And I finished with a Kirkland Lite. Yes, the Costco Kirkland. Sold in a 48-pack. It's good for a cheap beer if you want to play beer pong or not waste a good beer once you've had a few. It is what it is.

Had the Southern Tier Creme Brulee tonight. Tasty, but I wonder if it might mellow out with some aging, as the 10% is noticed. Pretty strong vanilla/creme taste, as one should expect I suppose, and pretty sweet as a result. But overall I enjoyed it.

cc: RaceBoarder, I believe you had asked me to let you know what I thought about it. ^

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Got lucky, and found some Clown Shoes Itasca Loonidragon (MN only release), which is a Russian Imperial Stout aged in scotch barrels.

Also, making a couple trades:
Lift Bridge BA Silhouette for some Bent Paddle Double Shot Double Black (black ale aged in oak barrels w/vanilla and coffee added)
An Itasca for a Clown Shoes Amandine Exorcism, a MA only release that is an imperial stout, aged in bourbon barrels, and infused with almond liqueur.

Looking forward to trying the new beers.

Mainly for Gurt, but this Friday, some of us are having Rumfest. Everyone is bringing a little rum, good stuff, and sampling. Will report all the brands/etc and hopefully reviews.

I'm assuming I can find it, some stores have it, and I'll be bringing Pusser 15YO, which I have had before, and it's delicious.

I haven't seen that too often in stores.

I have a bottle that I bought online. Good stuff if you enjoy navy style rums.

Hey, Gurtie... What should I pick up in Jamaica, keeping in mind I most likely won't be venturing out of the port city our cruise ship pulls into?

Hey... that's a tough one.

The only Jamaican rums that I'm familiar with are the Appleton line and the Blackwell line. A quick Google search didn't reveal much more.

Appleton is easily available here, so not really worth the space in your luggage. It's not a favorite line of mine. In fact, the only one I like that I've had is the 12yo which is a very nice and affordable sipper (NOT a mixer). It goes for around $30 here, so it'd be a steal at $20 or less.

Again though, it's easily available here.

Blackwell (that I've had) is a better than rail, but run of the mill mixing line.

Your best bet would be if the duty free has non-Jamaican rums (or other booze) on the cheap.

Thanks!!

There was a store that had it, but I know they overprice their stuff a little, so went to a mega store. They didn't have the 15, but found the El Dorado 15. I've had the ED 12, and that was good, so bought the 15. Of course, had to taste test tonight to see if it would pass muster. It did.

As for the rum world, it's like learning to swim, and I'm still eyeing the pool. Haven't really dipped my toes in yet. :o

If you enjoy Pusser's, it's not surprising that you also like El Dorado. They're cousins of a sort.

Pusser's is made from a blend that includes rum from the same Demerara River area of Guyana where El Dorado is distilled (along with rum from Trinidad). I believe I read once that some of the rum in Pusser's is actually made by El Dorado.

El Dorado makes very nice rum. 5... 8... 12... 15... 21...

All are distinct and superb in their own way. The 8 and the 12 are my favorites, but I like them all.

Not overly sweet either which makes sense that a whiskey/bourbon/scotch guy would like them.

The 15 was thicker than the 12, if my memory of the 12 serves right, but not syrupy. It comes close but doesn't cross that threshold. It is sweeter than bourbon, but like you say, not overly sweet. Has a nice hint of liquor heat, which surprised me, but was appreciated.

Good to know we have a rum expert here, as whenever I go to Smalley's, I plan on trying something new. It's one way to learn.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Far from an expert.

I know what I like (and don't like) though... of what I've tried.

More of a rum enthusiast. :p

When making a new purchase though, I read a lot of reviews before trying something. This educates me even if I can't always recall all of the details that I've learned.

Oftentimes, I enjoy the history and story.

Gotcha, and understand. "Enthusiast" is a good term, I guess. I am no expert on bourbon, either, but I also know what I like.

Given the GOOD rums I've had in the past year, this could be dangerous, given the hot/humid summers of MN. They are really good, and I know I've only tasted the "middle of the road" of good rums.

Edit: for the beer/bourbon people, it'd be like trying Old Rasputin (beer) or Buffalo Trace, then trying Surly Darkness (beer) or Pappy (bourbon)

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

I know that you know this, but there isn't always a direct correlation between cost/age and quality.

I've had consistently mediocre luck when it comes to more expensive rums.

Most of my favorites are in the $35 - $50 range.

There's a ton to explore in that range.

Agreed, as a bourbon lover. After $50? You know what you're doing.

Falmouth or Ocho Rios?

Was just in Falmouth a month ago. I grabbed a couple bottles of Jamaican Rum Creme and a couple bottles of Flor De Cana (7 and 12).
