Firefox 4

Dude Love

Little Ball of Hate
Anyone else using this big POS? First, it's slow as balls. Second, they spread out the Back/Forward buttons, the Refresh/Stop button (now one button instead of two), and the Home button all the way across the toolbar. Duh...why would I want all the buttons I use to be in the same area of the screen? Third, there's no more dropdown menu next to the Back button....so now you can't go back multiple pages at once. It's like they let someone who's never used the internet before design their toolbar.

Re: Firefox 4

Assuming it's like Chrome (which is where they seemed to get a lot of their "improvements" from), you should be able to click and hold the back button to get a drop down menu of recent pages.

EDIT: Also, if you go to view, toolbars, customize, you can click and drag the stop/refresh and home buttons to wherever you want them.

Welcome to the future.

As of Office 2007 it became obvious UI designers have human factors somewhere below navel lint on their priority list. I'm sure some 22 year old thought it looked cool. Ef the 500 million legacy users.

Well done. None of that was in their wacky "tutorial." :)

Re: Firefox 4

This is what all the delay was about? FF4 has been in the works for forever. Not sure what I was expecting -- maybe there are more changes under the hood.

Actually, I think the majority of Firefox's innovations come from Opera (tabs, Firefox button, paste-and-go, etc)

Yeah, but once you get used to 2007, it's much more intuitive and quicker. Like using your mouse wheel on the ribbon to scroll through the tabs. I can use 2007 3x-4x faster than 2003. File menus are a terrible way to organize commands since the human mind should be able to recognize visual cues much better than ones based on words.

I hated it at first, but realized it was much better after a few months of using it. I would never go back.

Yeah, Adobe took major steps backwards as well this year. Adobe X is on par with Adobe 6.0 with how much fail it embodies.

What I don't get is how that small 15-pixel wide arrow missing provides any extra usable space. It seems like it was hardly a waist of space. I use it all the time.

Who HASN'T known how to move the icons around where you want them? I've been doing that every version since 2.0.

And I figured out how to find the history right away when I was frustrated the down arrow was gone, and click and held onto the button to see if that did it.

It is true what they say, make it idiot proof, and they'll make a better idiot. ;)

Re: Firefox 4

Firefox 4 has been a hit-and-miss experience... took me awhile to find things I already had... seems marginally faster.... I remember when Firefox first came out and the whole thing was about speed... miss that to a good degree.

As for Office 2007... still not "intuitive" to me... give me the old menu system any day of the week please.

Re: Firefox 4

I was a Firefox fan for a long time. About six months ago I switched to Chrome and since then FF has felt like a lead brick.

Has Chrome fixed their bugs? I loved it at first, but too many hangups because it was so new.

Works great for me. Fast, stable and secure. It's nice in that each tab is its own process so in the rare case one crashes, it usually doesn't bring down the whole browser. Chrome actually crashed on me about 10 minutes ago, but I can't even remember the time before that when it crashed.

The add-ons aren't quite as robust as FF. Chrome has the basics, AdBlock (if you like that), and a force https one (useful for facebook). I haven't dug through the add-ons too much since I think they bog things down.

I have heard from some pretty reliable hard-core computer science people that Chrome >> FF when it comes to security as well.

Edit: Google made a browser for a reason. I expect it to be fast and loose with personal information. There's an add-on for Chrome that excludes you from Google Analytics, which I recommend downloading. Other browsers probably behave the same way too, but at least Chrome has that add-on.

Yeah, I loved Chrome's layout, look, user-friendliness. But it did have hitches, so I ditched it for the then-reputable Firefox.

If Chrome can keep my ad-free add on, and my Facebook Purity (greasemonkey) add-on, then it looks like I'm switching back to Chrome tomorrow.

Edit: good to know about the Analytics.

Re: Firefox 4

Reading on Mozilla's site, it looks like a lot of people are having the same problem I am: freezing and crashing on sites that use Flashplayer (YouTube, Dailymotion, and of course ESPN3.com). I figure they'll fix this soon.

Re: Firefox 4

i have a running insecurity about google tracking and compiling information so i don't like to put too many eggs in one basket... have they made any assurances as to what they do with browsing data?

Re: Firefox 4

On of the things I really like about FF, not necessarily this version, is its ability to use NoScript. Scripting "drive-bys" on certain sites are an increasing source of malware. If Chrome had a similar feature, I'd be more inclined to use it. As for your browsing habits, Google has a number of privacy policies ... ;)

Re: Firefox 4

Can't say I'm real excited about FF4. Maybe I'll get used to it, but initially I'm not a big fan of having all the tabs at the very top, above the menu bar, etc. Seems out of the way up there, and I haven't seen a way to move them down below.
