Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

I think you need to reread what I actually said.

I've cut my gluten down in support of my wife, who has PCOS. That disease causes more problems the more gluten a person consumes. I've not completely given them up, but I'm doing it for her in a quest for a baby.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Yes, I avoid most of whats called a standard american diet or SAD. Ulcerative Colitis is the reason. The idea is colitis is a immune reaction to over growth of certain kinds of bacteria. The body sees them as invaders and the immune system goes wild. The diet(as shown in a recent study by Rush University) improves the diversity of bacteria in the gut. Google SCD if you want to read about the diet. Its not easy but being in the hospital is far worse as is taking immune killing drugs.

Good for you. Has it helped? My wife is very well read on this stuff because of her issues, and her "holistic" MD has educated her a lot about how to feel better. It's done good things for her, but still some fine-tuning for her thyroid disorder (another thing that seems to be becoming more common esp. among women). On this Whole30 we are off all sweeteners, grains, etc. for a month. We also do some culturing and fermenting at home for the gut issues, have been making yogurt, viili (Finnish yogurt), and kombucha. I've been trying some kimchi-style pickling, my results weren't that good but next summer I hope the garden will give me more quantity of produce to experiment with than our cold 2014 summer did.

The trouble with the gluten-free "fad" (interpreting it as a weight-loss or general health diet) is the same as with essential oils. The "cure-all" converts are so evangelistic about spreading the gospel of the fad that everyone gets tired of hearing about it and the very real benefits to those people who could use them are lost in the noise. You end up with almost justified rants like the article posted earlier that take opposition to the extreme.

I'm on no drugs, my blood work is normal so yeah its helped. 4 years ago I was a basket case. I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without sitting down at the top. Drugs got me out of the funk but drugs in my case were very nasty, biologics, so I wanted off them. I'm now used to doing it so not that big a deal. I make my own yogurt also, I ferment it 24 hrs to there is no lactose left. I've also fermented pickles, Sour kraut
Even fermented my own mayo. Lots of folks doing scd with thyroid issues. She should Google it for sure. Lots of groups, facebook, yahoo etc. If interested I'll post some links

You're right, but those conditions fall on a very wide spectrum from mild sensitivity to life-threatening allergy.

This is very true. I have a sensativity to eggs. For example I can eat a piece of cake that has an egg in the batter so it's very diluted. But I cannot eat a whole egg. I even tried to eat just egg whites as I read that the yolk is what makes most people react poorly. That didn't work either. So I just avoid them.

My wife cannot eat too many strawberries or food with strawberries in it. One strawberry and she is fine. Three strawberries and the inside of her mouth breaks out in small sores almost like a rash.

For some odd reason she was skeptical about "a guy named walrus on the internet" but we did find a summary of the diet and she was intriqued. Her Dr. has been pointing her at "Whole30 Autoimmune Protocol" but with nuts being her main snack it would take some getting used to.

I get a temporary rash like this on the back of my tongue (very mild reaction) whenever I have either alfalfa sprouts or something unknown that is in most taco meat seasoning mixes; just those two things...

Here is what you said on GPL:

Generally speaking, I dismiss any vegan or any person who chooses to go gluten-free. Especially the gluten ones. If you don't have a gluten allergy, there is absolutely no medical or nutritional reason to avoid gluten. It's complete nonsense

Wow, way to dig up something from a year and a half ago, put it in out of context, ignore what I actually said (again), remove the emphasis, and continue to ignore what I've said in this forum. You really have a way with that. Dishonest.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Weight loss is simply a function of calories in vs. calories out. You want to lose weight, either cut your intake or increase your output, or both. You don't have to go on a fad diet if your goal is simply to lose weight.

Health and nutritional needs are separate issues. Too much gluten, like pretty much everything else, is going to be bad for anyone. But there's no point in avoiding it completely unless you actually have a negative reaction to it.

Likewise, I don't understand dropping all dairy unless you're lactose intolerant. I'm not saying you should be chugging a gallon of milk each day, but I don't think a single glass is going to ruin a diet.

