Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

20.84 very wet miles tonight.

Biggest challenge I face as a marathon/long-distance runner is not the miles themselves. It's feeding the bottomless pit afterward. Chicken tortilla soup, a couple pieces of French baguette, a Larabar, and 2 bottles of beer later... I'm still hungry.

I got a Fitbit for Christmas. It is a nice motivation to get to 10,000 steps a day. I'm usually active at work, but when it is slow, I'm sitting at my desk. I take advantage at the gym to get those extra steps. Great motivator.

My dietitian recommended I weigh myself once a week. But I believe that when I threw my bathroom scale away in 2012, I made one of the best decisions ever. Instead of weighing myself, let's go by running time/distance, size large (down from an XL) shirts, and decreasing jean size as signs of progress.

This.

Also, I have learned that for long-distance running, I need to maintain weight, or stay within a healthy weight range.

And in terms of running time and distance, with snow on the ground, I am content to get the miles in right now.

Since you're looking for a 5K to run soon, check out tcmevents.org. They have a bunch of races going throughout the year, so you should be able to find one easily.

When I go back to the dietitian in March, I will ask what 150g carbohydrate looks like. Because I really don't think it means "eat all the Nutella," nor does it mean "eat 3 or 4 triple chocolate muffins in a half hour."

I'm looking at doing the Medtronic Mile Run as a starter. I was looking at doing a fun run/walk with my dad in my hometown in June, but I have Twins tickets for that day. Thanks for the link! I might start volunteering through them to.

Yep. There are plenty of events happening around you.

Started the year weighing 220 lbs, 8 oz; down to 217 lbs, 12 oz.

-2.75 pounds in 2 weeks is good, safe, gradual. Just what the dietitian and I wanted.

Half marathon coming up on Valentine's Day. I'm shooting to PR, which I think is an achievable goal for my first half. :D. I've done 2 marathons, just never a half.

(also - down 16 lbs due to the training, which I definitely needed!)

You'll have a PR no matter what! Go out there and rock it!

2 weeks away from the Groundhog Marathon, which is a marathon in the middle of winter in Grand Rapids, MI. It's a marathon with plenty of snow on the course.

Last year, I finished in 6:15:36... this year, if I can stick to a low-fiber diet the day before the race, and avoid coffee on race morning, I'm looking to break 5:30:00.

Now up to 2 minute walk/2 minute run. This time I am able to do this multiple times without my knee giving me trouble.

Good, you're getting closer to your 5K!

And I measured myself today:

32" waist
37" hips (down 1 inch since I last measured)

When I take off my shirt, I can tell I'm losing fat.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

This weekend, I completed the Groundhog Marathon Whole Hog Challenge, which is the 1/6 (4.4 miles) marathon the night before, then the full the next morning.

In the 1/6 marathon, I finished in 40:10, a 9:07 mile, which beats last year's time of 44:24. I was 19th overall male, and 4th in my age group. I missed an age group award by a mere 31 seconds. grrrrr....

In the full marathon, 6 loops around the same course, I finished in 4:51:32, which is a Groundhog course PR by about 90 minutes. Last year, the course was a snowy mess. I missed an overall marathon personal record by less than 2 minutes.

Also... if any of you are considering a marathon, a burger, fries, and 2 beers were not enough to fill me up when I was done yesterday.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

Losing between 0.5 and 1lb per week since start of the new year. Haven't done much on increasing actual exercise - more just insuring that I focus on 10,000 steps a day and doing stretches, squats, and lifts when able. Have trimmed any remaining processed food from my diet -- salads, veggies, meat/eggs, and homemade whole wheat bread. This month (february) will start more exercise focused stuff. I will say that I felt horrible after the holidays (tired and sick) and that the shift in diet has certainly made me feel better. Now, I just need that extra kick in the pants to exercise on my days off (I'm very active at work-- lift patients every 2 hours, walking at least 10,000 steps a shift) -- working nights means my motivations is low on non-work days.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

Trying to cut down on sugar - starting with sugary snacks. Cutting fat or calories is one thing, but eating less sugar is very, very hard. For meals, I don't really eat processed food with added sugar, but snacks are a different story. Trying to add more calories to meals, and use fewer on snacks.

And of course, all I can think of is this Simpsons episode.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

My trick has always been replacing the sugar with flavor. Instead of cookies or, well, any real sugary snack, try something like roasted nuts. Or better yet, nuts with some added flavors like something spicy.

My problem always is that I am a picky eater. I can't do something healthy like just straight up baby carrots or snap peas like a lot of people. It's just gross tasting.

If I have to have sugars, I try to make them complex carbs. Something like a clif bar high in protein. It's mostly oats and whatnot.

Which is another thing. I've even taken steel cut oats and mixed in a couple chocolate chips and eaten them raw.

I always try to do one of two things when I eat a snack and need to compromise. Slightly fattier but no sugars. Or some sugar but no fat.
