Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU and ??

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

Except Houghton wasn't always EAS, the county pulled that card in an attempt to bring more service.

If air service to Kinross is taken away (30 minutes from the Sault), you still can fly into Sault, Ontario (40 minutes from the Sault).

I'm not sure what the rules are on flight transfers but whenever you enter Canada there can be issues. If any player had any sort of criminal record Canada could deny him entry and put him straight on a flight back home. If a player/coach had a DUI conviction in the past 10 years they are not allowed to enter Canada unless they receive some special waiver. While it apparently isn't to difficult to obtain it can make travel a lot more complicated for teams if they have to file and receive special waivers with Canadian government officials.

except then everyone needs passports...

You know all the Canadian players on your team already have them. And, really, a passport isn't a bad thing to have.

And if worse comes to worse, there is Pellston, 80 minutes away.

Good thing Northern wouldn't have to fly to the Sault, they could only ice three or four guys

Well it's a good thing UND is out of the league then.

Of course, this would make me very happy if indeed LSSU was the secret, heretofore unknown applicant.

And of course LSSU makes enormous sense -- LSSU, NMU, Tech, Bemidji, UAA, and UAF -- the real question mark is whether Mankato and St. Cloud have a geographic fit, not the other way around. Note -- Obligatory defensive remark upcoming: I am not sure what SCSU or Mankato offer in this scenario. A WCHA dominated by the northern hockey schools means that the southern half of Minnesota is just as lost in the wilderness as anyone else. It all depends upon perspective. If your world-view originates from Minneapolis, and your world-view narrow enough, I can see where a person might think LSSU is a distant addition.

Of course, if your world view is from the UP or Alaska, Mankato and SCSU are just as distant, remote, and nationally meaningless as BGSU and Ferris.

Perhaps instead of engaging in xenophobic spasms caused by the mere mention of non-Minnesota-based WCHA programs, the supporters of college hockey in distant, remote, isolated, south-central Minnesota should perhaps be celebrating the survival of their league, with the addition of schools wherein hockey is the Number One program, with their own histories and rivalries.

My hope: LSSU applies to the WCHA with UAF, both are admitted, and the league offices are located in Houghton, the most centralized location and the city and school.

Delta is pulling out of Pellston too. and Alpena. and 19 others. I'd be extremely surprised if there is any service to Sault Canada from anywhere in the US. You'd most likely have to go to Toronto first. Of course you might get service to sault canada from Timmons.

Totally agree!

Its not a xenophobic view when those teams were already in the league. LSSU is the newcomer, not the other way around. They bring absolutely zero value to the league. Their only claim is "hey we are close to some other teams".

If this was a new league starting from scratch, then I would agree with you more. But its not.

Spoken like someone that really believes all of that "State of Hockey" nonsense.

The says a lot considering that each of the UP schools have more NCs than any of the WCHA Minnesota schools (not to mention half of the NCHC[sorta]). LSSU brings plenty the table...certainly more than any other team the WCHA could be looking at for 8th. I'm guessing the Minnesota schools would prefer Moorhead figure their ***** out and would prefer to avoid LSSU to keep voting control in Minnesota.

What the hell are you talking about? First of all it is gopher fans saying your program brings nothing and the only SCSU fan that said anything said he would be happy to your program in the WCHA if meant it saved your program....

Delta has also dropped Pellston, I believe.

You have Tech for that. They provide enough wins for all teams.

Not so much for LSSU. ;)

How, exactly, is he wrong?

Lake State brings tradition. It also boasts a very good arena, with major additions scheduled soon. That in itself shoots down his uninformed comment that LSSU brings "nothing". What he really meant is "We want the WCHA to be Minnesota-based".

Ok to check your assertion I did some research. Sault Canada is served by one airline that I can find. Air Canada. it goes to one city. Toronto.
You can fly on United there via their code share partner Air Canada thru.. Toronto. Delta does not serve Sault Canada. American Does not serve Sault Canada, Continental serves it on their code share partner... Air Canada. So I will say again, to fly there you must go thru Toronto. Unless you have your own airplane or charter one. You can't go to Timmons from Sault Canada unless you go to Toronto, you can't go to Thunder Bay unless you go to Toronto, or Minneapolis, or Boston, etc.
Are we Clear now?
