Frozen 4 site selections?

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Pretty good. The only thing I would have done differently is swap Chicago for Washington.

Glad the NCAA listened to the fans and gave Tampa another FF so quickly.

Good to get a city like Chicago into the mix, no?

2015 Regionals:
Midwest - Compton Arena (Notre Dame) South Bend IN

2016 Regionals:
Midwest- US Bank Arena Cincinatti OH

OK then. Don't think Cincinnati will go well and if Notre Dame misses the tourney, South Bend will be a disaster. I like the fact that they are ok with smaller facilities now for these things, but South Bend, Indiana? Come on.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

glad to see it return to Tampa. I guess I won't complain, considering there's no football venues listed. :p

In a way, Detroit was a success: it convinced those money grubbers that there isn't a demand for FF tickets that would make a football stadium necessary. :)

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

So much for the committee moving away from campus sites.

And that Cincy regional is at the very site of the infamous 1996 Frozen Four. Hopefully they got a new ice plant since then. :p

Cincy hosts a regional this year as well and I can only assume it will be a disaster, so why not double down?

As to the campus sites, that's strange. I know UND put in to host at either Scheels Arena in Fargo or REA. They went with the non-campus site that seats 7,000 less people.

How does Bangor, Maine feel now ?

How does Bangor, Maine feel now ?

Now the Committee is assigning NCAA hockey regionals to arenas seating 5,000 or so, I wonder how the administration in the city of Bangor, Maine feels about leaving an ice surface out of their new Cross Center ?

Lots of eggs in Turner for your faces, ayuh....

Pretty happy with the selections. I would have liked for Brooklyn (or even better, MSG) to get a chance because it'd be nice to take the subway from my apartment to the Frozen Four, but that wasn't realistic.

Well I guess since they got the Frozen Four sites right, they threw all sense out the window when selecting the regional sites.

Ditto.

MSG would have to bid in order to host, and as far as I know that's never been the case.

Let's be honest, Bangor would be a miserable failure without Maine. Too risky to do so far from the footprint out east. In the west you see these things because the fans are used to travelling so far. In the east you just can't get away with that.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

ps - why is Wisconsin a host for the Tampa one?

<a href="http://host.madison.com/sports/columnists/andy_baggot/badgers-sports-uw-bids-to-host-a-frozen-four-in/article_0d91a7ad-64fa-5541-a1cd-d815a0d56307.html">Some background on the unlikely pairing</a>.

Reinforcing my belief that 99% of people on Twitter are idiots, lots of complaints about Tampa in the USCHO article. Probably from people who did not go to the last one there (good thing they don't pick the venues for the people that stay home and watch on TV).

Also, interesting that a lot of people want it to be in THEIR town. I would rather it's NOT close to my home... so I'm not too excited about Chicago.

+1 on both points.

Because Wisco worked with the Tampa sports commission to put the bid in. There'e no rule that you have to "host" in your home area, or even have a team in the sport, as I recall, the Naval Academy was host in DC.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

I like it. The only thing missing from this thread is some idiot complaining that Omaha or Kansas City didn't make the cut because they now have an Applebee's downtown.

Looks like Chicago got the "new city" bid out of this round over Brooklyn. I could have lived with either one. Would have liked to see DC again over St Paul but whatever. Minny is a good hockey state. Boston and Tampa - well done.

UAH (the closest school) was with Tampa, but with the whole "almost got rid of hockey" turmoil going on at that time, the Tampa Bay Sports Commission took the reigns alone. During the FF down there, most coaches and ADs were in Tampa, the pair met back together (they have had a history based on a football bowl) and the rest, now we see, is making what we all expect to be another successful FF in Tampa. I cannot wait.

In a related note, I am thrilled about Chicago, too bad the United Center is so far from downtown, but parking/transport is easy. I'll be making the trek.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Hate when it's in Boston because I live there. Enjoyed Tampa, good facility, the organ was great. We have family in St. Paul and Chicago, so those are fun, too; two birds with one stone.

Personally, I liked Tampa and Columbus, being a horse racing fan. There are a few people who attend racing and the Frozen Four finals on Saturday as I've talked to them at Beulah, in Columbus and Tampa Bay Downs. The Frozen Four coincides with the Kentucky Derby preps, so we took side trips to Keeneland in Lexington, KY when the site was Columbus, and the Florida Derby at Gulfstream, in Hallandale.

First and foremost, the issue is with the venue more than the city. The United Center is located in a bad area of town with little or no bars/restaurants/hotels around the arena. Kind of the same problem in Philly.

I also think Chicago is "too big" of a city to host the FF. Because of the above reason, people are going to spread out all over town and some of the vibe is going to be lost.
