Great news: The Elmira College domes hockey arena will be moving to campus by late 2026 or early 2027.
With the aging Murray Athletic Center in need of costly renovations, the college has decided to repurpose the Gannett-Tripp Learning Center by completely gutting its interior and transforming it into a 4,000–5,000-seat hockey arena.
As online resources have become the primary tool for research, the campus library is no longer utilized as much as it once was. Because of this, the college plans to downsize the library space.
A new, smaller library will be built on land behind the Main Street Dormitory, which is owned by the school.
During construction, a temporary library will be housed in the basement of the Campus Center—a largely underused space that should provide ample room for research materials, a media center, and computer labs. This relocation will not affect the dining hall or the McKenzie area in the Campus Center.
Regarding the hockey arena, the renovation will transform the library interior into a multi-purpose venue, with hockey as its primary focus. In addition to hosting games, the space will be used for concerts, graduation ceremonies, and other local events. The upgrade will also provide an indoor option for large gatherings, such as the Octagon Fair in case of inclement weather, as well as expanded opportunities for larger conventions, benefiting both the college and the City of Elmira.
Discussions about this project have been ongoing for the past five years, and it has now been officially approved by both the Board of Trustees and President Lindsay. In the coming months, expect to see fundraising efforts and outreach to alumni for support. This is an exciting addition to campus and will further enhance student life.
Additionally, with nearly all sports moving to campus, the Murray Athletic Center and its surrounding land are expected to be put up for sale in May or June.
In the long run, these renovations will help propel Elmira College into the future, providing a much-needed competitive edge in recruiting talented students and athletes.
Hopefully, that puts to rest the rumors about Elmira's financial woes. From a Jim Pfiffer FB post ...
What will they even do with that property if they move hockey to campus?Hopefully, that puts to rest the rumors about Elmira's financial woes.
Kind of ironic in that Elmira bought the Domes for "one dollar" from the State, and now is going to spend millions to replace it.
It says in the article they are going to sell it.What will they even do with that property if they move hockey to campus?
Maybe.........Is this an April Fool's joke? What would they need that many seats for?
Because it's more than RIT, and they still hate RIT.Is this an April Fool's joke? What would they need that many seats for?
Thought ya'll could use a bit of levity after a tough season. Is this an April Fool's joke?
