I have done it, they dont tag you for it. You know what they do tag you for...checking your email while stopped at a stop light. Full stop behind another car. State Trooper pulled me over after the light turned and my phone was put away. That was an expensive lesson to learn.
I wouldnt care so much if I didnt see literally dozens of people do it while driving at high speeds, every day, by police officers (and sometimes cops themselves) and not get tagged at all. Meanwhile I am stopped and get a ticket on a technicality. (my car wasnt in park so technically I am driving...that State Trooper said that to me along with how I am basically being used as an example) I always have had the Charlie Brown luck...

It is illegal to text, email, surf the web, etc. on a smart phone, I don't believe it is illegal to talk on the phone, yet.

Maybe it's not either, but rather looking for a scapegoat. We had an issue with the project I'm working on where we fixed a bug in release A, but mentioned that we were not going to go back and fix it in previously handled information because we weren't able to put good information in there. Fast forward a few weeks later, we're getting yelled at and blamed for having a bad application because someone copied one of those bad instances of data to a new instance of data, and claimed our bug fix didn't work. And it kept happening for a few months.

It's not illegal if you have the magic badge on. They're using cell phones, laptops, all kinds of stuff.

Maybe you're in a state with a mandatory surcharge that basically quadruples the fine on minor offences? Or is that just the Vampire State?

Oh, I've heard some horror stories about that from some people where I used to work. Management's used to getting whatever the heck they want whenever the heck they want it.

It was a lot more than $50. I am not sure any moving violation is that cheap. It was over $100 but I got the fine reduced.

I just have the problem that THAT problem is already covered under "distracted driving" laws. We don't need more laws. Enforce the ones we have.

In MI, I've always said that enforcement of texting-while-driving laws is difficult. Cop can pull you over for looking distracted, but has to prove texting took place. That's not always the case - what if I'm following directions and thus looking at the map on my phone?

Maine also, its called distracted driving. Texting is illegal also but they have it so instead of just catching you texting they can get you for distracted driving. Not sure if they can get you for using a GPS mounted on your dash though?

For some reason, THAT'S okay. Like using the GPS IN your dash (the display that many vehicles have). I don't get it, but whatever. I don't use any of that crap anyways. I just have to watch out for the idiots that do.

I believe that it is legal. Sat Nav devices are legal, and if your phone is being used as a sat nav then that is legal too. But that does make it difficult to enforce the texting laws. The issue isn't the GPS devices, they're handy at times, the issue is that many people using them are dumber than a box of nails.

Actually it only does if said person can prove they were on GPS. If they close it they are screwed. If someone is pulled over and says they were on gps the officer can ask for the phone to check.
