Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

I don't know what to think of all of this...I mean Dish Network is still going to charge me their cancellation fees if I switch, but I have no plans to switch unless this drags out a few months.

Lie :p Call Dish and tell them you have a deal with a cable co (DO NOT name them...just refer to "my local provider") to buy out your contract. I told DTV I had a deal to buy out my contract and they gave me free HD and a monthly discount.

All television providers do this every once in awhile...

Last year DTV had the Versus thing, and they still don't carry all the HBO channels. Just use it as an excuse to get money back. If you're paying full price for TV you're just throwing money away.

Try the "breach of contract" routine. You signed up planning on, and being shown the Fox Sports channels and now they don't provide them so you should be able to get out of said contract. Hey, it's worth a try.

They can get around that by saying channels can be added/subtracted from your package at any time. But again, that can help you get discounts/free stuff. Without the Fox Sports Nets you probably lose your local NHL/NBA team so you can try for Center Ice or League Pass. You can also argue that the package you signed up for is no longer worth $X/month.

It's not an ideal solution, but you can work it to your advantage.

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

I wonder if it has anything to do with Rupert Murdoch owning Fox and DirecTV...

Murdoch no longer has a share in DirecTV, he sold it earlier this year. Liberty Media is the largest shareholder (48%), they're the owner of Starz, Encore, half of Encore, the Atlanta Braves, and three of the FSN (Rocky Mountain, Pittsburgh and Northwest).

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

Also the $12 thing on DTV isn't exactly accurate as I recall. For each different add on package the price goes down. So the Sports pack would only be $12 if it was the first one added. Otherwise it goes down to $10 and so on as you added other things (like movie channels).

So its not any one network attributing to the price being higher, since the difference varies.

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

I can see them blocking out your local Fox Sports Channel, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to see out of market games that you would be paying an additional fee for. Of course, if it wasn't hockey season I wouldn't care at all and would want DN to cut costs as far as possible.

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

I have Dish and saw that they going to include CenterIce free of charge until they work it out. However, during the preseason, Red Wings games at the Joe were BlackedOut!!

How come you never see QVC or the Shopping Network in contract disputes with the satellite people? (don't answer that, I could find the rhetorical emoticon)

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

FYI.........

Page 8 of the Minneapolis Star Tribune has a full page ad paid for by Charter, Comcast and DirecTV.

More or less the ad states that in addition to losing FSN, FX and National Geographic on 11/1 the Twin City market is likely to lose Fox9 which shows Vikings games in additon to regular Fox programming.

The bottom of the ad states "What good is an empty Dish? Don't wait, there are other providers that will give you what you paid for".

I guess I will wait until 11/1 to make a choice on whether I am switching or not.

If I decide to switch to DirecTV what are the pros and cons as compared to Dish Network?

Edit: Should this thread be moved to the Cafe?

As to the first question, I think those that have DirecTV probably find plenty of reasons to hate it (I certainly do) but then so do those with DishNet and cable as well.

Second question, I think this still belongs here. A lot of USCHO folks watch a lot of college hockey on these channels and are Dish subscribers. Seems it is more related to college hockey than are most threads in the Cafe.

DirecTV has the 101, which produces its own material (Friday Night Lights/The Dan Patrick Show) and reairs uncut versions of older shows (currently hits like Oz, Brotherhood, The Wire, Deadwood).

They have the Grand Slam Experiences. Bonus channels of the four majors in golf and tennis. I like it because you aren't at the whim of a producer in Bristol. It also allows you to see stars who don't make the bigtime on ESPN. You can also choose to see people play a hole, like you were at the tournament in person. For example, for this past British Open, they had a team do just the Road Hole.

They also have the Sunday Ticket in addition to the other packages like Center Ice and Extra Innings.

Right now I think if you switch they are offering 5 months free. Use the referral # in my sig and you get an extra $10 off for 10 months (as do I) :)

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

So I complained via online chat to Dish Network...I got ONE $3 credit (so I could pay for one episode of Sons of Anarchy on itunes), 3 free PPV movies and free HD Platinum for 3 months. not bad I guess, HD Platinum should be cool if I actually remember to check out those channels. I'd much rather get $10 or $15 off per month but whatever. We're also getting every non-fox regional sport network and NFL Redzone for free.

No Center Ice to make up for losing access to the Minnesota Wild.

This is a no-brainer... DirecTV is the best dish provider if you are a coll hockey/sports fan. It is not even close. And, with DirecTV, you don't get dicked around every time there is the slightest hiccup (like what is going on with Dish Network right now).

Get DirecTV with SportsPak and no worries. I also get Fox Soccer Plus and btwn those channels I get nearly every English Premier League soccer game, too. Awesome...

Each week around 2-3 H.E. games... 2-3 WCHA games.. 1-2 CCHA games... not bad.

Yeah, 'cause you guys had no problem what-so-ever with Vs. last year. Listen, each provider has its plusses and minuses. DirecTV might be a marginally better option (what, you get the FCS channels for NoDak games? Plus, you bring up a sport 3 people care about (soccer), and I get the Fox Soccer Channel on Dish anyway), but Direc costs more. Dish has everything you just mentioned (FSN North/Wisconsin and Rocky Mountain for WCHA; FSN Detroit for CCHA; NESN and Comcast New England for ECAC/HEA and CBS College and ESPN-U). It's splitting hairs...

Re: Fox/Dish Network Dispute Affects College Hockey Fans

The dispute seems to affecting Center Ice on DISH. Last night, tonight and in the near future there are far less games in HD; only 1 to 3 per night. Have you watched a Center Ice game in SD? Absolutely horrid.

You go to the DIRECT TV website and almost ALL of the games are in HD. This dispute better be settled soon................

The one thing I don't like about DirecTV is their stupid commercials.

Apparently, if you have DirecTV you are a smug a-hole who deserves to have a dirty dish towel wrung out into your lemonade at the local diner. They also have one where DirecTV customers get their heads slammed into the partition by a disgruntled cabby.

I don't see how those ads are supposed to make you want to get DirecTV. Maybe I'm too literal-minded.

How many TVs do you want to have hooked up?

DirecTV required you to have a receiver at each TV, first receiver is free, each additional is $5.

Dish Network allows two TVs to be hooked up to the same receiver, any additional receiver will do the same for $5 a month. The DVR can be watched on either TV that the receiver is connected to. So if you have your living room and bedroom on the same receiver with a DVR, you can watch the shows you DVR on either TV. Plus it saves money by having less receivers.

This past year, not all Twins games were in HD on Dish Network, including all games on My29, WFTC. WFTC is not in HD on Dish Network. It is on DirecTV and Fox Sports North is HD all the time on Direct.

I have DirecTV and my parents had it and got Dish Network for their deal(and after their DirecTV DVR died a month before their contract expired and DirecTV wanted to charge them for it.) They'll probably switch back after the contract. You just have to play the game. They're all shady and willing to screw you over if you don't read the fine print.

Yup you constantly have to push to keep your bill down and get free stuff.

Those are for Sunday Ticket, and you're supposed to look at them with a touch of sarcasm. Literal translations will not do.

Like I said before, anyone who is paying full price just isn't trying. It's real easy to get discounts, even during the contract. After the contract it's a piece of cake.
