East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Neutral fan. Saw what looked to be a blatant knee to knee on the hit.

I'm a neutral fan as well and I saw Gothisbere putting his leg out to be hit trying to move the puck. The UVM player came in for a legal check and hit the leg that he stuck out. Nothing illegal there, just bad luck, and if anything Gothisbere was a little slow in protecting himself.

In fairness, Vermont was a doormat too. (Or are we all just forgetting that Vermont decided they were too good for the ECAC even though they've never won a thing?)

Vermont wasn't a doormat during most of the period that Union was there (from 89-Vermont left). They had some good teams in the mid-90's with St. Louis, Perrin, and Thomas.

Why does star man always feel like he has to shout when making a point?

They had good teams for two years before St. Louis et al. graduated, during which time they never won a thing. Then, after those guys graduated, they team had an embarrassing hazing scandal, finished above ninth in the ECAC exactly once, and jumped.

That's twice now with the "never won a thing" thing. You can say that about most teams. Why the vitriol?

Clarkson, Cornell, and Harvard all made sure they didn't win anything. ;)

There seems, to this day, to be a lot of resentment about the Cats leaving the ECAC. I honestly don't care that they left. Their school fit the profile of a HEA school more than an ECAC school anyway (state school, low admission standards, large population, etc.). Personally, I'm rooting for the Cats because I can't stand Union and their administration.

It's not vitriol. Vitriol is "I hope Union doesn't win the tournament because I was once falsely accused of shouting obscenities at a little girl at their rink and I've hated them ever since". (That's a true story.) "Vermont has never won anything" is just a statement of fact.

Well, if it was before the last few years, you were probably one of only about a dozen people in the Achilles High School Rink, so I fail to believe your "excuse".

Does Bennett spit so much that it covers the players sticks? Jezum, the dutchman sure have a hard time holding on to their sticks or is that part of the acting class they take... throw their sticks?

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

i understand calling the slash when a guy's stick breaks but calling it every time a guy drops his stick is ridiculous

The Vermont player visibly kneed him in the back of the knee.

i actually agree that it was a questionable hit. looked like the uvm player knew exactly what he was trying to do there. at the same time, gostisbehere barely missed any time and was flying around the ice shortly after. he played it up.

More acting on Union.

Ha. It was probably 1999 or 2000? My recollection is that you're right that games there were generally not well-attended, but Union was, for a few years, something of a bogey team for Cornell (before Dartmouth became that team) so against them were pretty contentious and that extended to the atmosphere in the crowd. There was even a goalie fight as part of a huge line brawl in the game at Lynah on my 21st birthday, in fact. Ian Burt and... gosh, was it Leeor Shtrom at that point? I can't remember. Anyway, that really happened, regardless of whether or not you believe it.

Edit to add: Holy crap, do I sound like an old fuddy-duddy.
