ESPN adds another dimension

Unfortunately, all it means is that now we can get terrible sports coverage in 3D.

Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

Definately seems pretty cool, but I'd rather ESPN start working on being less of a populist/gossipy/entertainment whore and spend more effort on, you know, actually covering and reporting on sporting events.

But they've gotten so good at getting college football coaches fired.

Really? You're going to bleed Mike Leach into here? Hasn't there been enough talk about this? This story was old New Year's Day, and it's now like an in-law who's decided that 2 weeks isn't enough time with you. Better make it a month.

Apparently you don't know what a joke is.

Just wait to see how ticked ESPN will be when TMZsports.com starts up and steals all their stories.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Is the new dimension The 5th Dimension?

Meh. I basically gave up on ESPN for most things when they started broadcasting "sports" like Spelling Bees, and poker.

Billiards is a favorite sporting event of mine as well. Although I suppose billiards in 3d could be pretty cool, but keep that for the 3am timeslot.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

Yeah but it's in 3D! :D

The more important story is that we're this much closer to ESPN 8, The Ocho.

I think technically, this would be the ocho. There's ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN Classic, ESPNU, ESPNDeportes. OK, I'm wrong. We're one away from ESPN8, The OCHO.

If you count the international ESPN's, then we've already gone beyond the ocho. But just in America, we are only at 7.

Re: ESPN adds another dimension

ESPN in 3D? Because Chris Berman in HD wasn't scary enough?
Good point. I would rather seem em investing in covering more stuff, not just beat one **** story to death for a week or two. Hell, I would really like it if they did go with the Ocho that focused exclusively on minor league sports and leagues, and D2 and D3 NCAA sports. Hell, maybe even get some of the weaker sisters of the D1 mid majors in there as well. Everybody gets their fifteen minutes of fame right??

ESPN = Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.

Now, I still think it's become a running-joke of what it used to be, but technically broadcasting the Spelling Bee on ESPN isn't as bad as, say, the Cartoon Network showing live action television or Sci-Fi changing to Sy-Fy so they no longer are bound to show strictly Science Fiction. For all the talk that cable tv is splintering audiences, it's telling that most "niche" channels all seemingly end up gradually turning into a general programming station.

And I still long for the days when Sportscenter gave highlights and a full box score for every Major League game - even that Kansas City-Texas thriller.

Sort of like A&E ... "Arts and Entertainment"? A&E pretty much lost me when they started with the "paranormal" series featuring *********s who walk around in the dark and scare themselves shiatless.
