ESPN adds another dimension

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

I know! I too, long for the days of Australian Rules Football. *cue the dude with the emphatic hand point*

It was on ESPN360 a couple months ago and it was awesome. The hand motion guys don't wear the awesome white suits anymore though. :(

Then we need some throwback games, I loved those guys in the 80's.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

So I did a search for an article that was predicting 3D TV would probably be a flop like the Beta was - couldn't find it.

But while the prospects of Chris Berman busting out of the tube in 3D is definitely scary, certain genres other than sports programming might be a good fit. :p

That would be a good driving force for 3D I guess. I believe one of the reasons why VHS seceeded over Beta back in the day is that most of the porn studio's back then put more of their films on VHS.

That is correct.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Billiards is a favorite sporting event of mine as well. Although I suppose billiards in 3d could be pretty cool, but keep that for the 3am timeslot.

I remember watching 9-ball in the late afternoons with my roommates my freshman year at Ferris. :p I think the same 6-7 guys were always on.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Why do I feel like 3D is a fad?

because it has been every other time... sort of like the video phone... its a cool sounding idea, even if you can get it to work, but the reality of it is that its not easy to pull off and can be awkward. Even now as we've reached the era of the webcam and the video conference its still sparingly used and sort of awkward.

For 3-D you'll need headwear, you'll need the technology sufficient to watch, you'll need to watch the TV straight on, and then you'll have to decide that what you are seeing gives you enough added benefit to overcome those inconveniences. I think headwear alone can make things difficult and there may be some disorientation issues with repeated 3-D use.

If anybody remembers the Virtual (Game) boy, a friend of mine had one, they told you to put the set down every half hour so that you didn't go dizzy and things like that. I've already seen an article recently that mentions that regular 3-D viewing may be hazardous to ones health due to disorientation.

It might be cool a few times, but I'm not sure its going to adopt.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

So now they can show Phil Hellmuth shirtless in 3D!

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

In response to the Lebron episode, I have decided to use SI.com for my score/update use going forward...not saying I will never use ESPN.com but I'm going to do something to give them fewer hits in response to them pimping Lebron in that fiasco

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Definately seems pretty cool, but I'd rather ESPN start working on being less of a populist/gossipy/entertainment whore and spend more effort on, you know, actually covering and reporting on sporting events.

I'd rather they not "report" anything. Just run the effing cameras and get out of the way.

I haven't been on ESPN.com for ages. I use CBSsportsline.com instead.

thats pretty silly. they were approached and they said yes (As every network would have done). lebron's people controlled everything from the get-go; it wasnt their idea. this free agency has been 2 or 3 years in the making and the lebron decision was the pinnacle of it.. the frenzy overtook the front pages of all types of media outlets, dwarfing the gulf spill, the obama wheelings and dealings, and often times, the world cup. it would have been stupid for espn to miss the boat because 'this sounds like a cheesy idea'

i mean it was terrible; and i was fortunate enough to DVR it and so i could fast forward until he announced his decision. I then stopped watching immediately after he said 'south beach'. but hey, what were the ratings?

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Is there an online sports site that just has plain normal God-fearing text and not thousands or videos and popups and stuff. I just want to look at ****ing scores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

exactly. if there is a reason to avoid espn.com its the fact that their website is practically unreadable.

It's perfectly reasonable to make ESPN complicit in every other way, though.

The nonstop LeBron talk on EVERY ****ING CHANNEL they operate on has been really annoying.

I listen to Mike and Mike on the radio on my drive to work. It's been 4 straight months of LeBron talk that reached new levels of absurd last week, when they had Drew Brees on as a guest and the effete doosh tandem of Greenberg and Huselius either asked him questions about LeBron, or worked all of his answers into points about LeBron.

The hype machine at ESPN is the journalistic equivalent of the "LET'S MAKE SOME NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-OISE!" guy on the PA at NBA games. If you don't think ESPN helped come up with The Decision with LeBron, you have to admit that they creamed their jeans when they heard the pitch. It was the only logical way to follow up on the months of hype generated by their network.
