ECAC Friday 1/17

Re: ECAC Friday 1/17

Clearly, it's the refs' fault Robertson got frustrated in a game he was winning and decided to throw a headbutt. Clearly.

Not the point. When it's 5-2 with 2 minutes to go and the refs are calling every little thing and both teams are just trying to get out of the building, tensions get escalated. Boneheaded (pun not really intended, but I'll take it ;) ) move by Robertson, and he's certainly had more than his fair share of those in his career, but he shouldn't have been in that position because the game should have been over. We reached the 2 minute mark right at 9:00. The game didn't end until 9:12.

The refs lost control of the situation and then exacerbated the problem. That is the opposite of a referee's job.

Hold it. They were calling every little thing, but they lost control of the situation? Hey, your words, not mine.

That said, a couple goal reviews, numerous offsides/icings, even more whistles for goalies covering the puck... 9:12 isn't all that lengthy of a game.

Hmm...you raise a good point! :) What I was getting at is that there was no need for the refs to call everything late in the game, and when they did, the players got frustrated. That was entirely fabricated by the refs and it was unnecessary. Even in a nailbiter, that's not really necessary. Let 'em play.

The third period began around 8:30. So that's a 40-minute third period. The game had been moving smoothly, but it slowed down late in the third.

Thing is, we could be having this same exact conversation if they did as you want and let the game play out. Players get chippy in a (not very close) game, tensions rise, somebody gets ejected...

There was no reason for any of the nonsense late in the game, however I would rather the refs call a tight ship in that situation as opposed to somebody getting injured. Just my .02.

Fair enough. Obviously it's 100% Robertson's fault for doing something stupid and reactionary. But I just don't think he'd have done it if the refs had let the game end. Neither team was chippy until the phantom call on Lorito, and then tensions escalated following a scrum in the Brown crease (which lead to more penalties and culminated in Robertson's DQ).
