Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Developer: Can you SIT test [application name]?
Me: Sure. Here you go, the [report output] isn't formatted to the data needs of the production team, the report shows as HTML/XML code. See the attached document.
Developer: Can you send me an example of data from UAT?
Me: Sure, here you go. UAT report attached. [Report is correctly formatted, shows exactly how the production team needs it to look.]
Developer: Interesting. I have the same issue in SIT but when I run it locally on my computer against SIT, I don’t have an issue. My first thought is that it is not an issue, but I will delve into it deeper.

How can you think that it's not an issue when the networked version of the app - the version deployed to our users - is the version that's kicking out garbage reports? What the ****?

When someone in the office opens a document you are working on, and then walks away from their desk, leaving the document open on their computer, so that you can only access it in read-only status when you need to make urgent changes to it. Sure, you can resave it under a new name, and then, once they are back from wherever, save over the old one, but that is an extra hassle that shouldn't be necessary.

We have one person who does that all the time. If you are done, close out, please!

Just wait until you get to merge conflicts. ;)

Create documents and workbooks with the Read Only prompt upon opening the file. It actively forces a user to decide if they're actually editing the file or simply reading it. You could also enable Sharing on the file, which allows multiple users to edit it, but creates the potential for serious problems if people are adding or removing rows or columns of the workbook.

Thanks, we've been doing that with our templates for years already. I might have to start doing that for individualized custom work as well if this problem persists.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I was reviewing my cell phone bill online today to see if it had been updated from when I re-upped my contract, got the new phone, etc.. Sure enough, it's all the old billing info, so I made use of the chat session. My bill had gone up $15, which is what made me think about going into a store and taking care of whatever absurd charge was happening. Turns out that my contract ended on November 19, as that was the two-year mark for my contract. Normal. Well, it turns out that that billing cycle for the company ends on the 20th of the month and anybody who's off contract on that specific day gets hit with a non-contract fee. So because I couldn't get into the phone store to renew my contract the very day it ended, the company charged me what is, in essence, a penalty. I'm so glad Emma the Service Rep and I were not on a phone line. Nice customer-friendly service.

There's been a fly in my house for two days. Every time I swear I finally got the *****er, he seems to escape and reappears later to drive me nuts.

Dear militant vegan: Stop saying "Fish are friends, not food."

When I can take a fish to the pub, knock back a few pints, and share horror stories about my job with said fish, then maybe, just maybe, a fish will be my friend.

Until then, Mr. Salmon is going on my plate.

If they are actively trying to convert you, I would stop associating with that person - just saying. It's not worth the BS.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Oddly enough, the holidays at work are not grinding my gears. I KNOW we're going to get slammed, I know people are going to be mean. Unlike last year, where the holiday pace and customer attitudes got to be too much, this year, I'm expecting it, and have braced myself accordingly.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

As for the fly, he's been killed at least 4 times in the last 36 hours, with solid evidence each time. So I'm pretty sure we have a new "nest" of some kind in the complex.

Are your tana leaves properly secured?

On another front - people who don't turn on their headlights at night.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Fly #X has popped into view. This is getting ridiculous, as I've never had anywhere close to this many flies in the previous 18 months in this apartment combined.

And no, I don't have any rotting food in the garbage disposal or anything like that. Believe me, I've checked.
