East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Just back from 2 games.

Nice review DI, but I beg to differ about the speed of play. I commented in the score thread that the first game looked like "Cornell vs Cornell" Yale vs AFA was a much faster and cleanly played game. Ice and glass conditions aside, I thought the second game was much better. The refs also ruined the first game.

Congrats UMD.

The result was not a surprise in the least.

Expected, even. Too bad we could not follow suit.

If you want to know why AF gave Yale so much trouble, here is a post-game quote from the AF coach...“We had a plan,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. “Our plan was to rope-a-dope our way through the first two periods and we felt they just can’t go like that — nobody could play like that for three periods without tiring. We figured they would lose their energy. All of a sudden, the worm turned and we were the ones with legs.”

Well planned and well executed!

I didn't get to see the tUMD-Union game, so I cannot comment. The Ylae-Air Force game...wow. I thought it was very even, both teams trading long shifts of dominance. Ylae moreso towards the end of the game, resulting in a fortuitous goal. If Ylae can shut down tUMD's top line, it's anyone's game. Otherwise I see tUMD winning a close one, closer than the score would indicate: 4-2, ENG.

In order for that to happen, two things have to happen first.

1. Not giving Ylae 9 powerplays. They got away with it today because of reason number 2:

2. Kenny Reiter? YES HE CAN! Where the hell was this most of the year? He played a very solid game today. We'll need a duplicate effort against Ylae tomorrow.

After the royal screw job UNO took, I can imagine how you're feeling.

Thanks for being supportive. Tough night and it's ironic that even UM fan is having a hard time defending the outcome in the West Regional thread. If UNO was Michigan and Michigan was UNO.................Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,

There are a few blowhoards defending. It's hilarious.

Oh, and for the record, FU UNO. No NMU, Blais rumors, I blame you. ;)

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Excellent summary by Dartmouth Indian. I would add that I thought the stage was just a little too big for Union the first time around. The body language got progressively worse with each failed PP. I think a more experienced NCAA team would not have started hanging their heads with so much time left. But they have so many good freshmen and sophs so they will learn from this and come back stronger

Go Bulldogs (of the Duluth variety, of course)!!! :)

Sorry, Minnesotans are not allowed to quote New York movies!. It would be be like like me quoting "Fargo." Can you name the movie your quote is from?

You can quote Fargo all you want.

Gameday folks!

It is going to be a great game tonight!

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

I thought Union represented themselves well as a first time NCAA participant and though a tough loss, I wouldn't by any means call it a heartbreaker. IMO we lost to a better team and there's no shame in that. I think this will be a real learning experience for the Dutchmen who are still quite young at many positions. After being as low as low can be as a program seemingly forever, I'm not going to cry about a loss in the national tournament. Thanks to our coaches and our departing seniors for getting us to this point and credit to tUMD and good luck going forward, though my allegiance lies with our fellow conference member tonight.

As far as the venue, I can't say I was particularly impressed. The only positive to the arena in my view was the sightlines which I guess is no small matter. I felt like I was maneuvering in a maze trying to get around. I walked through the Media Center before the game to get through to the other side. The restrooms were generally inadequate and the PA announcer seemed to take pleasure in screaming at the crowd. And as far as the video/scoreboards they get a resounding FAIL. First, no overhead scoreboard, what' s with that? You could not see the video boards and the penalty clocks which were in heavy use, were microscopic. The NCAA in awarding venues should have higher minimum standards for fans. I guess the ice surface was also an issue though I couldn't honestly say as I particularly noticed.

Re: East Regional - 3/25 and 3/26 - UMD, Yale, Union and Air Force

Watching hockey at Bridgeport was like witnessing a crime against hockey. I thought Union struggled because of nerves and UMD wasn't very impressive. Then I saw the normally deft Yale skaters falling and unable to do anything with the puck on the crap ice, and had to question my impressions of the early game. The puck was sticking to the ice all day and it totally took Yale, and I assume every one else, off their game. I know all the teams had to deal with it, but I think it ruined what should've been a great day of hockey. It's a shame that Union and Air Force had to end their seasons without being able to play their best.

I hope they fixed the ice for tonight.
