Dump Term 2 Part 5: He Didn't Specify Which Civilization Would Die...

I almost feel sorry for Caroline getting hung out to dry.
  • She prepares remarks parroting the line about the opening of the Strait.
  • Before she goes out there, Iran closes the Strait in response to Bibi blasting Lebanon.
  • They send her out there anyway.

Her attempt to save face later. I love how they are flat out lying about the "new" 10-point plan. It's wonderful to see these weasels backed into a corner.

"I do so have a different Iranian offer. It lives in Canada!"

Here is the real proposal Dump TACO'ed to:

tldr: Dump surrenders unconditionally.

So, the DoD just told the Vatican that the US Military can go wherever it wants and does whatever it wants whenever it wants. and also told Catholic Church that they "need to pick a side."

And then they dropped some 14th century knowlege by referencing the Avignon Papacy. Now I assume only a few people here know this one, but for the rest of us (like I just learned), there was a beef between Phillip IV of France and Pope Boniface VIII, where the pope was kidnapped tortured and murdered. For the next 70 years, Pope's resided in Avignon, France instead of Vatican City.

So... the US Governemnt threatened the Pope. We got that going for us, which is nice..

Wait til they find out there were three Popes for a bit.

The Catholic Church split in September 1378, when, following Gregory XI's death and Urban VI's subsequent election, a group of French cardinals declared his election invalid due to intimidation and violence and, in the presence of three Italian cardinals, elected Clement VII, who claimed to be the true pope. As Roman claimant, Urban VI was succeeded by Boniface IX, Innocent VII and Gregory XII. Clement VII was succeeded as Avignon claimant by Benedict XIII.

Following several attempts at reconciliation, the Council of Pisa (1409) declared that both Gregory XII and Benedict XIII were heretical and schismatic, and elected another pope, Alexander V.

The Whore of Babylon had one last chance to redeem herself after all this bloodstained idiocy at the Council of Constance, where they cleaned up the mess and were well on their way to Conciliarism, which would have democratized the clergy, stemmed the authoritarianism of the Vatican, reined in the more lurid corruption, and maybe even started them down the road to a more allegorical, less literal invisible man mythos. But they fucked it up, power reasserted itself, by the 1500s that was all dead, the Pope was dictator, and we all know how that turned out.

Too bad. The Catholics were done in by their tyranny inherited from the Roman Empire while the Protestants were far more democratic and grassroots from their legacy of the Pagan Germans. But the Catholics were fun and garish and exuberant and gay AF while the Protestants were dour and small-minded little prigs who have turned Christianity into a fucking 500-year long Chamber of Commerce meeting.

A pox on both, but if only we could have saved the best of each, rather than, in the event, gotten the worst.

And from the Department of FAFO:

Letters from Leo can now independently confirm that the meeting took place — and that the Vatican was so alarmed by the Pentagon’s tactics that Pope Leo XIV shelved plans to visit the United States later this year.

I could well imagine another split in Catholicism, with the American rightwing nutbars and the African homophobes and clit-clippers splitting off to form a Southern Baptist-ish fasc church.

Me to my younger, more militant atheist self: “So, the government and the Catholic Church are fighting…”

My younger self: “So we’re definitely on the government’s side?”

“Look, you’re gonna want to sit down for this…”
as someone who was forced to attend catholic school most of my life....yeah.
