Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I knew folks rooting for Germany because they beat the USA so that meant we were put out by the champions.
Your friends were not apparently paying attention to the tournament!

Pssst! Belgium says, "Hi."

The Internet was riddled with those comments last night. Pretty embarrassing, but not surprising. Belgium/Germany/Luxembourg/Holland are all pretty much the same country in the mind of many Americans.

So when Germany invaded Belgium and Holland it wasn't actually invading itself? I'm so confused.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Heh. I wasn't really paying attention. This is the comment I heard in response to the win. I watched the end of a few games- the winning goal last night was sick- but I n't following like some of my friends and fam.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Why do people root for another national team like it's their own country, or like it's a professional club?

A girl on Facebook just posted a profile picture of her in a Germany jersey with the caption "Time to add that 4th star!" (teams have a star on their shirt for each World Cup title). She also changed her cover photo to Germany celebrating. Two weeks ago she was living and dying with the US results. She's from America, she has a Scottish surname. I'm sure she has some German heritage but that only allows you to have a "Hey, that'd be neat if they won" following, not a "celebrate like you're a German national" following.

I've noticed the people that do this never seem to have trouble picking the US for basketball or hockey.
I'm guessing it is because soccer fans have a need to cheer for something, anything, just to show other people that they're hip soccer fans. They're the hipsters of the sports world, and that is not a good thing.

Not quite. Hipsters would be bandwagon fans who loudly proclaim they rooted for Germany all along, and most-assuredly before it was cool, while drinking Beck's because it's bad and cheap, therefore ironic.

Hey, at least we can say we were knocked out by a team that was knocked out by a team that was knocked out by Germany.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

They made it into the next round. I remember when they weren't even able to Q so that is good.

I lived in England when I was a kid and followed Leed Utd like a religion when I was there. Haven't watched in a bit. Man- the acting and flopping is irritating. Germany # 7 spent more time on the pitch, writhing, than he did upright. If anything grinds my gears it is the ba5****ization of the game to theatrics. Athletically Soccer needs skill and lots of stamina. to watch the flopping is insulting to the athleticism.

W tee F why is the t ard **** in my word?

Hmm...interesting question. I am going to try to post the name of Dr. Who's time ship to see what happens: Dr. Who travels in a time ship called the ****is that resembles an old-fashioned English police call box.

Edit: WOW! look at that...the board automatically turned Tar-dis into ****is! this new censorship mem is really re-tar-ded, eh? ;) or should I say "re****ed"? oh, wait, this isn't the PC police thread, sorry, never mind....

People who get squeamish over the use of "death penalty" in one thread but then complain about political correctness two seconds later in another really grind my gears.

The most recent addition to the filter list looks to be a bit ****y to the party. I received more than my share of detentions in high school for being ****y to 1st period. Waking up is so hard to do.

What happens if board needs a fire re****ant, will it just let the place burn instead?

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

My dad strikes again: Last night, I had some volunteer work to do, so I wouldn't be home to make dinner. I figured we were having hot dogs, which are easy to make, so I asked my dad if he would cook them and I would have my share when I got home. When I got home, I found my dad cooked HIS share, but left me to cook my own.

I'm also sick of the fact that he asks for my help cleaning the house, but he's never around to clean when the time comes. He has energy to run a friend of his all over God's green Earth (the same one that always needs to go here, there, and everywhere), but never the time to clean or attend to matters of this house.

I sense a theme here. I recommend pretending you are roommates. You don't need to be disrespectful just treat hem like someone you barely know. Do your own laundry, cooking, shopping, bill paying, etc. When asked say you are practicing independence as you know you will need to learn to live on your own.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

If you can come up with a better explanation, I'm all ears.

:D you are not nice :D

If I was a "nice guy", I would drink with abandon. Fark that sh*t.

I agree, roommates is the way to go. IMO, your FIL has already expressed that he isn't interested in a father/son relationship.

Well, he wants a relationship but isn't very good at it. As the 'kid' in the relationship you aren't responsible for making him act like a grown up. You, can act like a grown upt tho. If he is a roommate then you don't expect as much or feel the urge to give as much. He is behaving like a roommate so you should too. Less pressure on you.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Here's something for me. The Mrs. and I are trying to eat healthy on a budget (she's a teacher that's off for the summer), but the gluten free and healthy stuff is way more expensive than the usual crap. The Big Mac should be a hell of a lot more expensive than the good stuff.
