Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Wine is my go to if I'm eating pasta. Somehow, a nice Chianti pairs well with bolognese.

Muskegon is getting a distillery in April. What should I try first so I know it's any good?

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Gin and aged whiskey.

Gin needs a great recipe. Whiskey needs great technique.

Agreed.

Personally, if those are quality, then the distillery is a good one. Anyone can make a half-decent vodka, for example.

Vodka isn't a very good measure. It's supposed to be tasteless and flavorless. You can either find out if they suck or they don't. A vodka that doesn't suck and a great vodka aren't that far apart.

ETA: I read your original post wrong.

Exactly, hence why anyone can make a half decent vodka. Whiskey and gin, though...you better be on point.

Alright, when they open, I'll check out the whiskey and gin.

Also, come April, Western Avenue in Muskegon will be GREAT for getting drunk. 18th Amendment Spirits, Unruly Brewing, Pigeon Hill Brewery, Mike's Saloon, and Tipsy Toad Tavern. It's about a 15 minute walk from the new 18th Amendment to the Tipsy Toad.

Vikre in Duluth makes excellent gin and honest-to-god top flight whiskey. They also can make a killer mixed drink.

Might be the first total package distillery I've been at.

45th Parallel was pretty solid, IMO.

Their rye was top notch. Their bourbon was pretty good for a three-year age. I wasn't a fan of their gin. Their vodka was good enough to win double gold at the San Francisco wine and spirits competition

The lemoncello (sp?) was good. For a distillery in bumf* nowhere, and for how many different spirits they did, I add some bonus points in there.

Also, Aquavit...

Our great national nightmare is over. Minnesota is getting Sunday sales.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Went to an Indian restaurant last night, and had my first tastes of Indian beer.

They were both lagers.

Taj Mahal was a bit darker and tasted just fine, Kingfisher was a delightful surprise, tasted much better than I expected.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Went to the Minnesota wine and food festival today. Learned a lot about what I like after getting castigated for only drinking cabernets for the first half hour.

The Binterra pinot noir was outstanding. Ended up splitting a case with my roommate of Silicum Toscana Rosso. It was really **** good, but a bit pricey. Special occasion wine I guess.

The food was outstanding. A little "meh" at times but the cheeses and a few of the vendors more than made up for it.

The craft distilleries there were really on point. Look Liquors was the most outstanding I thought. Their gin was killer while their "Loonshine" was amazing for its format.

Went to New Bohemia's Big Bad Beer Fest today. Basically, if it wasn't 10%, GTFO. The flights were way overpriced, but single glasses were sort of reasonable. Worth it if you hadn't had the beers. Not a madhouse, either. No line until 15 minutes before opening (for reference, the Surly total takeover = a block long line 45 minutes before opening). I'd say worth it overall.
