Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Just wanted to get some preliminary thoughts on who the favorites will be entering the 2010-11 season?

The last few years of college hockey have had some surprises with defending champs not making the NCAA's, the Bemidji St., RIT and Huntsville stories and the annual surplus of pro defections (23 already this spring before the NCAA Championship game.) I realize the "paper" favorites can change with the uncertainty of NHL signings.

My take on a preseason 2010-11 NCAA Ranking
1. Boston College
2. Miami
3. North Dakota
4. Michigan

5. St. Cloud
6. Maine (Nyquist/Red Wings say he is returning)
7. Yale
8. Minnesota-Duluth
9. UNH
10. Michigan St.
11. Wisconsin (with Stepan, assume B Smith and McDonagh sign)
12. Rensselaer
13. Denver
14. Colgate
15. Notre Dame
16. RIT

On the bubble: Minnesota, BU, Alaska, Cornell (with R Nash), Ohio State

All I know is, SLU is tied for first!!

With regard to the ECAC, I'm not sure I'd put Colgate that high, and I think you should take a second look at Union.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

I would put MSU closer to the 11-15 range. We are losing core leadership and our All-American defenseman. I think we can be top 15 good, but nothing surprises me good or bad with this program anymore.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Vermont will be very young up front (something like 3 or 4 upperclassman forwards) but returns 6 dmen and the starting goalie and has a strong incoming class. They should at least be on the bubble if not in the 10 to 15 spot.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

i think bu will be better than a lot of people may think next year they have a couple of solid recruits coming in and i expect to see kieran millan revert to his freshman year form.

..... i hope i'm wrong tho!!!!! LET'S GO EAGLES!!!!!

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Yeah, Maine returns a lot. Goaltending isn't settled, though. And a 28% power play is not something you'll get every year. I think 6th is high. I'd be happy with 10-12.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

UNH is ranked too high. Questions in net and on offense - there are a lot of players who are going to need to step it up; defense might be the strongest aspect of next year's team. I don't know anything concrete about incoming recruits, but this is the overall impression that I get.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

If everyone's back, which seems reasonable but not certain (excluding Genoway, who is a wildcard), many Sioux fans look at the upcoming season the same way Denver and Wisconsin fans did a year ago. It'll be a little more experienced team than usual, with impact seniors and juniors. They should legitimately contend for important titles. Of course you can see how it worked out for Denver and Wisconsin - it may just be a prelude to another early exit or late ax-kicking by BC.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

I think you have way too many ECAC teams in there.

I dont think Notre Dame will be that high, or Ohio State.

If NMU didnt lose Olver, and Gustafsson they would be a top 10 team next season.

I do think NMU will be a top 20 team next season though.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Next year CC should be better than they were this past season. Injuries finally got to them at the end of the season - after they lost one of their top forwards (Stephen Schultz) they went 1-5 in WCHA games after starting 11-8-3 with him in the lineup. Up until that point they were a top 10 team - without him they fell off pretty quickly. They have one of the top recruiting classes in school history coming in with a couple of guys who will be expected to make an impact right when they step on the ice. They do lose a few key players, but they have far more positives than negatives going into next season. I wouldn't put them in the top ten, but they should at least be on the bubble.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

So, in summary everyone thinks their team is ranked too low.

The only things for certain is that Tech will finish last, UConn and AIC will not win the AHA and Alabama will not be getting an autobid.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Vermont is going to stay right where they were. They should not finish in the top 15. That being said, neither will we.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Obviously none if this means a **** thing as I believe BC was preseason #1 following the 2008 title, but with what they should have coming back, I'd say they'll be unanimous preseason #1 again.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Insanely early thoughts on Notre Dame's 2010/2011 season leaves me with as much worry as hope, more questions than answers. Goaltending issues are severe. Summershays may be here and adding to the confusion, Johnson faded severely down the stretch, and Philips is now just a huge ?. Outside of Ridderwal and Ruth, the seniors to be really failed to provide a lot for the team in terms of on-ice production and leadership. We need guys to find ways to stay healthy and we need production from incoming freshmen like we had in 06/07 and 07/08. There were off ice issues with this team that had an extreme impact this season as well. Solve those chemistry issues, stay healthy, and get better than average goaltending and Notre Dame will leave their old barn behind in fine fashion. Let them fester all year again and all we'll be leaving behind is another burning heap of a building and a season.

Re: Early Thoughts on the 2010-11 Season

Gotta buck the trend here. Maine is too low ....they shud be ranked at 0. Most likely, like UML predictions last year, they will go undefeated scoring a minimum of 5 goals per game and limit opposition to .5 goals per game. All this while playing without a goalie.
