ESPN Production

Re: ESPN Production

Its NoDak's fault because they were playing "Kitty by the door" whatever that means. Thanks Barry. ESPN's ratings should get a boost for Michigan being in the title game, not like its going to make a huge difference anyway. I might just mute it and play the Benny Hill Theme Song (Plus thats better than hearing that annoying fight song ever stoppage of play). I think the final count was 17 Fight Songs and 9 "Go Blue" diddys. Go Blue was lacking from normal exposure. Im sure they'll make up for it Saturday night.

Why the hell is this game on ESPN? Put this game on some network like versus. Versus is real good for hockey and i am sure it would not suck like ESPN.

Because the NCAA packages all of the other NCAA Championship together. And ESPN really wanted the rights to NCAA baseball, softball, lacrosse, and and other sport where one of the BCS schools just might happen to be there. That means that ESPN has to also cover stuff like the NCAA D2 football championship, college soccer, and wrestling.

Just remember when you complain about melrose. It could always be worse. At least they don't trot out that nag known as Pam Ward for the Frozen Four.

Re: ESPN Production

The "former Ylae goaltender (sic)" Govlite of Minnesota trying "Let's play hockey" off the absurdly long Clay Matvik introduction was "da best".

Re: ESPN Production

Plan to mute ESPN and listen to Bruce Ciskie on 94x for the Championship Game. That way I know I'll hear something about the Dawgs.

Go Dawgs!

Re: ESPN Production

because its good exposure for the sport, more people have ESPN, and ESPN has the rights.

Because if ESPN wants to televise college bouncyball and college football, they HAVE to televise fringe sports like lacrosse, hockey, etc. Part of the contract. If the NCAA was not requiring that provision, I guarantee you ESPN would drop those sports like a hotcake.

Re: ESPN Production

How many times did Barry Melrose refer to UMD as Minnesota or UND... Perhaps he was into the Labatts???

and nobody, including Versus would pick it up. We'd be lucky to get the games on laptop screens.

Re: ESPN Production

The intermission reports are a little bit better than usual, but not nearly as good as what we were getting during the regionals. They're fine talking about college hockey on the U, but the second we get on the Deuce or on ESPN proper, out come the baseball highlights during intermission. Other than that (and Barry Melrose being Barry Melrose), I think the quality is better than it used to be.

Re: ESPN Production

Neal Broten "Only player to win NCAA title, Olympic Medal, and Stanley Cup." - Clay Matvick

Eddie Belfour did the same, but I guess I don't have access to all the resources ESPN does...

- it would have been correct had they included his Hobey Baker award.

They did mention the hobey. They stated he won it in 1981

Re: ESPN Production

The only thing that bothered me with the broadcast was that they kept showing those same 3 or 4 Duluth fans with wigs and that's a pretty small quibble.

Otherwise I was completely content. Got to see the title game in HD, unlike the Sharks/Yotes game or Kings/Ducks games that I'm currently watching on Center Ice.

Even Barry doesn't really bother me. I'm just thrilled that all of the games were available this year and that they're on ESPN instead of some obscure sports tier channel.

I think that some expect too much for our obscure little niche of a niche sport.

Re: ESPN Production

They did pretty darn good.

It was quite funny them trying to pronounce Oleksuk's name. I think they pronounced it five different ways and didn't get it right once. :D

I think they screwed up the announcement, in that I think Broten did that all within a year, but I could be wrong.

Re: ESPN Production

Was very pleased with the production. It was in HD which was great, and I enjoyed the post game and trophy presentation. I was happy they didnt cut out to baseball tonight right after the goal.

You know there was someone at the mothership with an itchy finger on the button too...

Oh I hate it when they do that! Honestly! How hard is it to figure in say 10-15 minutes or so to do a few interviews and whatnot?

Re: ESPN Production

I was glad to see this thread.

My wife, who is not exactly real hockey knowledgeable, spent almost the entire game remarking how bad Melrose and Thorne were and how they almost ruined watching the game for her.

Can't argue. They are both terrible. Barry Melrose is Mr. Hockey Cliche'.
