Eine Kleine Classical Musikgespräche

Does classical / choral / sacred music talk have a place in the Cafe, or is this more of a latte-sipping jazz crowd?

Sample post:
Hey our choral group's doing Bach's "O Jesu Christ mein's Lebens Licht" and I think our tonal color is rounding into shape. I'm thinking of asking herr Maestro if we can call our show "Bach Joy"

Me: Lettuce call it "Bach Joy"
Maestro: I like the title, but I won't leek that yet.

Choral music and hymns have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Have you ever tried intermixing hymns of the same meter? (like two verses of Amazing Grace with Forest Green)

Based on some of the posts in the political threads, I'd say that part of this "crowd" takes the term "head-banger rock" a bit too literally....

Based on the posts in the political threads, I think we tend to put things in quotations marks too frequently.

Well, my favorite musical is The Magic Flute. I've seen Ingmar Bergman's film version seven or eight times.

I refuse to call The Magic Flute an opera. It has quite a bit of spoken dialog interspersed with "show tunes." That is a musical.

Porgy and Bess on the other hand is an opera. I like Gershwin quite a bit, be it his Concerto in F, Rhapsody in Blue, or his musicals like Of Thee I Sing: "she's the illegimate daughter of the illegitimate son of the illegitimate nephew of Napoleon."

Any mention of "The Magic Flute" is automatic association, in my mind, to this:

(Victor Borge (R.I.P.) frame)

Awesome. I'm a big fan of the "phonetic punctuation" bit he does.

Ha! One of our favorite games is to see what settings we can use for well-known texts.
Ex. Try out "Gilligan's Island" theme on "Amazing Grace" lyrics.
