Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

Sucks I won't be at the games this weekend! I'm deer hunting in Pennsylvania. I hope the Nooks play well, and sweep the seris. I'll have to check in from time to time to get the scores. GO NOOKS!

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

With an empty netter, Alaska held on Friday night to beat Ferris 3-1. Both teams played well for the most part and the game could have gone either way. Both teams skated hard, played aggressive defense, and had solid goaltending. Special teams proved to be the difference. The Nooks were 2 for 4 on the PP, and the PK killed off all 5 Bulldog man advantages. Back to back Ferris penalties, including a five minute major gave the Nooks a full two minute 5-3. They failed to convert with two men up, but were fortunate to get one as time was running out on the 5 on 4.

A few copyrighted pics from Friday nights game.

The Nooks had to circle the wagons at times to help out Scott Greenham....

But the Bulldogs often found themselves facing the same struggles...

The Nooks faced more than one close call, but Greenham’s glove was up to the task...

Taylor Nelson for Ferris was equally up to the task on most occasions...

But Aaron Gens’ second period PP goal proved to be the game winner...

Greenham and team defense were able to hang on for the win.

Tomorrow should be another good matchup, and anyone's game.

...And the University has requested that I direct you to visit the UAF web site for higher quality and official pics of Nanook Hockey and other Nanook athletic teams.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

The major to Alexander was likely the difference. As I stated in the Ferris thread, you cannot give a good team a 5 minute power play and not expect to pay for it. UA got the game winner at the end of that major.

It's hard to play hockey with your head up your ***.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

I hold myself personally accountable for that Ferris State goal. I'd just mentioned to a friend that the Nooks had neither scored nor given up a goal in the first period so far this season, and not five seconds later, FSU scored :p At least I learned from my mistake and didn't mention that they've been perfect on the PK ;)

Good to see the PP putting pucks in the net. I thought at times on that five minute major and full 2 minute 5 on 3 that they seemed to have a hard time getting anything going, but they found a way to finish so I'll take it. Also good to see Nik Yaremchuk get a goal with his parents there for parent weekend.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

I thought the game wasn't as close as the score. Ferris' only goal came when our player lost a edge and turned over the puck, then all the D-men miss played and dove at the shot, which Greenham blocked but left only bulldogs on there skates to flip in the puck that was laying in the crease.
Dion was on a tear in the second b4 the major, then the whole team went out of attack mode and into siege mode (wait for them to run out of food and water).

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

I thought the momentum ebbed and flowed a bit. We looked tired for a while in the third, but then again, Ferris was only down a goal and trying hard for the equalizer. And I think it was at the beginning of the third that the game went 6 minutes without a whistle. All the aisles were backed up with folks trying to get back to their seats. Funny.

You can’t argue with the success of our PK, but we’ve also been very lucky. Ferris had a number of good chances on their PPs but didn’t convert.

I agree about Ferris’s goal. That was their best chance to that point and they converted. You could see the play fall apart for us. We gave up an odd-man rush, still had time to regroup but messed it up, and then lost an edge down low too, leaving a couple Bulldogs on the doorstep.

But we didn’t exactly have a cornucopia of quality scoring chances either. It was a good defensive match-up. The 5 minute major was unfortunate for Ferris, and ended up being a factor. But overall the teams stayed focused on the game. Both teams represented well.

But enough of the nice stuff, lets kick some Bulldog butt tonight and go for all six points. :)

Go Nooks !

You can say that, but then I can come back and say, Alaska scored with 1 second left in the first that should not have happened. Alexander should not have got a 5 minute checking from behind call and a game misconduct to put the 'Nooks on a 5 minute power play. So Alaska shouldn't have scored on that either. And then the empty net with 8 seconds left in the game shouldn't count either.

Losing an edge in a game is apart of the game.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

The most encouraging thing, to me, was the great play by all the guys who didn't get points by their names. Klassen was incredible on the faceoffs -- 11 to 4, I believe. Bryant Molle deserved loud cheers for the way he kept pucks from getting to Greenham. Ron Meyers zipped all over the ice, putting pressure on everyone. Honestly, I think that every Nanook out there made me say "wow" at some point during the game.

The most discouraging thing, IMO, was the team's inability to score in two minutes of 5 on 3. Not to mention that during one of the early PPs, the Nanooks looked like they were playing in slow motion. But Coach Meisner seemed pretty happy with special teams, so I'll try not to worry.

Ferris State fought hard, and I agree that the game could have gone either way. We should see a great battle tonight.

And MMF, I love your photos.

Thanks. I'm trying to be respectful of University wishes and trying not to step on any toes. I only do this for enjoyment, mine and hopefully others.

I think Ferris played a really good game and should give Alaska a handful tonight. I watched the check from behind and as hockey has focused on head injuries in years past it shouldn't be tolerated this year. If it was a Ferris St. player checked from behind you'd be crying bloody murder if there was no call, not to metion if a student athlete get hurt. The check from behind I can over look at times, but not agaist the boards.

As a Nook fan I can say at times we looked very good, but the flow wasn't there all the time. When ALASKA was playing hard Ferris St. had a tough time. Should be a real good game tonight. Ohh, and Alaska didn't score on the 5 minute!

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

Thanks for the pics. I hadn't seen the new away jerseys yet. I really like them. I gotta get to an away game to see them in person (Lawson here we come).

Glad to hear that it was a good game. I really think Alaska will be a contender this year and it's nice to see that the Bulldogs can hang with them. Hopefully more even strength play tonight.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

Welcome to the forum paddle2me. We can always use more Nook fans.

I don’t think FerrisStateHockeyFan was arguing any calls, just saying that “crap” happens and is just part of the game and not an excuse for anything. And then he noted the “crap” that happened to Ferris last night. Loosing edge was just one of our “crap” happens moments. I thought it was a fairly even game.

I see ½Nook beat me to it. Ferris took a 5 minute major and then a 2 minute minor giving the Nooks a 5 on 3. The two minute minor expired, but the Nooks scored on the PP before the 5 minute major expired. Thus scoring during the 5 minute major with a man advantage.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

I suspect Hohligan will be sitting next weekend. He was a little to out of control this weekend.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

I will agree....
Ryan seams to go to the box at least once every game he plays.
I believe he was in the box on all three of Ferris States goals this weekend.

Re: Ferris State @ Alaska, Oct. 30 &31

Yea, a player getting the occasional penalty due to hard aggressive play is one thing, but the contact to the head stuff or the away from the play stuff just can’t happen. There were 4 PP goals Saturday night. Unnecessary stuff can just be too costly.

Other than Ferris’s cfb Friday night, the teams did a decent good job avoiding the junk stuff. Chupp’s penalty last night with about two minutes left could have cost Ferris the game in regulation, and was totally unnecessary. The Bulldog fan base would have had more fuel to the fire for their penalty box woes.

Anyway, this was a hard fought series and maybe the Bulldogs deserved better. As soon as the CCHA starts giving more than just a measly 6 points for a weekend series, maybe there will be a way to walk away with some of those. :)

Good luck Bulldogs the rest of the year. We’ll be rooting for you against other CCHA foe, especially the evil empire(s). ;)
