The rankings have also generally had a great bias in favor of private universities and against the large, land-grant state-funded universities. Not just now, but in the past as well. Never mind that great research comes out of those "agricultural colleges..." (which include U of M, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Cornell, Illinois, Iowa State, Penn State...)

These kinds of rankings are designed to move product. If you come out with a list that ranks Princeton, Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, and Harvard as the top universities in the world every year, there's no buzz.

I figured as much. Worthless. The U of M at 418 is preposterous. I'm not saying it should be top 50 or anything but 418? Wow.

My favorite part is that the University of Minnesota-Morris comes in at 143.

The rankings people actually use are out today - the US News and World Report isn't good for much these days (they used to be a weekly newsmagazine, I believe they are now monthly), but their rankings are still one of the gold standards given the wide variety of things that go into the rankings.

Don't forget to add Air Force and Army as they would be near the top of the list if they were listed as universities instead of colleges.

Army's near the top of the list of colleges. Air Force must be too, I feel like I missed them but I didn't see them there.

For some reason they put them into the regional rankings (AF west and Army east).

That makes 27 of the 59 Division I teams in the "Top" lists.
