Re: Federal Judge Says Cheerleading Not a Sport
Not that long ago, cheerleading and some variation of a dance line were about the only extracurriculars for girls that involved any physical activity, because there weren't any female HS sports in a lot of places. So there might be kids who get into cheering because grandma/mom/aunts did, just like boys will play a certain sport because their dad did.I'm sure the motives for getting involved in cheerleading do vary quite a bit, depending on the individual. I'm certainly no expert, but I would hazard to guess that some of these (in no particular order) might include things like:
It's a fun way to get some exercise;
Wanting to show some good old school spirit;
Enjoying performing and 'being noticed' in front of an admiring crowd;
Becoming 'more popular' with your classmates;
And maybe for a few using it as a way to 'connect' with good-looking athletes...
ESPN will have the Spelling Bee on as well, and I don't have a problem with that. There are precious few times where kids get the chance to star by applying their brains, and ESPN has plenty of throwaway programs that can easily be preempted from time to time. I'd much rather watch a Spelling Bee than the Espy Awards or yet another sports talk show.Agree...orhow about Spelling Bee championship sporting event they show on TSN?
