Sorry, not a fan of the coaches front and center. When I took team photos, I put coaches on the outside, in the back, and captains front and center when possible. College athletics is about the student-athletes, not the coaches, in my opinion.

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The game that has been four years in the making.

Friday’s Storyline: Norwich and Oswego State are each making their fourth straight NCAA Division III Frozen Four appearance, yet they have never met in those four years until Friday. Norwich (24-3-1) punched its ticket to its 11th overall Frozen Four by beating Babson 4-0 for the first time in four tries this season. The Cadets avenged a 2-1 defeat to the Beavers in the ECAC East championship game one week prior. Oswego (24-4-0) qualified for its seventh Frozen Four by edging MCHA champion Adrian 3-2 in overtime on the road in Michigan. The Lakers qualified for the NCAA’s by winning the SUNYAC title with a 4-0 shutout win over archrival Plattsburgh. Like Norwich, Oswego enacted revenge on the Cardinals after dropping both regular season contests to PSU. Both teams are extremely senior-laden. Oswego has 14 seniors on 24-man roster, including its nine top scorers. Norwich has five seniors with four of them in the top five in scoring.

All-Time Series: Norwich and Oswego State have met five times with the first meeting coming in 1978 and resulting in a 5-3 win for the Cadets. NU holds a slim 3-2 lead in the series, highlighted by beating the Lakers 2-1 in the 2003 National Championship game at Kreitzberg Arena. Oswego won the last meeting in the 2007 NCAA Quarterfinals with a 3-0 shutout win over the Cadets at the Campus Center Ice Arena on their way to winning the 2007 National Championship.

About the Coaches: Norwich is led by Mike McShane, who is in his 18th season at the helm of the Cadets’ program. Over his illustrious tenure, McShane has turned NU into a traditional national powerhouse. He has compiled a remarkable 389-102-27 record for a .777 winning percentage. Last season, McShane became just the ninth coach in NCAA college hockey history to record 600 career wins. In 32 total seasons coaching, McShane is 633-320-58. He has won four Ed Jeremiah Awards (National Coach of the Year) and eight ECAC East Coach of the Year awards. Under McShane, the Cadets have never posted a losing season and they have won 20 or more games 13 times.

Oswego is led by Ed Gosek, who is in his 10th year at the helm of his alma mater. The 1983 Oswego State graduate recorded his 200th career coaching victory earlier this season on Jan. 12 in a 4-1 win over his former mentor George Roll and his first-year program Nazareth. He has won two SUNYAC Coach of the Year awards and one Ed Jeremiah National Coach of the Year award in 2007 after leading the Lakers to the program’s first national championship. Gosek has compiled a 211-55-16 in his decade-long tenure, which matches McShane’s .777 winning percentage.

Scouting the Cadets: Norwich is led by its “gold” line of Travis Janke, Colin Mulvey and Tory Allan who have played together in nearly every game this season. Janke leads the squad with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points. He became the 47th player in NU men’s hockey history to record 100 career points on Jan. 11 in a 6-1 win over UMass-Boston. Mulvey was named the ECAC East Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Sid Watson Award after leading the Cadets with 19 goals to go along with 18 assists for 37 points. He has also netted nine game-winning goals, which leads all of Division III. Allan has registered 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points, while also tallying a team-leading five power play goals. Fellow senior forwards Kyle Thomas (12-15-27) and Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (12-12-24) round out the top-five offensive leaders for the Cadets. Junior forward Shane Gorman (8-14-22) has also caught fire as of late, scoring a goal in four of the last five games.

Scouting the Lakers: On paper, Oswego State’s top line of Paul Rodrigues, Jon Whitelaw and Luke Moodie matches Norwich’s top trio and maybe even then some. Rodrigues garnered SUNYAC Player of the Year honors after leading the Lakers with 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points. Moodie is one of the nation’s most prolific goal scorers with a team-high 22 goals. The big power forward also tops the Lakers in power-play tallies (nine) and game-winning goals (five). Whitelaw, the 2012 SUNYAC Player of the Year and Second Team All-American from a year ago missed six games due to injury. He has still registered 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points. The trio has combined for a staggering 403 points in their illustrious careers. The Lakers’ offensive arsenal doesn’t stop there though as they have four more players with 10 or more goals and nine more players with 15 or more points. Chris Ayotte (13-10-23) and Chris Muise (10-23-33) each rank tied for second on the Lakers’ deadly fifth-ranked power play unit. Chris Brown (7-24-31) is also over the 30-point mark and ranks second on the team in helpers.

Goaltending: The projected matchup in goal pits Norwich junior Chris Czarnota against Oswego State senior Andrew Hare. Czarnota picked up his third shutout of the season in the quarterfinal win over Babson after making 16 saves. He is 13-1-1 on the year with a 1.46 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. Czarnota earned ECAC East Honorable Mention team recognition has only lost twice in his Norwich career in 26 starts. Hare has been the Lakers’ unquestioned No. 1 goalie for the past two seasons and has amassed an impressive 45-15-2 career mark. This season, Hare is 20-4-0 with a 1.73 goals against average and a .936 save percentage to go along with six shutouts. He was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team.

Very well done - you obviously worked hard to earn your DIPLOMA which has enabled you to advance, eat solid foods and keep a dry roof over your head... (We can assess your wardrobe in a Placid watering hole)

Seriously - you have captured the essence as to why this game is so fascinating...worthy of a Championship....to go along with that championship education you received in Oz...

I still can't believe Farkas will miss this game...

It's bound to come up again. The world needs to know if you're tied to the alma mater or the employer.

Interesting dilemma. My guess is given the same exact situation for most young folks--DD is using dough earned from his employer to pay off debt incurred when he attended his alma mater. Somewhere here there may be a Catch 22 when it comes to loyalty that I do not envy with this younger generation. Good luck Cadets--and I just went there. Good luck DD.

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Oswego State senior men's ice hockey captain Jon Whitelaw has been selected as one of five SUNY Oswego students to receive the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Whitelaw will receive the award, which is the highest student recognition handed out through the SUNY system, in ceremonies April 4 at Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

Whitelaw, a 2012 Second Team East All-American, has received several top awards for combining superior academics and athletics, including the SUNY Athletic Conference's Dr. Sam Molnar Award, the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award and SUNYAC All-Academic team membership. The 2010 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year presented on the importance of player-referee understanding at the USA Hockey Referee Convention, participated with five teammates in a wheelchair basketball tournament for Move Along Inc., spent summers at home in Huntsville, Ontario, teaching hockey fundamentals to children and served as a mock trial guest judge at Nottingham High School in Syracuse, where he student teaches.
Whitelaw ideally “would like to be fortunate enough to pursue possible opportunities with hockey that would allow me to travel and see other parts of the world,” he said. “Ultimately, regardless of where I end up after Oswego, it is my goal to continue my education and pursue a career in teaching.”

Whitelaw, who is fifth on the team in scoring this season with 30 points on 10 goals and 20 assists in 22 games, leads the Lakers this weekend when they face Norwich on Friday un the Frozen Four at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid at 4 p.m.

Whitelaw is the first Oswego State student-athlete to receive the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence since 2011 when women's swimming and diving student-athlete Nikki Dean.
