Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Speaking of running injuries...

Had a stress fracture in shin over the winter... got back to running on grass in spring, then felt pain in the site again so shut it back down...

Last week I went to a store called Endurance House where they filmed me running and made suggestions based upon that and what I told them of my injury.

The guy spent an hour with me while I tried on different shoes and different support types. Was great customer service and is their m.o. according to a couple of people who told me to go there.

Ended up going with a flat with good cushion and a supportive insert.

Two runs and so far, so good. Wouldn't expect a problem to crop up immediately though, so we'll see how the next few go.

Happy to be back at it though as running has been the only thing that has helped my waistline - which isn't bad, but I want that six pack!

Still lifting on a regular basis and taking a Whey supplement. Starting to "see" slight results to go along with the incremental increases that I'm seeing in poundage.

Six pack? I thought you were more of a rum guy? ;)

Good luck!

A six pack may not happen again is this lifetime, but I'm not too far off, or maybe I should say, I've been much further away.

I could get there, but there is a limit to how much I want to work out and how much I want to change my diet and those limits are probably a bit short of the six pack.

Plus... I'm 45, so who the hell cares? The wife certainly doesn't.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

I did something to my elbow after going back to lifting weights. Been almost over a month, still sore. I haven't gone to the doctor, or stopped playing hockey, and it hasn't really gotten better (surprise :p). I bought one of those braces for tennis elbow, so I'm hoping that helps (it has, so far). Haven't gone to the gym in a few weeks, since lifting and kickboxing are no fun with a bum elbow. One of my friends told me she had tendonitis in her elbow for 8 months, so I'm really hoping it goes away soon.

unrelated, my brain is fine. :)

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Any advice for dealing with tight calves during running? I know it's going to happen, but they feel so lousy when I do. Thanks.

Get in the habit of stretching them both before and after you run. For a while you won't notice much change, but they should loosen up over time. You may also want to check your water intake as tight muscles can be a sign of dehydtration.

With breaking a toe while running, the doctor gave me a strap-on boot so that I don't put any pressure on my toe. I have to wear this boot for 4-6 weeks, instead of going easy for 4 months (unfeasible as it would've meant no hockey, too). With the special boot, however, it does force me to stretch my left calf muscle to the point that a yoga instructor would be jealous as I walk around the office.

Consider a foam roller too.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Tri Del Sol sprint: swim sucked, killed it on the bike, but as I took my helmet off, put on my running fuel belt, and started to run. a storm cloud appeared overhead. I literally took no more than 3 steps into the run portion, a volunteer halted me and told me the remainder of the race was cancelled due to the impending storm.

So, I did not finish, but still received a medal because of the circumstances. Sucks, because I felt I was headed for a PR. I spent far less time in the transitions and I killed it on the bike, and would love to have seen what would have happened in the run.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

So I starting a new thing of walking and running on the treadmill. Walk for 2 minutes, run for a minute. Repeat for 20+ minutes. Working my way up to start running more. I do have to say that I did get a better workout with that combo instead of some preset program on the machine.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Been a while since I checked in... updates:
1. Was up to a good 5 mile run and I went back out the next day and everything from the knees on down felt not good (this was less muscle and more bone aches). It persisted for a few days (weird) and I shut it down.
2. Ran a 5K with limited practice because of #1. Beat my time from last year but not what I would have expected had I not shut down for a few weeks.
3. Kept getting hit with slapshots, and took a bad one on the knee that put me out another two weeks (upgraded from very good shinpads to top of the line)
4. Back at it finally this week and put in 3.1m the other night with decent pace.
5. Signed up for the BAA half marathon on October 11th (peer pressure from co-worker). No looking back.

Just hoping I stop blocking slapshots, that is probably my biggest issue at this point.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Forgot to post my 5K time from Sunday. It was 34:25, but it was super humid. Got another one Sept. 12 that I think the weather might be better for. Did finish third in my division and beat a couple of other people, so I'm proud of that.

Third? Means you got a medal! :)

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Therapy is going well. I have a long list of stretches to do for my back, and on top of that, they hook me up to an e-stim machine with a heat pack.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Did the MN inline half marathon this morning. Finished in 1:01, which I'm happy with though just missed my 'A' goal of finishing in under an hour. Mile 9 killed me - was over a 6:00 pace for that hill when every other mile was in the fours. Time to get prepping for the full marathon in Duluth in 6 weeks.

Wife did the half marathon run in 1:40 and change, just missing her 'A' goal by under a minute.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Hit a new personal goal today. Walked for 2 minutes, run for 2 minutes. Did that for 24 minutes today. I am slowing working at it, but someday I will be able to run a full 30 minutes.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Soon enough, you'll enter a 5K.

We shall see...

The downside of running: my legs are hurting today along with heat rash. I think (the heat rash yes) due to the amount of impact between me and the treadmill. The shoes I use are designated for track and trails. I am going to stop by a local running store to see if I can get a custom shoe for treadmill only. I am also looking at getting a community ed pass to use a high school track that I pass on the way home from work so I can still use my current shoes.
