Female players by state versus college hockey options

Gameworn that is an awesome list. The # that sticks out to me the most is that only 30 Canadiens play D3. I guess our friends from the North will play college hockey in the US if it is free but don't like to pay for D3 (I don't either).

Not sure that's true as most of the top mens DIII teams are mostly Canadian....

A quicl look of the Big 3 (Norwich, Elmira, Plattsburgh) in womens show 57% of the team is NOT American.....so of the non american players, most go to your top DIII schools.....

I wouldn't say that that is true at all as the typical costs for a D1 player are probably comparable to those of a D3 player. The aid packages can bring school costs down to a comparable level to that of a partial scholly very easily.

I would say that it has more to do with them choosing to stay in Canada and play CIS over D3. The hockey is comparable and the costs in Canada are equal to or less then what they would be to play in the States.

The Canadians at UWS have decline a little. They used to make up about half, it's now down to about a third. The decline is more prevalent on the men's side. I looked at 04 season the men's team had 22/29 from Canada. This year I counted 5 or 6. Is it that the talent level of US players is goin up enough to match Canadian talent?

Your statement that only 30 Canadiens play D3 is misleading. Pretty sure there are many more than that. The combined rosters of Plattsburgh and Norwich alone list 25 Canadians on them. Pretty sure the numbers posted by Gameworn14 represent the current Rookie crop, not the complete list of D3 players.

And as someone already stated, Canadians have good options back home. CIS hockey is on average of higher caliber than D3 hockey.

Is it just the rookies? I thought 30 was low. Does Canada's dolloar come into play here? CIS schools play D1 US Schools, wouldn't they be more like D1 than D3?

I think that the NCAA is moving into Canada? If so, that would really change the picture. Probably 10 years away.

The list was just freshmen, I looked at all posted rosters the NESCAC and Plymouth State were not listed as of Oct-30.
I went by the home town of each player. I also did not include Franklin Pierce as they are listed as D II.
Canadians listed by conference were Independent = 1, ECAC East = 5, ECAC West= 19 (Neumann has 9), NCHA = 5.
I could be off by 1 or 2 as I looked at many teams pages but, I believe this to be close.

Pretty sure Rookies only. Total list was 335 players. Smear that over about 50 teams, that is 7 players per team. Sounds about right for an average rookie class.

I thought 30 was low.

Extrapolate 30 players over 4 years and you got 120 Canucks in D3. There are about 350 Canucks playing in D1 and about 750 Canucks in the CIS.

Does Canada's dolloar come into play here?

It is always a factor. Right now dollar is on Par, has been for the last 4 years, give or take 5%.

CIS schools play D1 US Schools, wouldn't they be more like D1 than D3?

Some Top CIS schools play D1 schools and tend to lose by a goal or two. Mc Gill was about 500 in the past, but this year they are 0-6 vs NCAA D1 teams. Overall the top CIS schools are equivalent to Mid to Low D1 and better than high end D3. Most mid pack CIS schools would be upper half D3 schools. Parity in CIS is much closer than parity in D3. D3 has a much wider range of caliber between top and bottom.

There has been talk in recent years of schools like McGill and Simon Fraser joining the NCAA. Simon Fraser is already playing in the NAIA for certain sports. However, the CIS brass is trying to kibosh that with threats of all or nothing against schools that want to move some sports.

Last year RIT(top of D3) beat Sir WIlfred Laurier(one of the top CIS teams) 4-0 or something. I'd say CIS is closer to D3 level, but the weak CIS teams are better than the weak D3 teams.

This is a quick view of hockey-playing girls & women by state, versus D1 programs within that state. I'm well aware that the rosters don't respect state or national boundaries. Nonetheless, I thought this would be interesting. Would be interesting to take a similar look at D3 programs by state.

First column = state
Second column = Female USA Hockey registrants (all age groups)

None of the remaining states have D1 programs.

Looking at the D1 programs per 1000 female players, MN, MA, and WI are relatively under-served compared to other states where D1 programs exist. But all have good D3 opportunities available.

MI & IL stick out. Several states have D1 programs, despite less female hockey participation.

Tougher case for CO, AK, and CA given both lower numbers and geographic isolation relative to the main hockey centers in the US.

Interesting.... However, your title should read D1 options. Nice work.

I know the U of MN recruits Minny girls first. What about the other similar state schools, do they also recruit from with in their home state first? (Wisconsin, N.Dakota, Ohio, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, UConn,) Am I missing any others?

As coach of the Golden Gophers, Brooks firmly believed that Minnesotans should make up the vast majority of players on the U of M roster. In fact, during his seven-year career at Minnesota, only two non-Minnesota natives lettered for the Gophers – James Gambucci (a player not recruited by Brooks) and James McCoy (who played three varsity games).

It was a system Brooks learned from his mentor and former coach at the University of Minnesota, John Mariucci.

Known as the godfather of hockey in Minnesota, Mariucci is largely credited with helping to establish the community-based system of hockey in this state.

After his professional playing career ended, Mariucci took the reins at the U of M, instituting a system of relying on home-grown players to fill the Gopher roster. In 12 seasons behind the bench, only six non-Minnesotans lettered for Mariucci’s teams.

“This is a state institution and should be represented by Minnesota boys,” Mariucci said. “If they’re not quite as good as some Canadians, we’ll just have to work a little harder, that’s all.”

His reliance on the Minnesota player was a major reason the game grew in his home state faster than anywhere else in the United States. A good indication of hockey’s growing popularity during Mariucci’s reign is how much the high school tournament grew. Attendance at the tournament increased from 15,523 in 1952 to 46,016 in 1966.

Recruiting Minnesotans to become Gophers shaped the way amateur hockey is organized today in Minnesota.

Mariucci envisioned a model whereby the youth hockey programs would feed their local high school teams, followed by high school hockey programs feeding the University of Minnesota (and later Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State, Minnesota State and Bemidji State).

It is this community-based system that Minnesota employs and enjoys today. And it’s almost exclusive to this state. For much of the rest of the country, amateur hockey is a club-based sport. You don’t play for your city. You play for a for-profit organization.
