This is my sugar policy:

Since added sugar clearly does not support my goals, I limit. But if it's my birthday, a holiday, a special occasion, or if I haven't had something good in awhile, I will splurge. My last treat was a double chocolate muffin from Big Apple Bagels a couple weeks ago.

However, I won't eat it for the hell of it. For example, my place of work offered paczkis for Fat Tuesday, so while my coworkers were eating 3-4 of them, I passed. "Just because it's sitting there" is not a good enough reason for me to indulge.

At home, and for work breaks, I try to have fresh fruit, Larabars, granola bars, or Clif bars on hand.

First day back at the gym. Took last week off as I was battling a nasty head cold. Easing back into it. Did a brisk walk instead of my running training. Feel good. It is amazing how not working out for a week takes a toll on you.

Did that about 2 weeks ago. Took about a good week to get my lungs back it seemed.

I'm not that disciplined as I'll eat honey but I agree you lose the desire after awhile. Went out to eat for VD day, I had mashed sweet potatoes, soon as tasted it I knew brown sugar was a main ingredient. Left it on my plate.

No cake or bakery goods? I just don't know if life is worth living without the small pleasures like that.

I don't eat cake but two or three times a year. Baked goods maybe half a dozen to a dozen times a year. It's all about moderation.

Yes. I worked hard to arrive at a moderate, balanced lifestyle. And for me, a life without cake, muffins, scones, etc... Is not worth living.

And for the record, between late 2008 and early 2011, I did quit dessert and cake and baked goods. All it did was turn me into a sad and miserable human.

As for the Whole 30, the no gluten, sugar, etc challenge? That did NOTHING for me except make me miserable and send me back to the Pecan rolls at Panera bread.

My life, my running, and my mood ALL improved when I added sugar and gluten back in.

I really resent zealots telling me that I'm unhealthy, that I eat poison, and that I'm going to die of a horrible disease because I eat what the Internet is demonizing this cycle.

Finally made it back up to 10,000 steps a day. Still not in full run training mode. I hope to by the end of the week, but with the schedule this week, I'm aiming for next week.

Hey - whaddaya know? You were right! :D

The course (first half of LA Marathon) was a lot hillier than I realized it was going to be. I did 100% of my training at the beach (perfectly flat at sea level) so that hurt me a lot - that plus a slow start (too many people!) meant I missed my "hope" target by a good 10 min - but I would still qualify for the USA Half in San Diego for my age, so I'm definitely pleased with that. Unfortunately, I'll be living in Florida by then, so I'm not coming back to San Diego for it. Need to find my next race in Florida, but no way in heck I'm doing a half or full in Florida in the summer.

I'll probably target the Marine Corps in DC (late October), but not really relishing the thought of training in the tropics. My mom completed her 21st MCM last year at age 72 - she's done the last 19 in a row, including one 6 weeks after her second mastectomy. I think she has just a couple more left in her and I definitely want to do it with her again one more time before she hangs up her Mizunos.

Why, because people want to take a pill(or whatever) its easier

This I agree with you on. No one wants to hear that weight loss and fitness come about because of hard work and smart decision making.

I do think I'm losing again, primarily because I'm getting some sleep and trying a whole bunch of new recipes. Variety is key to my "diet."

went back to lifting weights (at body pump - anyone else do it?) for the first time in 8 months since I screwed up my elbow. some soreness, but not enough to make me stop (although I am keeping it relatively light). triceps and biceps are the worst. I should probably work a rest day in there, but I figure pilates and yoga are pseudo-rest days.

less "added sugar" thing is going pretty well, after an initial setback. sticking with fruits and veggie-related snacks or stuff with very low added sugar. definitely noticed the past week or two that I'm not as hungry. occasional small servings of ice cream make life worth living.

Another set back in my training. Upper respiratory infection. Still taking it easy away from the gym because I don't think others would like to hear the hacking cough that I have.

Tried pre-workout today for the first time.

Tried creatine a while back but it bloated me (water weight) and I abandoned it.

This is aminos and a bit of caffeine.

Made me have to take a **** midway and I feel less energetic than normal.

Thinking it might not be for me...

Why are you trying supplements, looking to bulk up like Hans and Franz or Aaron Rodgers?

Yes.

Trying to add muscle and strength.

Have hit a plateau and trying to get past it.
