Federal Judge Says Cheerleading Not a Sport

Re: Federal Judge Says Cheerleading Not a Sport

I'm sure the motives for getting involved in cheerleading do vary quite a bit, depending on the individual. I'm certainly no expert, but I would hazard to guess that some of these (in no particular order) might include things like:

It's a fun way to get some exercise;
Wanting to show some good old school spirit;
Enjoying performing and 'being noticed' in front of an admiring crowd;
Becoming 'more popular' with your classmates;
And maybe for a few using it as a way to 'connect' with good-looking athletes...
Not that long ago, cheerleading and some variation of a dance line were about the only extracurriculars for girls that involved any physical activity, because there weren't any female HS sports in a lot of places. So there might be kids who get into cheering because grandma/mom/aunts did, just like boys will play a certain sport because their dad did.

Agree...orhow about Spelling Bee championship sporting event they show on TSN?
ESPN will have the Spelling Bee on as well, and I don't have a problem with that. There are precious few times where kids get the chance to star by applying their brains, and ESPN has plenty of throwaway programs that can easily be preempted from time to time. I'd much rather watch a Spelling Bee than the Espy Awards or yet another sports talk show.

Don't care what you say about this...SPELLING is NOT a sporting event and thus should not be covered on a sports channel. You can't make me change my mind. :(

Actually ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, so the spelling bee is the entertainment part of the programming.:)

...and in Canada...TSN stands for The Sports Network...NOT The Spelling Network....just sayin...that's all...put it on The Learning Channel or something more relavent...don't mess up my sports channel with irrelevant fluff. :(

And John Daly proves, beyond any reasonable doubt, that golf is not a sport either.

Re: Federal Judge Says Cheerleading Not a Sport

Quinnipiac has found their solution...

Quinnipiac to add golf, rugby for women

Quinnipiac will keep its women’s volleyball and competitive cheer teams, while also adding women’s golf and rugby teams to provide more athletics opportunities for female student-athletes, according to a plan filed in federal court last week.

Several women’s volleyball players and their coach sued the university in March 2009 when Quinnipiac cut women’s volleyball, men’s golf and men’s outdoor track to help balance its budget. The school added competitive cheer. The women’s volleyball players alleged that the university violated Title IX.

Last month, a federal court decided that competitive cheer as conducted by Quinnipiac was not a sport that could be used to meet Title IX requirements. Judge Stefan Underhill ordered the school to keep volleyball for a year and develop a plan to comply with the federal anti-discrimination law.

While not an NCAA championship sport, rugby is considered an emerging sport by the Association.

“Quinnipiac University plans to increase its investment in women’s athletics in the years ahead,” Lynn Bushnell, the school’s vice president for public affairs, said in a prepared statement.

Mark Thompson, senior vice president for academic and student affairs, monitor all team rosters. The school had been found to engage in deceptive roster practices.

The court must approve Quinnipiac’s plan.
