PC term "Mexican Roadblock."

Why did you have to share this? Now I'm angry because someone like that actually exists.

There used to be a guy that I commuted in the same general time frame- he had an escort wagon and drove at a strict 55mph. Had a bunch of signs in the car explaining why. Thankfully, he drove in the right lane. More thankfully, truck traffic was lighter much of that time, too- I can't imagine one car doing 55, trucks doing 60-65 (in theory) and cars doing 70+.

I once encountered someone like that. I pulled in front of him and slowed down to about 40. Then when he finally pulled into the right hand lane, I kept next to him for awhile. People like that are best viewed disappearing in the rear view mirror.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

On a related topic, I never ever mess with a person driving in a hurry. You never know what a person's story might be.

I once received a phone call saying my wife had just been taken to the emergency room. I drove rather quickly to get there as soon as I could. Who knows if someone else might be in a similar situation? It's not my job to make those decisions. Those people who think they are somehow engaged in social justice by blocking other drivers might be terribly wrong....maybe the other person isn't selfish and rude, maybe they really do have a real emergency. Would I be the one who caused a person to die because they couldn't be transported to the hospital in time just because I insisted on blocking traffic?

You know how I knew today was going to be a good day?

When you're morning commute is going so well that 86 barely keeps up with the left lane.

That's called I-75 through Detroit.

I love splitting I-96 up and seeing the difference in the two driving cultures. 85 east of Lansing going to Detroit will have tailgaters piling up behind you, but head to Grand Rapids and you feel like a NASCAR driver doing anything above 75.

Northern LP does that too. Set the cruise at 77 and storm past everyone at an alarming rate. Made that journey to/from Tech many times.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Left lane hogs grind my gears. Especially when they're going under the speed limit. Where I am, there's a place where there are two very close intersections: the first being for the Thruway, and then the second for a double left turn barely 100 feet later. And the left lane hogs INSIST upon hogging up the left lane just to use the left-most straight lane to go throught he second intersection. And they don't even turn left immediately after that!

I'll flash my high beams trying to get them to move over. When they absolutely refuse to, THEN I will pass them on the right (it's legal in NY under the aforementioned situation, although they are driving illegally because NY is a "must move" state), and if I move over because I'm going to go to a left turn lane, then THEY will flash their high beams at me. Morons.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

If you're an independent contractor, you may have to. If you're in an employee - employer relationship, you do not.

Thirty day rule. You only file if you work in a different state for more than 30 days.

And THEY are breaking the law if they are in a must move state.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

My general rule of thumb for left lane driving: Either passing (I'll stay in there for a maximum of 20 seconds per car, citing the need to not disrupt the flow of traffic if necessary), or turning left within the square of the speed limit in feet. Yes, I understand that's almost 1/2 mile for 50 MPH.