That is what you ACTUALLY said. *** context? Sorry about the date, I remembered seeing you pontificate about something you are not qualified to comment on (something you really have a way with:p) and did quick search on GPL. Sorry, somehow the emphasis got dropped when I copy pasted from GPL, so you bolded and underlined "chooses," not sure how that changes the meaning. And you pointed to the Deadspin article that ridiculed anyone who chooses to avoid gluten.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Wait... so we can't pull people's comments out of context on here anymore?

No point in ever going to the D-1 side...

:p

Smart women :)
Here is where she should start reading on it so she doesn't have to believe a guy named walrus on the internet
http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Vici...29&sr=1-1&keywords=breaking+the+vicious+cycle
out of print at the moment but maybe she can find it at a library

2nd place to learn is
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/BTVC-SCD/info
Its a list serve, lots of good info, especially from some of the older members, I'd get a yahoo email acct and ask to join. You'll get quite a few emails so I wouldn't use my regular email for it.
3rd place to learn is
https://www.facebook.com/groups/2215406763/
not sure if this link works but search face book for SCD groups and it should come up. Lots of good info here also, just have to read for awhile to figure out who knows something who is a newbie. I figured it out and so can she.

Here is the official website of SCD
http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

On the facebook page or on the yahoo group she can ask questions specifically about her issues. Hopefully their will be folks who can relate and will chime in.

The diet requires fanatical adherence, foods that are illegal are everywhere in SAD. Remember food manufacturers don't have to list ingredients that are less than 2% of total content of can or pkg etc.

I read the Sci Babe, and she makes the following point:

http://www.scibabe.com/bull****proof/
It’s a weird diet trend. But with a few exceptions it’s a safe, albeit rather ineffective, diet if you’re going on it arbitrarily. So then why do I give a **** what people choose not to put into their body? Because (1) you know I can’t lay off bull**** and (2) a lot of people go into restaurants saying they’re “gluten free” lately. Some irrational bloggers even tell people to lie that they have allergies to avoid certain ingredients.

This can affect me.

When someone with an actual wheat allergy or celiac disease goes into a restaurant and says they have an allergy, do you think the chefs and waitstaff are more or less likely to take us seriously after they’ve dealt with twenty fakers in a row?

You’d be wrong if you guessed ‘more.’ And I’ve had contaminated food before. I’m definitely not the only one. This is a diet for people with a medical condition.

Gluten is not bad for you just because it’s a component in lot of things that have calories. It’s also not bad for you, someone without celiac disease, just because it’s bad for someone else. Cutting out gluten from your diet because it’s bad for people with celiac disease would be like cutting out peanuts because it’s bad for people with a peanut allergy. You can relax and enjoy the sticky buns from Flour in Cambridge, MA that I miss so **** much.

Another form of "woo" that I've encountered is that of the detox. We're not talking cleanses like the Whole30, we're talking the lemon juice and cayenne, OMG-this-will-make-you-sick variety. And yet, even though they're dangerous and unnecessary, I have Beachbody, Melaleuca, and Isagenix representatives in my news feed telling me "you need OUR detox to feel better."

These representatives are not interested in health, they're interested in creating customers and dependents for life. In the words of PT Barnum, "There's a sucker born every minute."

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

If memory serves correctly, someone several pages ago posted a question along the lines of "anyone know how to make 'reduced portions' program work?"

Someone told me just to put my fork down between every bite.

That works amazingly well.

Apparently, we "get" full about ten minutes before we "feel" full, so that if you consume the smaller portion over a longer period of time, that somehow helps us feel satisfied with less.

I don't know if I buy the "explanation" as given, empirically speaking though the technique is marvelous. Not only am I satisfied with the smaller size servings when done eating, I notice the taste and the texture of the food more, and mealtime conversations are a bit more pleasant as well.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

We are starting a weight loss challenge in my office today. I fully intend to win this thing. I am at ~180-185 and 15-20 lbs over my ideal weight. My target will be 10 lbs but I expect to beat that in the 12 weeks of the challenge. Will up my exercise as much as is practical given the (slow) progress of my replaced ankle joint and clean up my diet. Huge cut in sugar consumption and reduce carbs somewhat along with portion control are planned. I just don't see anyone else in our office being serious enough for long enough to beat me.

Having conversation with a meal also helps. You put the fork down, you talk to the person across from you, and the feeling of full arrives.
