ECAC, Sunday March 11

Re: ECAC, Sunday March 11

Absolutely, but smaller rinks not helping Colgate and Harvard. Cornell had 3900+ on Friday.

3 completely different scenarios though. Union has a decent fanbase, and had RPI as the opponent, who has a good traveling fanbase, especially for a meager 30 minute trip down rt 7. If they hadn't sold out both nights, shame on them. Colgate and Harvard both have very small fanbases, and really only come close to anything near sellout if a road team that travels well is there (Cornell in both cases, SLU @ Harvard usually draws well due to SLU's strong alumni presence in Boston, etc).

Colgate wins 4-0. Harvard wins 8-2. The top 4 teams all advance to Atlantic City.

Semifinal matchups will be Union-Colgate and Cornell-Harvard.

Harvard "sold out" their games against Yale and Brown this year, though I was at the Brown game, and with a reported 3,000+ people in a 2,800-seat arena, I struggled to understand why the place was only about 60-75% full. And they were handing out free tickets to everyone at the door. Brown had a good contingent for the game (it's only an hour from campus, and there's a huge alumni base in the Boston area), and I would assume Yale did the following night as well.

Re: ECAC, Sunday March 11

I would say that Yale averaged around 3K in real attendance this season in a 3.5K rink. That said, they did not sell out the Princeton playoff series and had declining attendance as the series wore on. Just looking at the online feeds for Game three at Colgate and Harvard it seems the attendance was very poor. A friend at Bright tonight estimated the crowd at 50/50 Yale to Harvard fans. I really hope this is the last year for AC, I am a big time hockey fan, but with no horse in the race, will not make the drive. I will attend the regional and hope to cheer on one of our ECAC teams in Bpt.

The Yale Harvard regular season game at Bright was about 7/8 full. I was there. Box score attendance shows 3095, obviously inflated.

Don't want to embarrass the conference on a main thread, three sellouts of 10 playoff games is kind of sad. Maybe the final weekend of NCAA basketball had something to do with it. Stats are from USCHO box scores.
BTW UCONN is still alive 3-3 after two.

Yale Harvard Cap- 2850
Game one 1,551
Game two 1,853
Game three 801

QU Col Cap- 2,600
Game one 958
Game two 1,004
Game three 672

RPI Union Cap- 2,225
Game one 2,350
Game two 2,350 call the fire marshal

Dar Cor Cap- 4,267
Game one 3,869
Game two 4,267

Potential seats available 26,634
Seats sold 19,702
Average attendance for quarterfinal round 74% 1970 per game

Those are sad statistics.

I also remember from the days when Brown used to host playoff games (yes, there was a time when the world worked this way!) that reported attendance would drop in the playoffs. Crowds that in the regular season would likely be reported in the 1,500-1,700 range would be recorded as around 1,000-1,200 for playoff games. I would think that since the league runs ticket sales for the playoff games, as opposed to the schools in the regular season, actual ticket stub ripped is the figure they used for attendance, rather than tickets sold (which makes sense: it's called ATTENDance, not salesance).

Or maybe schools aren't embellishing the regular season figures, and for whatever reason playoff attendance is just lackluster. Maybe the higher prices keep people away, or with less notice before the game, there aren't as many avenues to promote the game to the casual fan, who might hear about Harvard-Yale happening two months in advance and decide to go for that one game. It's also spring break for a lot of schools (I don't know if any ECAC teams are included; Brown isn't off for another week or two, but I know most schools were either off this past week or the impending one), so that could explain low student turnouts.

Regardless of the problem, the low playoff attendances are embarrassing. Hockey East sees generally lower numbers in the playoffs as well, but they still draw in the 3,000+ range. No, none of our teams are as marketable (except maybe Cornell) as the likes of BU and UNH, but we should still be seeing bigger crowds than for regular season games. You never hear of professional sports playoff games having smaller crowds in the playoffs (unless the Devils are playing), so why should this be any different?.

Re: ECAC, Sunday March 11

I had mentioned in a score thread that in CT this weekend folks had to choose between high school and college hockey playoffs, ( CT high school playoffs were at Bridgeport arena (NCAA regional site) this weekend and at Ingalls next weekend). As an aside, I just looked on ticketmaster and ther are no tix available for the East Regional at BPT.
