East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

This thread went haywire....

So who are the players to watch from Union and Vermont?

I apologize. I'm done with the HE/ECAC stuff. To all with teams playing, enjoy the weekend.

For Union, they have a couple of standouts in Carr and Gostisbehere but its mainly a 4 line, 3 sets of D where you don't notice a huge difference. Stevens has been a pleasant surprise in net after an early departure in goal with Grosenick last year. They just seem to come at you in waves. Tenacious forecheck and a little undersized on the blueline with above average speed.

I tried that a page ago. Didn't really work. Players to watch for Union:

Colin Stevens, Goalie - ECAC Goalie of the Year, ECAC 1st Team
Shayne Gostisbehere, Defenseman - Hobey Baker Finalist, ECAC Co-Player of the Year, ECAC 1st Team
Daniel Carr, Forward - Leading Scorer, ECAC 1st Team
Mat Bodie, Defenseman - ECAC 1st Team, Assists Leader
Daniel Ciampini, Forward - ECAC 3rd Team, 2nd Leading Scorer
Mike Vecchione, Forward, ECAC All-Rookie, 3rd Leading Scorer

Max Novak, Michael Pontarelli, Kevin Sullivan has great seasons as well. And I feel bad leaving a few out (Hatch, Lichtenwald, etc).

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Thanks for bringing it back.

UVM - Hoffman in goal. Slow start but coming on.

The top line of McCarthy , Piskarich and whoever they put out with them (Shaw usually?)

Paliotta on D (spelling once again)

The wildcards for me is are Hamilton (D) and Brickley (F). To me their play will be the deciders for UVM

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Pusckarich is our sniper...legit goal scorer but not really an all around player.

McCarthy is our best player.

Brickley is talented, plays tough, but prone to penalties and has never turned into the point scorer they'd hoped for.

UVM tends to play to the competition...up for big games and down for less big games. We have an unfortunate knack for getting the better of shots on goal, territorial play and the like but still losing to top tier opponents. That is generally because our power play is awful....we get dramatically outscored on special teams but tend to have the better of 5X5 play.

It is rare that we get blown out. Odds are the game will be close, no matter which way it goes.

As has been beat to death, we tend to play a very strong schedule (that goes for out of conference as well as within HE). Over the last few years the kids on this team have played North Dakota, Minnesota, Ferris, Lake St along with regularly playing top ECAC teams. They certainly aren't going to be intimidated (not that Union will be either). I would be extremely surprised if either team won this game by more than two goals, and if it is a two goal win I'd expect an empty netter.

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Gillies is the player to watch for PC but he has been mostly down since December except for the four games vs Maine and two against UMass.

Jankowski is a first rounder of the Flames who shows flashes of brilliance but can be taken off the puck fairly easily with a check.

Mauermann was hot to start the season and lately has disappeared

If Mauermann can regain what he was, then PC might have a chance to upset QU. Otherwise, I'd like to Saracino, Army, Shamansky and the fourth line get involved (they were the only show in town on Friday)...

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Two years ago, Lowell had a pretty good time in Bridgeport (controversial goal notwithstanding). I've noticed (between all the flames) a local rep checking in. I seem to recall we had a rep from the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce join the boards then and they were very helpful. One of the bars got permission from the city to close a side street on Saturday to accomodate a larger crowd and even jury-rigged a small tap system out there. Was pretty awesome.

The only issue we had was one scary parking garage with no lighting in the prime stairwell but I'm sure they've fixed that by now. Enjoy your trip down there.

Thanks for info...I heard Bridgeport has a shady side but should be fun

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Sorry for the late reply. In meetings all afternoon. Heres some info on Bridgeport. Im pretty sure that folks who have come to Bridgeport regionals in the past have been pleasantly surprised. Heres some general info: http://infobridgeport.com/

@jcarter "the chip" is nothing a few beers couldn't take care of on Friday. I would suggest Tiago's.

@fireknight. Pretty cool having the W frozen four last week at the Q and this week's East Regional, probably the strongest field we have had the past four times we hosted.

@Zlax45 it will cost you $20 to park at the Arena. See the parking map at www.websterbankarena.com.

@presedejohnson. The arena is the perfect size for ahockey Regional. We sold approx 3000 tickets before the teams were announced and all the teams have requested the maximum amount of team allotment tickets, 400. All were asking for more, if available. Consult the links above for more info.

@wholin1 unfortunately the re entry policy hasn't changes. I suggest a late lunch at Ralph & Riches and a late dinner after the 2nd game on Friday.

No I don't expect so since most of these guys remember beating the mighty U last year when they UVM was terrible. Considering this team is far and away better I expect they are happy with the draw.

Can you get rid of JohnK, or at least help him take that bigass chip off his shoulder? Thanks in Advance.

Your friend

jcarter
We will never get rid of John, he owns a nice pub in Schenectady, and might even give you a beer if you are nice to him. :)

Re: East Regional- Union vs Vermont & Quinnipiac vs Providence

Does he serve Vermont microbrews?

Magic Hat 9 at the current time. Won't do like I did for the USA/Canada game and charge $50 for a pint of Labatts. For anyone not going to Bridgeport, we will be running specials for the game, starting at noon. Will not be able to go to Bridgeport until Saturday due to work meeting on Friday but I will be at pub by faceoff.
