While Kegsbreath is a mouthbreather frat douche, "warfighter" is a derpism that predates him by 15 years. It was the creation of Raytheon, Lockheed and other weapons contractors to bridge from "supporting the troops" to munitions for bombing schools and weddings. I remember when it was being workshopped.

They are completely in the media and social fortress they've walled themselves into, even cutting off family and friends who question one iota of the ideology they've swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

Well, it depends on how you want to count the money moving around.

If we help fund their defense, they can then move that money they aren't spending on defense to other social issues. So, in that sense, maybe yes. But, directly, no.

But Israel is so locked into that arrangement with their citizenry, even if we did not give them any money, they would be forced to find a way to continue to fund these social programs.

I must admit, it's higher than I thought. But nowhere near 1/3. (And if your read the article carefully, it's actually 14% of the population. 17% is the percentage of Israeli Jews who are Hasidim. 14% is the total population, which is what the original poster was referring to.)

Plus, they all don't not work. After all, how do you think the NYC diamond industry works with Israel? And there are some Hasidim families who are very, very rich, both in America and Israel. It's like any other community -- you have your rich and your poor.

But the whole not serving in the military (with one exception) and the not paying taxes is true.

BTW, does anyone know why this is? It's because the Hasidim don't believe Israel can exist until the Messiah shows up and the Temple is rebuilt. They even fought politically against it's creation back in the aftermath of WWII. Therefore, they don't recognize the State of Israel. Ergo, they refuse to serve and pay taxes.

[Here's another interesting fact about Israel which I learned when I spent a summer there. It is socially expected that you give to beggars. Therefore, Israel has probably the richest beggars in the world... :D]

I have personal experience from this, losing friends from the industry I had for 20 years. The brain rot is stunning. They become demonstrably dumber, turning off the switches of their critical reasoning functions. Some of them were very smart people in their specialty, but they deliberately turned off their empathy and their reason because it conflicted with their fears and their killing jar programming.

Brainwashing is real.

My view of Haredi is colored by growing up next to Brooklyn, where the community is dominated by rapists, welfare cheats, real estate frauds, child molesters, domestic abusers, bag men, antivax lunatics, loan sharks, tax cheats, and con men. You know -- religious freedom! By all rights Dump should have been ultra Orthodox. He's perfect for it. Being antisemitic wouldn't even hold him back. The Haredi hate all the non-Haredi Jews.

I lost a friend I'd had since college. She wasn't political at all; found conversations about political issues boring. Then out of nowhere she became enamored with MAGA and Q and changed completely. It wasn't gradual; it happened fast. It was legitimately scary.

You grew up in Huntington. Hardly next to Brooklyn! You can't fool me. :-)

That occurs in all insular communities, unfortunately, where it's so hard for the authorities and social services to penetrate. The price fixing scheme concocted by the Passover food makers took years and years to crack, because it was impossible to get any undercover agents into that community.

Heck, the Haredi hate each other (and they wouldn't even consider any Jew on this Board a Jew)! There are so many different sects, all of which think their way is the only way. Typical religious zealots. Heck, way back there was a "turf war" going on in NYC between two Haredi sects, and they would assault men from the other by shaving off their beards and bangs; the ultimate assault you can commit in that community. It was wild. (And guess how many of them frequent strip clubs. Constant customers.)
