Fire red!!

Isn't Guite currently the lead recruiter? I mean, fine if you guys want him, but he wouldn't be anywhere close to the top of my list if I were a UMaine fan, and wanted to jumpstart the program.

Personally, I'd recommend driving the Bangor Brinks truck down to Providence with the school president, and make Walshy's former volunteer assistant an offer he can't refuse ...

Who would be at the top of your list, or even on your list? I like what he has done recruiting, but a lot of the better guys arent in college yet. He's young, played at Maine, won a national championship, and played a couple hundred games in the NHL. I'm not sure there are a lot of other people who can match that. I think it's important that whoever gets hired genuinely wants to be in the Bangor area, even if they don't necessarily have ties to Maine. It isn't everyone's cup of tea.

There might have been a slim chance of that happening a few years ago but I don't think there is any now.

You gotta ask him though, don't you? No matter how big PC Hockey might get in the coming years, it's unlikely they're ever going to overtake PC Hoops, unless and until PC Hockey starts to play their home games in the Civic Center.

He's already moved from one D-1 program he was building into a national power to do the same at another, why not try to draw him back to where it started for him, where he would have the chance to be the biggest thing to hit the Downeast since Hurricane Walshy? I wish UNH had the intestinal fortitude to make a similar pitch, but (apparently like UMaine) we are instead destined to hand the program to an untested alum from the "glory days" with no established D-1 coaching track record to speak of.

Also keep in mind the current legendary BC head coach won his first D-1 title elsewhere, and he was 50 years old before he answered the call to come home.

You really gotta ask him, don't you?? If you don't at least ask ... are you *really* trying to get the best available candidate?

You forgot the best one, Michel. I think Gibson, Perez, and Robbins will all come good. I've watched Rai in warmups and he can really shoot it. Larry mentioned the other night that he has been tentative because of his concussion issues. If he gets bigger and gets his confidence back I think he would be the best of the bunch. Becker is a D1 player but not a whole lot more. I agree on Muelbauer. I can't see any of those guys leaving early and I think they are a good foundation. I know there are a lot of people who want some sort of quick fix but that isn't reality.
Watch tegeler in warm ups, he can shoot it also. How's that work out for us?

I didn't forget michel, too many penalties, out of position

Those are all good points. Success in Orono would probably be sweeter than success in Providence. Other than one of the Alfonds I'm not sure if there are any other supporters that have the money to make it happen though.

If they can't get Leaman, who else is there?

It's a good point Drew. The big $$ supporters have all gone away. Why?? Lack of progress by the program and lack of having any influence. And pure lack of respect by the admin for the people that put Maine hockey on the map. You're not gonna grab an existing D1 coach esp if they are having success where they are. It has to be the next prodigy. He's out there. Question is who is he?

They all think Maine is going to find the next Walsh, even though that was a once in a lifetime opportunity. At this point I think Maine needs someone with a proven track record.

Re: Fire red!!

You fire Red and everyone else but money is real issue at UMaine. Folks who live in So. Maine don't understand how bad the economy is up here. Portland area is doing OK, every place north of Brunswick is dying.(exception being rte 1 corridor). Fund the program like everyone else in HE and see what happens.

Hey Chuck

When Jerry retires, do you think they'll hand the reigns to a non Eagle?

Sometimes you have to break the paradigm.

I don't know why an established coach would want to take on a struggling program. That being said absolutely there are many qualified people out there who would jump at the chance to take on a storied program like Maine. From what I gather seems like this is a multi faceted issue not solely a coaching problem.

Geeze Chuck thought you wanted a younger up and coming coach surely you didn't expect Norm Bazin to walk through the door now did you? 😉 Of course it will be a couple of seasons before we have Souza on board (hopefully) but I can already see his influence (our power play for instance) and I like what I see. And the fact that he's an alumni at least in my perspective is even better. But oops this is a UMaine board...😂

Answer to the first part is easy - ego. PLUS he was a VA for Walshy with the (*non-asterisk) '99 NC team.

Usually when any program is headed in UMaine's direction, it is a multi-faceted problem. And I'm pretty sure Leaman wouldn't be seeing anything in Orono he hasn't already encountered in Providence or Schenectady.

If someone gave me a choice between Coach Bazin and Coach Souza to lead the UNH program post-Umile, that would take me about 5 seconds (tops) to make that decision ... and it wouldn't be for the UNH alum (who has been on the staff for - what - 6 or so months, and has yet to really produce anything on the recruiting trails). Guys who handle PP and PK units are almost by definition assistant coaches.

But unlike Leaman, Bazin doesn't have a past history at UNH, so there isn't anything compelling there (right now anyway) that he already doesn't have at his alma mater.

Agreed. Ironically, IF there was a "next Walshy", it may arguably already be the guy we're talking about at PC.

Finding the "next" one before he achieves something at this level is a "needle in the haystack" proposition ...

Leaman already said he was staying at pc, I think he was approached in the search

Chuckie, I get your sarcasm. I would add that first, that's a waste of gas money even though regular is $2.09 a gallon. You have a better chance of waking up a busty blonde tomorrow than Leaman leaving PC. Second, bringing the school president in the Brinks would seal Lehman staying at PC. You may not even know who she is. Susan Hunter. Right after she took over, the Lomberg fit hit the shan. Now what do you think the politically correct female president was going to do with that mess, her first disciplinary situation she faced ? Correct ... Game misconduct, career misconduct, you're out of here Ryan. Even though IMHO his behavior wasn't even close to earning him a size 10 in the arse. One would think what Ms Hunter knows about hockey would not fill half a thimble. She knows it's a huge expense and she knows it no longer brings in revenue to the university. A hungry smart young coach will not command $ 200,000+ a year.

I'll throw out a name, how about Tyler Walsh? He's only a few years younger than when Shawn took over and if nothing else would generate a lot of excitement. Thoughts?

I like the train of thought. At this point I think you need to take a chance on someone unproven and young. Why not? It certainly can't get much worse.

He could be down the line...he has stated before he wants to Coach College Hockey...

Two quick points - one, I'm not (really) being (too) sarcastic here ... and two, you aren't likely to get your program turned around in the right direction on the cheap. Especially with those gas money savings. :p ;)

I've conceded either here or on the other thread that Leaman isn't likely going to want to come back now. But he is someone I'd treat as a long-term possibility, with a watching brief to see how he is treated down at Providence. Keep in mind, he's never likely going to be the superstar of the PC Athletics world unless and until (1) PC Hoops tanks it beyond belief, and (2) PC Hockey starts playing their home games at the Civic Center. Otherwise, he might as well be the PC Men's Lacrosse head coach, because the profile isn't much different.

Maybe that's not important to him ... now. Or ever. But things change sometimes.

You are aware that Coach York won his first D-1 title FAR removed from BC, and only came back to Chestnut Hill (age 50) after spending the first 20 or so years of his career at Clarkson and Bowling Green, right?

Re: Fire red!!

ck1969, I am as pist and frustrated as you are, possibly more, but this thread and sentiment has lost its steam for the moment. The two non-league losses to UNH were infuriating and embarrassing.
